We have purchased an old Catskill-style bungalow colony near the village of Kerhonkson in a semi-rural area of Ulster County, NY. It consists of a main guesthouse, and three bungalows. We have decided to rent the newly refurbished back of the main guesthouse to vacationers. The front unit will be available later this summer and the other cottages are unoccupied.
Please keep in mind that this is a no-frills vacation rental -- a rustic country home, an artist's studio, writer's retreat and hiker's haven. The colony is still a work in progress, and a labor of love. If you are looking for something sleek or sophisticated, this is probably not the place for you. Still, the home is roomy, with windows everywhere that bring air, light and views of forest, meadow, the bungalows, and the pond. There is no TV reception, though we do have a TV and DVD player.
There is a large bedroom with local antiques with a view to the pond, and a smaller bedroom with a full-size bed that is airy and bright with views to the bungalows, AC window units in each bedroom. A decent sized open kitchen with vintage 1940s dining set, a living room and a front room that serves as a dining/sitting area but also has a full-size futon bed and can be closed off entirely as a bedroom. The place can sleep six people, though there is only one bathroom. Six is the maximum number of guests, please.
We have 5.5 acres of land, plus a large lawn and firepit/bbq. Our well water comes from off the mountainside, filtered through rock – it tested pure and it’s delicious.
We are located on the back slope of the Shawangunk Mountains, on the eastern edge of Roundout Valley, with the Catskills on the other side. We are a 12-minute walk to Old Minnewaska Trail, which leads right into Minnewaska State Park and all the climbing, hiking, biking, swimming, fishing, etc. you could want – no need to get in the car and drive to the park with all the masses. We are less than a 10-minute drive to Lake Minnewaska and about 15-20 minutes to Mohonk and New Paltz. The area looks like Vermont – verdant mountains and sustainable farms, plus wineries, antiques, galleries etc. It is a short drive to High Falls, Rosendale, Kingston and Woodstock. We are an easy 90 miles from NYC.

This property is unusual, rustic and historic - a real Bungalow Colony from days gone by
We enjoyed our brief stay at the cottage near Minnewaska! The house description was accurate; the house itself was clean and well-equipped with everything you might need for a getaway. We were provided with much more space and amenities (full kitchen!) at a similar price for what we would have paid at nearby B&Bs,--plus, dogs are welcome!--so this was definitely the right choice for us. Everyone in our party of four was really pleased with the place.
And David was very pleasant and easy to work with during the booking process--he provides a lot of information about the house and the area. We particularly enjoyed one restaurant he recommended (Graze) that's just down the road. Would definitely recommend this cottage to friends!
My friends and I spent 4 days out in this great hideaway. The house is a real find for nature aficionados!!! Not only does it sit on a great piece of lush property, but the house is within minutes distance to stunning watering holes and gorgeous park land.
The house is nestled right in the valley between Minewaska State Park, the Mohonk Preserve, and the Shawangunk Mountains. It also isn't too far from Catskill Mountain trails, for those who might want to head out for a good hike.
My suggestion is to fill up the fridge, pack day trip snacks and hit up some of the most beautiful nature NY State has to offer. Once you get back, that full fridge should have some good foods to grill. Afterwards, I hope you brought marshmallows, because the seats out by the fire-pit will melt your cares away while you toast them to perfection.
My friends and I had a fantastic time! We had everything we needed and felt perfectly at home the entire trip.
Right next to Minnewaska Park - hike in from our home - close to New Paltz, Mohonk, High Falls, Rosendale, Kingston, Woodstock and the Catskills
