You could spend days just exploring this wonderful property, picnicing in the meadows full of wildflowers such as Queen Anne's Lace and daisies, and enjoying the deer and other wildlife. The main house and guest cabin are in the center of the property - 0.4 miles up a private drive. Very quiet, not a single man-made sound can be heard.

After a day of exploring, you'll love soaking in the hot tub as you marvel at the beautiful sunsets beyond the distant mountains. New 20 x 26 stone patio with fire pit and tremendous views. Complimentary firewood is provided.

The main level boasts a spacious living room with a 20-foot high cathedral ceiling, a wall of windows with picturesque views of the surrounding countryside and nearby and distant mountains, satellite HDTV with DVD Player, and a wood stove.

The dining area is adjacent to the living room with the same great mountaintop views, and the fully-equipped kitchen opens to the dining area. Granite counter tops and new stainless appliances. The views from the kitchen are also incredible. Off of the kitchen are a laundry room and a spacious mudroom.

Also on the main level is a spacious master suite with a king bed, doors leading to the deck and hot tub, satellite TV, and a newly tiled private bathroom with shower.

The main level wraparound deck is accessible from both the master bedroom and the dining/living area. On the deck are a gas grill, plenty of deck chairs and hammock for relaxing and admiring the gorgeous meadow, valley and mountain views. The sunsets are particularly wonderful. An octagonal dining table with seating is also located under a covered portion of the deck.

The upper level contains 2 bedrooms, each with a queen bed, and private, newly tiled full bathroom with a tub/shower combo.

Downstairs is a living area with flat screen satellite TV and DVD Player, a high end foosball table (with telescoping, safety rods, very safe for little kids), a full-sized sleeper sofa, a wall of book shelves with plenty of books to enjoy, a desk, and a bathroom with a shower.

At the end of the driveway is a newly cleared grass ball field - 60' x 130'. Great for frisbee, soccer or softball.

In addition to the beautiful accommodations and spectacular mountain views that come with the 106 acres at The Great Escape, you can also have the pleasure of renting and staying at the cozy Guest Cabin nestled in the woods situated next to a peaceful goldfish pond. The cabin is rented for an additional $60 - $85 per night, depending on the season, and never rented separately from the main house.

Sit on the covered front porch of the cabin in either of 2 rocking chairs or the porch swing and listen to the water trickling through the goldfish pond and the birds chirping or the rustling of leaves as the mountain breezes meander through the forest. In the evening, enjoy a bonfire in the firepit by the pond, and during the day you can enjoy a meal in the great outdoors by the firepit.

Inside this cozy cabin are a kitchen equipped with all standard appliances except a dishwasher, a dining table for 2, a living room with a TV and DVD Player, a bathroom with a shower, and upstairs is a bedroom with queen-sized bed.

The Great Escape is located off of Hwy 421 just 20 miles northwest of Boone, so it is just a short drive to many local attractions. On the property are some great old logging roads to hike on as well as beautiful open mountaintop meadows full of wildflowers to roam through. The country roads are scenic and offer a great ride for bikers. Elk Knob State Park and Screamtime Zipline are only 15 minutes away. Dutch Creek Trails horseback riding, the historic Mast General Store, and the Historic Todd General Store are only 25 minutes away. Boone Shopping and Dining and ASU are only 35 minutes away. Tweetsie Railroad and Appalachian Ski Resort, Main Street Blowing Rock Shopping and Dining, The Virginia Creeper Trail, Sugar Mountain Ski Resort, Hawksnest Snow Tubing and Zipline, and Grandfather Mountain are only 40-45 minutes away. And Ski Beech is just an hour away.

Whether you plan on staying on the move and visiting the popular local attractions or you plan to slow down and just relax at the property, you will certainly be glad to come home to the beauty and tranquility of The Great Escape!

Recommend four wheel drive or all wheel drive in the winter. Last half mile is uphill a private gravel driveway.

About Gordie

We're a family of six with four kids who love the Great Escape - ages 10, 6, 4 and 1. We've always enjoyed the outdoors and the mountains. We rented the property in early 2014 and after a great weekend, decided to try to purchase it.

