|Minimum Stay||5 nights|
This 900 sqft classic, colonial apartment captures the essence of old world Cuenca. Enjoy the comforts of a home for what you’d pay for an average hotel (where all you get is a room with a bed and bathroom)!
Following the description of this apartment (at the bottom) is a 'checklist' of things you might consider when examining other listings. Be sure to look it over so you get the RIGHT FIT FOR YOU!!!
Now, about this apartment.....
Situated in an old colonial building, right in the heart of Cuenca’s El Centro, within easy walking distance to all the amenities you could possibly want! Even though the building dates back to before we were born, the apartment has been completely upgraded and modernized but without losing the character and charm.
- Close to the blue-domed Cathedral, flower market, and Parque Calderon, the center of the Universe when it comes to Cuenca’s activities, festivals, tourism office, tour bus, etc.
- EZ walk to large mercado brimming with fresh fruits, produce, and seafood
- Otavalan textile vendors (clothing, scarves, tapestries) line the nearby Plaza San Francisco
- Just a few blocks to the Tomebamba river and greenbelt, great for people watching, running, biking, exercise
- Eateries from cheap Ecuadorian to fancy to expat-owned all around you.
- Want a taxi or a bus? They're ripe for picking anywhere you happen to be in El Centro.
Elevators are very rare in the older buildings of Cuenca. The unit necessitates a 1 flight walk up.
The kitchen has plenty of counter (prep) space plus lots of upper/lower cabinets and drawers and…it’s fully stocked with everything you’ll need (except food!)…gas cooktop/oven, microwave, toaster, toaster oven, blender, coffee maker, food processor, and tall refrigerator. Coffee/tea, condiments, cooking oil and spices are also provided. Also, in this large space, you’ll find the washer AND a dryer (VERY uncommon here!!) and off to the side, an antique office desk for your computer moments.
The living room is HUGE with dramatic 11ft high ceilings of elaborate design, trimmed with equally dramatic crown moldings, and topped off with large, ornate, wrought iron chandeliers. Large windows let in plenty of light . The living area is outfitted with a large L-shaped sofa, flat screen TV (with HDMI ports so you can watch TV (even USA stations!) from your laptop), and DVD player (with library of over 100 DVD’s to choose from). Off to the side is the dining area with a nice table and 4 chairs. Throughout the apartment, you’ll find pieces of art by local artisans like ceramics by Eduardo Vega, handmade candelabras by local metalworkers, and Otavalan tapestries. You’ll be happy as a clam.
The bedroom is situated in the back away from the front of the building and has a queen-sized bed. It has a beautiful antique armoire (closet), its own private bath with shower (towels and bedding provided).
OH!! A cell phone AND internet are provided, too!
Yet another feature (as if you needed more!) is a rooftop terrace (exclusive acces for my guests only) with table and chairs, and great views daytime or nighttime.
Availability: Please consult the online calendar. I keep my calendar current at all times.
Pricing: You'll find the daily cost of this apartment to be less than an average hotel here in Cuenca, especially when you consider the additional expenses of eating out all the time. Ask yourself..."How many nights would I get for the same price, if I stayed at a hotel?”
When you arrive in Cuenca, I will pick you up at your arrival point (whether that be the airport, bus terminal, or van service), bring you to the apartment, give you a short orientation, answers any questions, and hand over the keys!!
YOUR CHECKLIST WHEN VIEWING OTHER LISTINGS
* Location. Can you walk to most everything you'll want to do, or do you always need to take a taxi or bus to get there?
* Does the unit have hot water at the kitchen sink, bathroom sink (rare here), and shower?
* Does the shower have direct-piped hot water, or one of those electric shower-heads that produce only lukewarm water (known as 'widow-makers')?
* Does the unit have an oven or just a cooktop?
* Does it have both a washer and dryer IN the unit?
* Does it have a tiny fridge? Is it sitting on the floor where you darn near have to get on your knees to get anything?
* If 2 people are sleeping in the same bed, can they walk around both sides of the bed? Is the bed FULL or QUEEN?
* Is the bed(s) located in the SAME space as the living room?
