About jason trochessett

I read an article about the Canadian Rockies in National Geographic nearly 40 years ago and began a quest to one day have a ranch in the most beautiful place in North America. Now it's a dream come true for friends from all over the world. When not being rented it's frequently used to raise money at auction for charities to help people in need and conservation organizations. I'm an avid fly fisherman and conservationist who believes in protecting wild and beautiful places such as the Elk River Valley in the heart of the Canadian Rockies.

jason trochessett purchased this lodge in 2002

Why jason trochessett chose British Columbia Mountains

The fishing, abundance and diversity of wildlife, scenery and setting on a historic ranch in the heart of the Canadian Rockies creates memories that last a lifetime. The dry fly fishing for wild cutthroat trout is world class and truly rare. The herds of elk that graze across the meadows is something most would only expect to see inside a national park, with crowds of people watching, but here we have it all to ourselves. The historic ranch provides a feeling of going back to a simpler place and time, clears the mind from distractions and stress of modern life and brings families and friends closer together.

What makes this lodge unique

Elk River Lodge is the only place to stay directly on the Elk River offering privacy and countless miles of fishing, hiking, riding, cross country skiing and wildlife viewing…Other accommodations are either not on the Elk River or they're in crowded areas that feel as though they could be in any city or ski resort.

Nice setting to get away from it all

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I rented the lodge for a weekend getaway and truly enjoyed it. Bill - the property manager ensured that we had everything we needed and answered questions about the area. Although we didn't bring our horses - it is a great set up for horses -with trails leading right from the property or a staging point not too far down the road if the river crossing behind the property is too high. You don't always have the entire property to yourself as there are horse boarders that visit the property - but lovely folks and it's nice to have a view of horses from almost every window. The woodstove in the living room made for cozy evenings and the path to the river made for great walks with our dog (appreciate that it is dog friendly) in the mornings and evenings as well. The wood furnishings and cabinetry are incredible pieces of artwork. It was a great getaway for us - we enjoyed experiencing the other side of the mountain and the local towns and beautiful backcountry. We loved the stream that ran behind the back deck- Thank you! We hope to return soon. Laura & John

3rd Year Consecutive Stay at the Ranch and will be back...

  • 5 of 5

My family has now stayed at the ranch for 3 consecutive years. Each year we look forward to our trip back to Sparwood to relax in comfort of the ranch, complete with excellent amenities, postcard views from every window and plenty of space for all of us.

Each stay has provided us with great family time and many memories. We use the ranch as a base for our daily trips to Fernie. After each day of fabulous skiing, we look forward to returning to the ranch, where we use the gourmet kitchen to create excellent meals where all 12 of us enjoy the visit around the large kitchen table.

This year was especially unique as we happened to hit the large snow dump which stranded us at the Ranch for 2 additional days . Bill (Ranch Caretaker) ensured we were well looked after, ensuring there was plenty of firewood and worked hard to allow us to safely drive out on the long picturesque road to head home. One would think that it was stressful to be locked in for two days, but the comfort of the ranch and the great hospitality of Bill and owner Jason made the trip even more memorable.

We will continue to return as this beautiful place nestled on the Elk River (complete with view of Elk every day) has become a tradition and a love for my family.

A little piece of Heaven

  • 5 of 5

We spent 5 wonderful days at the ranch with our family of 9 and everyone agreed this was by far the best winter getaway since we began this special outing eight years ago. We all loved the rustic feel to the beautifully finished place and with so much room we never once felt crowded. The dining room was perfect for our gang and still had plenty of room for more. The games room was another focal point for us.....playing various card and board games in front of a warm fire.

The kitchen was very well equipped and we just loved the look of the period fridge and stove. The oven turned out a perfect 12 lb prime rib roast...yumm. The large hot tub was a popular attraction after a day of skiing at Fernie or snowshoeing around the acreage.

The bedrooms were spacious and the beds were very comfortable and cozy. Nothing is better than a great sleep after a full day of being outdoors, or just relaxing with a good book.

We will definitely be requesting to return again next winter.

Incredible secluded escape

  • 5 of 5

We had our thanksgiving weekend (CDN) and got married at this place! It is one of the gems of the area. Incredible wilderness surrounds the ranch. Easy access to the elk river for fishing and scenery. Awesome house with really nice hand crafted cabinets and amenities. We loved sitting in the big leather chairs by the fireplace. I bet we saw 100 elk walk by the house!! Jason was a great host and Bill helped us truly feel comfortable and enjoy our stay. This is one of the good ones.
