About Pam and David Hartzog
Pam and David Hartzog live in Decatur, AL. We purchased this home 15 years ago and have enjoyed remodeling and updating it through the years. We have used the property privately during this time to enjoy our 2 children/spouses and 2 grandchildren along with many close friends. We will still enjoy 'Mermaid Cove' but want to share our place with you and your friends. We have worked diligently to make the accommodations warm and friendly for your stay. The outside areas are planned well to make the most of the views and experience the lake safely. Inside the home you will find modern conveniences with a lake/fishing cabin feel. We will strive to make your stay one that you will want to return to soon.
Pam and David Hartzog purchased this House in 2003
Why Pam and David Hartzog chose Crane Hill
Smith Lake is the cleanest, clearest lake in the state. The mainwater shed is out of the Bankhead National Forest. This lake has a lot of wooded property with no development so it stays clean and clear year round. It is controlled by Alabama Power and they generate hydroelectric power from the lake at the dam. The dam is the second largest earth dam in the country. It is worth a trip to see from the back side at 300 ft high. The lake has all types of fishing and very deep water in the southern parts of the lake where Mermaid Cove is located. Stripe fishing is a must on Smith Lake. We catch 9-15 lb stripe all the time. My son just caught his first 20 lb this year. Below the dam in the Warrior River you can now fish for rainbow trout. This is a year round sport now that they have regulated the flow to support the trout. There is no other place in Alabama you can fish for so many species within a 30 minute drive. It is also one of the best water sports lakes in Alabama for wake boarding, skiing, boating, paddle boards, and swimming. The water clarity is incredible and a must see. The sun rise and sunsets are one of the most romantic times of the day. The lake really glows when the sun hits it early and late. With 500 miles of shoreline you can spend all day out on the boat and not see half the lake. Being a deep lake there are very few snags so boating is very safe, even running at night. Mermaid Cove is located in the back of a large creek which limits boat traffic. One of the draws for us was it has deep water year round and low boat traffic. Smith Lake levels can vary 20 feet throughout the year so all boat houses float. Houses with boat docks on the main creeks have limited use of their boat docks during peak seasons due to boat traffic rocking the docks so much. This is not a problem with our location. Our dock is designed to withstand any waves with little rocking, if ever, and is easy to access at low or high water levels.
What makes this House unique
Mermaid Cove main feature is the house back upper deck over looking the water. I can sit here and just relax. There are three ceiling fans to keep you cool in the summer and a gas fire pit to keep you warm in the cooler evenings. I can't find a better place to just relax! You will not want to leave. The outdoor patio overlooks the lake and has a fire pit for wood fires. This is a great late evening place to unwind with family and friends. The boat dock has 2 jet ski dry docks and 1 boat slip and are all covered. There is plenty of room on our boat dock to just spend the day sitting on the dock and enjoying the water. We have very low boat traffic in our cove so not much rocking as with many places in the main creeks of the lake. Mermaid Cove has several places outside where you can find private time away from a larger group. The decks and patio is a great place to bird watch. There are many different varieties of birds from bluebirds, chickadees, woodpeckers, ducks and Canadian geese. We have a flock of Canadian geese that have taken our cove as their home. We see and hear them year round. Last year they had chicks and frequently paddled around our cove looking for food. Once in a while you may see an American Eagle, but it maybe a Turkey Buzzard so make sure! We have 3 kayaks, 1 Stand-up Paddle Board, and a 2 man paddle boat that are available for our guest to use. They are a great way to see the wildlife up close and get a little exercise. We just added a Splash Island 18' x 6' which the little ones will love and great for adults to just chill in the water.

GREAT HOME, GREAT LOCATION, WITH LOTS OF WATER TOYS
Wonderful location to the lake in a cove, with a nice dock and plenty of water toys. The home had a well stocked kitchen, and a nice back porch to relax and have meals outside. We loved this home, and plan to return soon!
The most perfect family vacation
We could not have been happier with our stay at mermaid cove! Booking was easy and arrival instructions were clear and easy. The cabin is equipped with absolutely everything you need for a stay there! Dave and Pam have thought of everything. The amenities outdoors were phenomenal. We made amazing use of the paddlebards, kayaks, splash pad and paddle boat. The kids had the most amazing time. Fires in the fire pit at night ended our days perfectly. It's hard to make 3 kids happy but this lake house did not disappoint!!!! We will be back next year and the year after that....thank you Dave and Pam for sharing your house with us!!

Mermaid Cove is located in Cullman County on Lewis Smith Lake. Our home is located in the south part of the lake near the dam with deep water year round. Lewis Smith Lake has clear and clean water with no runoff from industry. The water shed is from the Bankhead National Forest. The main attraction is the lake which has 500 miles of shoreline. There is fly fishing below the dam for rainbow trout year round. It takes about 30 minutes to drive from the house to the dam. There are several festivals throughout the year in Cullman. Several marinas are located within a 10-15 minute boat drive that have fuel stations. Boat launch sites are available within a 5-10 minute drive of the property. Nearby convenience store sells fish bait and tackle. Contact us for information on any thing of interest to you.