* Does the furniture look comfortable or is it rigid and formal and/or crammed together in a tiny space?
* Does the kitchen come with all the amenities you’ll want/need to prepare meals and save a few bucks from eating out all the time?
These kinds of things can make the difference between an 'okay' experience and a great one. Closely examine the photos in each listing and look for details in the descriptive write-up.
I am originally from the Seattle, WA, USA area. I've lived in Cuenca since early 2011.
Our 4 week stay with Dano was wonderful. He is knowledgeable about the area and surroundings and is willing to share. Upon entry, you are presented with ‘The Bible’… His folder of everything about his property, and how to get comfy quick in the neighborhood. He discusses practical matters of staying in his unit, safety, local shopping, groceries, eateries and adventures. Dano was always available and close for any questions we had. When we needed additional larger cookware (we were invited to a Thanksgiving dinner) Dano was able to quickly provide the large service pots my wife required. Speaking of which, the unit was very well stocked with all the goodies you would want at home; a complete kitchen, dining area for 4 (we squeezed in 5), a comfy sitting area with a large flat screen TV with DVD and HDMI for the few movies we watched. The property sits by a public plaza, and I enjoyed sitting on the little balcony above and watching the throngs of merchants and shoppers bartering there. There is also a wonderful roof top deck with seating and art, but we never got around to fully enjoying an evening up there. We found small tiendas all around for the quick shopping items, and a mercado is just a block away – 3 floors of wild and wooly shopping for ‘local’ market action. By the end of week one, we were buying our veggies, spices and meats there (perhaps not for the timid, it is Mighty Real!). For more traditional supermarket stuffs, we walked to across the river to ‘Super Maxi’ loaded up with specialty stuffs, and taxied back up. If it doesn’t show, my wife is quite the chef, and we cooked many meals at Danos. Our 4 week stay ended too fast, and we truly enjoyed our stay with Dano, and heartily recommend ‘Apt 3’ in Cuenca.
First time in Cuenca. We had a great time and were happy with the accommodations. This is a great location in the older part of the city call El Centro. Near everything. Dano the host had lots of info to share. He welcomed us when we arrived and made us feel at home immediately. This is a great place to stay in order to get familiar with Cuenca.
I have held off for a few days in writing this review due to still traveling around Ecuador but our thoughts remain the same. To give you an idea of how great this man and his apartment are, I just asked my wife what she would put in the title line for this review. We both started out exactly the same, "absolutely amazing"! Dano has the nicest, most convenient spot in Cuenca in our opinion. He has outfitted the apt with everything you could possibly need and then he backs it up with what he calls "the bible" notebook along with his personal support. If you want to know what to do, where to go, where to get it or anything else at all in relation to your stay here he has provided the info. It really helps with your comfort level when touring Cuenca or going to other towns. Anything I had a question with I either called him, on a cell phone he provided with the apt by the way, or emailed him and he was always there for us.
As for the apt it was fantastic. Directly overlooking the Plaza San Francisco and it had a great little balcony that you can sit out on and people watch for hours. Tired of the balcony? Then go up to the rooftop terrace loaded with plants, flowers and an awesome seating area with an even bigger view of the square and town! The location is such that you walk out the door and you are in the center of everything you could possibly need within two blocks or so. It's raining? Just walk out front and take a right and within 50' you can hail a cab while standing under the front porch dry. Need a bus out of the center? Walk two blocks west, drop a quarter in the bus of your choice and go anywhere in town on that quarter. The cabs averaged $1-2 but as high as $4 one time to go all the way to the NW corner of town??? Need any kind of fresh fruits, veggies, meats or prepared foods then go two blocks south to a huge market piled up with them. The place comes with a washer and dryer so we were able to pack for three weeks in just a backpack making it our easiest trip ever. This is a highly affordable place to stay and Dano has this place priced so low compared to what you are receiving it's almost unfair. When we checked out we stocked the place with some food, cleaning products, flowers in the vase for the next visitor and we cleaned the whole place from top to bottom even though Dano had it perfect already for us! This place is almost way too good to be true and we loved it! Dano, you know we will be in touch and will see you again soon!!!