As former military members, my wife and i are happy to offer an 5% discount to Active Duty Military personnel. We also offer returning guests an 5% discount off of list price.

Gordie purchased this cabin in 2014

Why Gordie chose North Carolina

Spectacular views and chance to escape the city. It's very private and quiet with no other houses in sight. We wanted to have a place where our three children could tramp around and explore while we could relax with extraordinary views.

Tranquil Mountain Vacation

  • 5 of 5

This is a great property with many amenities that fit the Mountain vacation theme. After hiking the property or surrounding area you can relax in the hot tub or by the fire pit. There is a pond, ball field, lacrosse goals and fort for kids and kids at heart. Views are incredible and good fishing near by.

Wonderful week at the Great Escape

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week at the Great Escape - beautiful property with acres on which to roam. The house was roomy and comfortable with amazing views of the valley no matter the time of day. The unlimited firewood was a convenience and we spent each nite enjoying the sunset and after dark we took to enjoying the stars by the fire. Having no "human" sounds from traffic, planes or the like was wonderful!!

The house was set up well to provide all the things we needed to cook and serve meals for all. Gordie replied quickly to all questions we had and was great to work with. And having linens provided made the visit even easier. If we're going to be in this area again, we'd definitely re-visit the Great Escape.

Great property with great views!

  • 4 of 5

Let me start my review by saying the cabin was very nice, and situated at the top of a hill that provides some breathtaking views. We did encounter some issues during our stay which were resolved relatively quickly by the owner to allow us to continue on with our vacation and a good time.

I have outlined the issues below and their subsequent remedies:

• Upon arrival to the cabin we realized that some recent rain washed out the driveway. This was known prior to our arrival and should have been disclosed to us as I had communicated several times to the owner that we were bringing in 6 motorcycles on 2 different trailers. Our first attempt up the driveway with the motorcycles resulted in one of the riders dropping their bike causing little bit of damage. It took 3 days to get someone in to start working on the driveway, and once it got started it was much more suitable, at least for the trucks.

• Next, water pipe under the sink in the kitchen wasn’t attached. First attempt to run water in the sink resulted in a mess underneath that we had to clean up. Owner sent in someone to fix it quickly, which was much appreciated. Just a bit later, the refrigerator wasn’t cooling, freezer worked fine but the fridge wouldn’t get cold. I communicated with the owner and he found online to unplug and plug back in and that seemed to remedy the situation.

• Later in the trip I attempted to use the iron and realized that it didn’t work, and the metal plate wasn’t even attached. I called the owner and a new one was sent up.

All in all the cabin is great and I believe that myself as well as the owner were able to take away some good learnings from the trip.

The owner is great to work with and responds quickly via text and email which is great. I wouldn’t hesitate to rent from him again.

Side Note:

Small cabin doesn’t have wifi or cable, this should be outlined on the VRBO.com website

Owner's Response: Thanks for the review Kenny. Glad you enjoyed your stay even if there were a few snafus. We were especially surprised by the sink/fridge malfunctions since we had the kitchen renovated and a new fridge added six months ago. We have had several parties bring trailers/bikes up our driveway in the past with no issues so I thought you'd be fine when you asked about our driveway last fall before you booked. Unfortunately, a few days before you arrived, we had a massive rain storm that created some sizeable ruts so we started scrambling to get the driveway re-graded, as I let you know a few days before your stay. Despite our best efforts, we weren't able to get it re-graded before your arrival on July 2nd, but luckily we were able to get somebody to start working on the driveway on the evening of July 4th. Thanks again. Glad you enjoyed the views and peace and quiet.

Excellent place to have fun and relax!

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a wonderful time! The location of the cabin was perfect with easy access to Boone and its surrounding areas. After spending the day outdoors either horseback riding, hiking or rafting, the cabin provided a relaxing refuge to spend quality family time and watch the beautiful sunsets from the jacuzzi.

If you are a larger family or group this is your place!

Gordie was an excellent host and returned all phone calls and emails promptly.
