Leave your car in the drive and take a 10 min walk to watch Hawkeyes play at Fieldhouse or Kinnick; go to VA Hospital, UI Dental School, Law School, & all UI Hospital & Clinics. Beautiful home designed by Henry Fisk, Iowa City's only registered architect from 1934-60. Private garden entrance for downstairs apartment that is renovated to its' mid century modern glory. The studio where Henry worked will be your bedroom, with unique wood walls (sand-blasted plywood). Sitting room with fireplace, cable TV, record player and large windows. Small bar with microwave, coffeemaker and refrigerator. Private toilet with new shower. Driveway parking. Large yard on wooded lot--hear the birds chirping, only minutes away from UI hospital and Kinnick stadium!
I'm a well-traveled person who loves finding unusual and unique places to stay when I am away from home. I hope you will love our home for it's charm--I have tried to stay true to the original 1946 design as much as possible!
Sue Rhomberg purchased this apartment in 2013
I discovered this quiet, lil' dead end block when I moved to Iowa City last year. I asked my friends to let me know if a house ever came available on it, and last November I was lucky enough to buy this hidden first time that i saw the house, it was so full of junk that I couldn't even see the fireplace...But i could see the huge windows, the light, the sense of proportion and design, that was revolutionary for 1947!! The home was designed by Henry L. Fisk, for his family. Fisk was Iowa City's only architect from 1945-1960, and designed a number of wonderful structures around town.
Special plant window, that was featured in Better Homes and Gardens, back in 1949. Unique and interesting built in lighting in almost every room. House has a very private feel to it, in this very wooded though it is so close to everything!
Thanks again for having us, we enjoyed our stay and hope to come back again sometime!
We stayed the weekend for an Iowa Hawkeyes football game and the location was perfect. It was only about a 10 minute walk to Kinnick Stadium and less than a half hour walk downtown. The price was very affordable, especially when compared to hotels in the area for game day weekends. The owner was very welcoming and helpful. The apartment was very clean, quaint, and comfortable. It also had a very unique and original style which we enjoyed.
Nice place, comfortable. Property owner was very welcoming. Lots of nice personal touches to the place. Great sweet bread was delivered for breakfast!!
We loved the details in the apartment, the large windows and great space. Sue and her son made us feel very welcomed. We would definitely recommend staying in this lovely, comfortable apartment. You can walk to Hancher Auditorium, downtown Iowa City as well as the UI hospitals and stadium. We also walked to restaurants for dinner and enjoyed the lovely homes in the neighborhood.
Sue was an excellent host and super accommodating. I had a reunion with my classmates from Iowa City and she was amazing to work with. The house was eclectically decorated, and she had plenty of places for us to sleep. We would definitely recommend and stay again!!
Sue's place is exactly what we were hoping for. The big window greeted us every morning with views of the backyard. We really enjoyed walking around her neighborhood as well. Sue was very welcoming and accessible, she also provided us with sweetbread for the morning.
The rental is located in a safe, extremely wooded neighborhood. One of my favorite attractions was sitting with morning coffee at the huge window watching the birds, rabbits, squirrels and deer feeding in backyard. Plenty of walking and bike trails from rental. Pleasant walk to campus and the many different types of eating, my favorite was the "Blue Bird Dinner" for breakfast! My only regret is that my work project got delayed and Sue already had unit reserved for my return dates!
The main attraction is our proximity to University Hospital, VA Hospital, Dental School, Law School, UI Fieldhouse & Kinnick Stadium. Beautiful downtown Iowa City is a 20 min walk or a 5 min drive.