We stayed in Dano's immaculate apartment for a month and enjoyed ourselves on many levels. Our transition was easy because of his efforts prior to and after our arrival. He guided us through the best approach to getting from Guayaquil to Cuenca, continued to communicate with us to ensure our comfort, contributed to our social calendar, and had a binder chock full of helpful information - a lot of which we could have spent the entire month learning if it were not for his tremendous effort.
The location is probably the best in Cuenca. We became immediately immersed in the Cuencano lifestyle with the daily activities in San Francisco Plaza across from our balcony. In addition, great restaurants, bars, parks, galleries, and entertainment venues were nearby.
The spaciousness of the apartment enhanced our comfort. The kitchen has am impressive amount of supplies and cookware. Also, the washer and dryer (not the small ones found in Parisian apts) were a bonus. There were plenty of quality linen, towels, and blankets.
We highly recommend staying at Dano's apartment.
My husband and I have stayed twice in Dano's apt.s. and both times the stay was above and beyond fabulous! Clean, comfortable and spacious with no detail left undone. Seriously, you feel you just walked into a staged home! ( even the spices are lined up like soldiers in the cupboard) Dano is great and goes out of his way to make your stay enjoyable. He greeted us at the airport, drove us around to show us a little bit of Cuenca before taking us to his apt. He has a mobile phone for your use which you can also call him with any concerns. On our first stay, the water main in the street broke and needed repair, and when we discovered we didn't have any water in the apt. Dano was there within minutes with big bottles of water and he called the city to find out when the pipe would be repaired. The repair men of course said soon! Dano kept on them and made sure it was repaired without taking days( which could happen here) and kept us supplied with water.
Dano has great recommendations for restaurants, places to see and things to do. He has an informational book in each apt. and it covers everything and anything you need to know about Cuenca, and how to use everything in his apts. which is very helpful when you go to use something and not sure how it works! ( i.e. washer and dryer)
Each apt. is furnished with quality appliances, a very nice washer and dryer, a very, very comfortable bed, sparkling bathrooms and beautiful decor! The location is perfect for the parks, downtown, and to walk everywhere to see the sights. With a living room overlooking the plaza, you can be entertained for hours watching the local vendors selling their wares, sightseeing tourists taking pictures,, and the indigenous local women with their panama hats& colorful dress loaded down with fresh fruits or veg! If you are lucky and there is a festival, you can see fireworks from your window. On the upper landing is a covered patio covered wit beautiful flowers, tables for sitting and enjoying the warm weather in the evenings.
Dano's apt.s are everything they say they are and you won't be disappointed staying here. We have traveled much, and sometimes places sound better than they are, especially if the price is reasonable, but in this case, it is all true! There are stairs, so if you are not able to do stairs, these apts.are not for you.
On our second trip we planned our trip around his vacancy so we wouldn't have to stay someplace else! Thank you Dano! You are the best!
The apartment was very roomy and as described in VRBO. Dano was an excellent host. Picked us up at the bus terminal. His recommendations to see and do were great; museums, gallery, Cajas park, symphony, bus tour, restaurants, etc. Dano has what he calls his Bible. Excellent information with details on apartment, restaurants, and much other useful info. Apartment is in fantastic location in Cuenco Centro; easy walking to many interesting sites and activities. Driver recommended (Orlando) was great; very good local knowledge, good English, and very helpful.
Dano is amazing. We had planned on driving to Cuenca and meeting him at the apartment but we had to change plans at the last minute and fly. His car was broke down but he still met us at the airport and rode in a taxi with us to the apartment. Once there he showed us how everything worked and didn'tindustrial when we peppered him with questions. He smiled while we were exclaiming how beautiful the apartment was. It is gorgeous! And he has a handy apartment bible that is filled with everything you could possibly need to know. Dano is amazing and his San Francisco apartment has everything you need. Everything you need is close by. You do not get this kind of treatment/service in a 5 star hotel, especially at the inexpensive price you pay. You need to stay here if you'really going to Cuenca. A perfect and romantic place.
Everything is right outside your door, or within just a few blocks.
