LOST RIVER, WV is 2 hours from DC, 2.5 – 3.5 hours from Baltimore and Richmond, and 5 hours from Philadelphia. It is situated between the George Washington National Forest, and the Lost River State Park.
The ground floor of this secluded cabin features a living room, dining room, half bath, kitchen, screened porch and large deck with stunning views. The second floor has huge bathroom (with amazing shower) and bedroom with private deck. The third floor is an open loft, with another large private deck and the best views. Each floor has a ceiling fan, hardwood floors, and tons of windows.
The cabin sits on 5 wooded acres, atop a very steep, secluded hill. AWD recommended, but even without AWD most cars can get MOST of the way up the hill, but no guarantees. The cabin has wifi, in-ceiling speakers, comfy chairs and beds, and soothing views over acres and acres of wilderness. Unfortunately there is no trash service, so guests must remove their own trash.
Dogs only. No cats or other pets, please. No smoking anywhere on property.
RATES: Please note that the daily rate is for two (2) people. Each additional person over 5 years old is $35 per night. Holiday rates apply. The dog fee is $50 per pet, per visit and a maximum of two dogs.
I do not currently offer a military discount.
I built the cabin starting in 2007 based on plans I found on The original version of the cabin was designed for a couple in Maine. The Maine version has lots more windows, which after visiting my copy, you'll find hard to believe! I fell in love with Lost River after spending many weekends at friends' houses here. You'll love it too!
Kevin Wood purchased this cabin in 2008
Great location close to everything (15 mins to yoga, Lost River General Store, LR Crafts Cooperative, a bit further to the State Park and Trout Pond). View from the cabin is trees, trees, trees and very little that is man-made. You feel like you're in a tree fort!
A cabin that is modern! Clean lines, very bright, very open. Great kitchen, large deck and screened porch.
My family and I enjoyed our Thanksgiving holiday in this wonderful retreat, just hours outside of DC. Waking up to the rolling hills of West Virginia provided much needed respite from the city. The well appointed kitchen and charcoal grill allowed to cook and share our meals together. Highly recommended!
My husband and our two dogs stayed at Kevin's cabin for 5 nights in August, and we had the most relaxing time! The cabin is full of things to do, with books galore, magazines, and games - not to mention the breathtaking views. The home is so modernized and very comfortable - it feels like home. I fell in love with the amount of windows in the cabin, and the mornings were my absolute favorite part of the vacation. The sunrise was absolutely perfect.
Two of the days we left the cabin and went exploring. We were lucky enough to go through Lost River (or Lost City?) and find a local meat market (Teet's Meat Market I believe), a café/gift shop right next to the meat market (which is also right next to the Yoga studio), and also a farmer's market all within 10 miles from the cabin, which made for some delicious local grilled dinner. We also found a gravel road off in the distance near Trout Pond/George Washington National Forest, and saw a baby black bear cub cross the road right in front of our car! It was quite the sight!
Also, with me being an animal lover, I was very happy to see two dog beds as well as dog bowls already at the cabin (even though we brought our own). The dogs absolutely loved the decks to sunbathe and the woods to run around in.
I would recommend bringing bottled water if you struggle with the hard water. We brought a few cases just in case and it worked out perfectly.
We would highly recommend this cabin if you are looking for the perfect quiet, secluded getaway!
My spouse, our 2 dogs and I had a great weekend at Kevin's cabin on the hill. The 3 levels of decks are wonderful for sitting out in the evenings and watching the stars. An unexpected bonus was that the decks are high enough off the ground to mitigate the concerns about mosquitos so you can sit and relax in peace even though you are in the woods. We throurouly enjoyed our weekend and plan to go back when the leaves are changing.
We enjoyed our stay at the modern cabin. It was everything we needed to basically "unplug" and "unwind". Very remote. We originally planned to do some hiking in the nearby national park but once we arrived we never left the cabin. The cabin had everything we needed for the weekend. The sunrise was beautiful. Enjoyed the balcony with some coffee, a blanket and a good book. Would recommend a stay here.
we had a great time over labor day at this quiet retreat. We couldn't have asked for a nicer place in the mountains. Thanks.
This is a beautifully appointed, very private vacation home. With three levels of porches facing east, the home encourages early risers to grab that cup of coffee and head outdoors to greet the sun. The porches are also well-suited for "something cool" when cocktail hour rolls around. The house seems best for a couple, small family with very well-behaved children, or a close circle of considerate friends since the open floor plan is, indeed, open.
We found all the kitchen equipment we needed for home-cooked meals, and enjoyed grazing through the ample supply of "American Heritage" and other books while relaxing. One favorite spot was the dining room, with terrific natural light and room to spread out reading, writing or drawing materials. The gorgeous rugs and distinctive design/decor elements lend an air of artistry.
The driveway truly is steep, just as the description clearly states, and we chose to park 100 feet from the top, to save the undercarriage of our Prius. Everything in the home was "as billed," and we found Kevin to be highly responsive and helpful.
The location was convenient to our activities of choice in the Lost River area: walking or biking on country roads, hiking in the George Washington Forest, and swimming at Lost River State Park. We also enjoyed Lost River Brewing in Wardensville.
As VRBO users for 18 years, we are extremely tough raters, and still give this property 4 stars. We've only given 5 stars once.
