About jason trochessett

I read an article about the Canadian Rockies in National Geographic nearly 40 years ago and began a quest to one day have a ranch in the most beautiful place in North America. Now it's a dream come true for friends from all over the world. When not being rented it's frequently used to raise money at auction for charities to help people in need and conservation organizations. I'm an avid fly fisherman and conservationist who believes in protecting wild and beautiful places such as the Elk River Valley in the heart of the Canadian Rockies.

jason trochessett purchased this lodge in 2002

Why jason trochessett chose British Columbia Mountains

The fishing, abundance and diversity of wildlife, scenery and setting on a historic ranch in the heart of the Canadian Rockies creates memories that last a lifetime. The dry fly fishing for wild cutthroat trout is world class and truly rare. The herds of elk that graze across the meadows is something most would only expect to see inside a national park, with crowds of people watching, but here we have it all to ourselves. The historic ranch provides a feeling of going back to a simpler place and time, clears the mind from distractions and stress of modern life and brings families and friends closer together.

What makes this lodge unique

Elk River Lodge is the only place to stay directly on the Elk River offering privacy and countless miles of fishing, hiking, riding, cross country skiing and wildlife viewing…Other accommodations are either not on the Elk River or they're in crowded areas that feel as though they could be in any city or ski resort.

Tranquil beauty

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely loved this place, quite the gem hidden in the elk valley just North of Sparwood BC.

A mile off the main road you'd think you were in the middle of the wilderness with the view from the deck.

The property is very well maintained and has all the amenities you could think of, a real home away from home.

I spent 5 nights here recently with my grown children and grandchildren, they loved it, especially the deck and hot tub, plenty of space and lots of bedrooms to accommodate all.

I really appreciated the décor and ranch feel of the main building, fireplace inside and fire pit outside, didn't get to use the outside fire pit due to the fire ban in effect for BC but this didn't detract from the overall excellent experience.

I found the location quiet enough it felt like wilderness but close enough to local towns and attractions we could switch from remote to town in about 15 minutes.

Lots to do in the surrounding area and if you like fishing the elk river truly is a gem not to be missed.

I'd have no problem returning to this location and would recommend to anyone looking for something special beyond the standard condo located in a town.

The booking, check in and check out were seamless and handled very professionally,

Two thumbs up, go there, you'll love it.

Owner's Response: Well put. Thank you...the experience of having an entire ranch all to yourselves to roam and explore provides so much peace and tranquility as you mentioned and the fishing is the best due to the lack of pressure. There's no other place like it in the Elk Valley that provides so much space, especially for large groups like yours. We're continuing to make improvements constantly to make it the very best in the Canadian Rockies. We appreciate you staying very much and look forward to your return.

Owner's Response: Thanks Chuck. After searching for 30 years to find this place and the last 15 or so restoring the historic lodge and barn, it's wonderful to know our guests love it as much as we do. It will be even better next year with the new outdoor sauna and game room in the hayloft!

Most beautiful place we've ever stayed

  • 5 of 5

Our family has never been to a more beautiful, authentic inspiring place. Staying in this lodge with my family and friends, nine of us, was nothing short of incredible. Having an entire historic ranch with total privacy to explore and enjoy all to ourselves was epic. The fishing straight from the property in the elk river which borders the property and in the spring creek next to the lodge and pond provided the solitude we wanted and beautiful fish. We hiked in Elk Lakes provincial park and saw the most beautiful scenery and a moose! We all enjoyed the hot tub and played games in the hayloft in the barn, listened to old records, and enjoyed a roaring fires in the wood stove. The lodge itself was large enough for all of us, with amazing beds, custom furnishings and a one of a kind kitchen. We enjoyed the large dining room and eating out on the deck while watching trout rise in the spring creek!

Our kids want to move there now and won't stop talking about it. We'll definitely be coming back.

The perfect place to reconnect with family!

  • 5 of 5

My Husband and I took our 3 boys (8, 7 and 5) to the ranch to regroup and reconnect after a fun but long summer. We felt like we could truly get off the grid here if we wanted to. We hiked some of the most scenic trails and some pretty intense ones too! The boys fished and played at the river that's at the edge of the property and had so much fun. We got to feed horses and play games and look for wildlife. The town of Fernie was a quick trip when we wanted to get ice cream and new hiking boots. We stayed with another family of four and there was plenty of room to play and eat and sleep. The property manager, Bill, was so helpful with questions and instructions on things we were unsure of! It was clean and every comfort of home was provided. I was also super impressed that they drain the hot tub between guests!! We would love to come back in the winter sometime but this will definitely be an annual summers end trip for us! I highly recommend this lodge!

Great location for family reunion

  • 5 of 5

For the second year, our family (6 adults, 6 children) gathered at this ranch for our annual get-together. It is an excellent location for us - large, well-equipped home, indoor and outdoor (with a great view) dining, fishing river at the edge of the property, groceries & liquor < 10 miles away, general shopping and mountain trails 20 miles away. My favorite spot is the porch with a large picnic table, hot tub, and views of horse pastures on the property in the foreground and mountains in the near distance. Good space for the kids to run & jump. Very peaceful!
