About the property

A secluded home-from-home with spectacular views and daily housekeeping

El Tejar is the highest house in the small village of Montecorto, just 15 minutes from Ronda, with amazing panoramic views of the Grazalema mountains.

This exceptionally romantic house (featured in several interior design magazine) is decorated in Andalusian/Moroccan style. Whitewashed beams and terracotta floors have been stylishly combined with warm colour washes. There are hundreds of books, CD players in all rooms, a collection of beautiful paintings and prints as well as wifi internet (with desktop iMac). The 4 large bedrooms have the same bright/ethnic feel: linen is top range, mattresses too, and all are en suite.

A charming housekeeper, Francisca, cleans and tidies every day (if you so wish) and can prepare typical Andalusian meals. Sculpted into the hillside is a circular pool surrounded by terraces shaded by olive, almond and citrus trees. El Tejar is an exceptional holiday home - not just an ordinary villa - and perfect for a relaxing, secluded and spoiling holiday.

Included daily help: Two hours of daily cleaning help from a charming, and discreet Spanish maid is included in the weekly rental price.

(Occasionally guests prefer for Francisca not to come up to El Tejar to clean and tidy. No problem....).

What is so unique about El Tejar is that, if you should wish, the housekeeper can also prepare meals. She can either make you a wide range of 'tapas' for you or can cook a full 3 three course meal (this is for a minimum of 4 people) which will be served to you at your candlelit dining table or out on the dining terrace when the weather is warm enough.

Why is this place so exceptional?: What's so special about El Tejar is that although you're at the edge of the village, when you sit on the terraces or by the pool no other house is visible. You have the best of both worlds: easy access to village shops and bars and an utterly secluded location.

We believe we have the most comprehensive guest information of any rental property in the area which includes information on the best local bars and restaurants, where to visit, and detailed route notes of the area's most beautiful walks including our own guide books to the area (see Guy Hunter-Watts 'Walking in Andalucia' and 'The Andalucían Coast to Coast Walk', Santana Books).

Renowned travel writer Alastair Sawday recently included El Tejar amongst his top ten favourite places to stay in Southern Spain and we've had features written about the house in several UK newspapers. We are also recommended as a rental property by i-escape, the award-winning travel website.

A bit more about the village and the area: Montecorto is a quiet, friendly village. There are a number of bars and restaurants including one in the pine forest where you can have al fresco meals. There will always be somebody who is keen to talk to you! There is a bakers, four small grocery stores - two of them provide baskets so you can pick things off the shelf, a useful thing for non-Spanish speakers - as well as a bank and chemists. A lot of the fruit and vegetables for sale in the village come from the fertile terraces beneath the village. If you prefer to shop in supermarkets, there are several choices in Ronda, just 15 minutes from El Tejar.

We provide arriving guests with a booklet listing our favourite bars and restaurants, interesting visits in the area, maps of the village, of Ronda and of the surrounding area, a history of the house and general information about the house. We have found that this little booklet really helps you get the most out of this beautiful area where we've lived for more than two decades.

About Guy Hunter-Watts

I have lived and worked in Spain as a freelance writer and walking guide for almost 30 years. I wrote several editions of the Sawday hotel guides to Spain and Portugal as well as my own guide to charming small hotels. I am author of four Cicerone guides to walking in Spain: Walking in Andalusia, Coastal Walks in Andalusia. The Andalusian Coast to Coast Walk and The Mountains of Ronda & Grazalema.

Guy Hunter-Watts purchased this villa in 1988

Why Guy Hunter-Watts chose Ronda

El Tejar is no ordinary rental property but rather a home-from-home. The owner lived here for more than 20 years and you will find a huge collection of books along with lots of original artwork.

This warm and welcoming atmosphere also extends out into the village where you will be given the friendliest of welcomes by the people in the village of Montecorto, one of the prettiest of the 'pueblos blanks' or 'white villages'.

What makes this villa unique

Travel writer Alastair Sawday described the views from the house as 'some of the best in Spain'. The house is hidden away at the very top of the village: it's utterly secluded yet still within easy walking distance of shops, bars and restaurants.

Unique, beautiful and stylish.

A wonderful home, with everything you need for a fantastic holiday. This is a lovely large four bedroomed house, right on the edge of Montecorto village, with all its charm. El Tejar is a fantastic place to stay and relax, we enjoyed the cool interior, and the pool for lazy afternoons.

Brilliant place to stay - A great place for Exploring or Chilling

  • 5 of 5

Where to start?

From our initial inquiry through to arrival, the owner (Guy) has been quick, accurate and super helpful in helping us enjoy our week break at Montecorto.

Its a little tricky to find when you first get to Montecorto - but that's because its such a small, narrow street-ed, pretty, white village. You'll find it - the directions given are correct!

We went in mid July - and it was hot in Spain the week we were there - but the villa is a relief from the outside heat. There's no AC - but it's not needed. Plenty of shade and plenty of breeze.

A small pool helped keep us cool as well. Small pool - but enough room for the 8 of us - and enough room around the pool to comfortably seat us all.

The 8 of us stayed in 4 double rooms - each room unique - and each room really charming. All had their own loos and baths which incorporated welcome showers.

Plenty of comfortable room to sit around on - inside and (more importantly) outside

Kitchen was well equipped - we needed nothing - although we didn't cook in at all - only breakfast etc. There's plenty of places to eat / drink in the town

Guy also sends in some help each day to do a little cleaning, and to keep the place looking tip-top. That was a nice touch.

Overall - absolutely no problems - and no disappointments. I'd go back again.

Thanks Guy

A Slice of Heaven!

  • 5 of 5

Very difficult to know where to begin in describing the virtues of this house. The architecture itself is a terrific example of the vernacular and takes wonderful advantage of the site, climbing up the mountain in levels that give every room wonderful views and allows for multiple terraces and stairs. The pool with its fountain is clean and cool, even on a very hot day. The bedrooms are ample with private bathrooms that are simple and handsome, with exposed timber and pitched roofs and arches everywhere. Paqui's cooking is excellent. What a treat to have a meal prepared for you and your friends, so that after a day out, you can relax on the terrace (after taking a swim and sharing a bottle of wine). In fact you can simply reach up into the arbor above you and snip off a clump of tasty grapes if it's August. Around the corner from the house are two fig trees for dessert! Montecorto is a sweet village, close to Ronda but in tourist season you're glad not to be too close. My merry band of friends and I had a wonderful time.

Beautiful location

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful holiday in Montecorto. The entire area is stunning this time of year, and the house has a beautiful garden. The kitchen could use an update: it was always crawling with ants because the counters/cupboards are not properly sealed. Great information from the owner about the area.

A great Spanish experience

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful scenery, tastefully decorated and set in a quintessential Andulucian village, this was perfect to come home to after exploring the sights of Ronda, Seville and Granada. The famous white villages and the village itself were worth exploring. Pity that we were only there for a week...

Super cosy house in a white villeage of Andalusia

  • 5 of 5

We spent our first week in Montecorto in el Tejar, since Dar Hajra – the other house we wanted to stay at was already booked. This very cosy and homely place would perfectly fit a bigger family, providing comfort and privacy for everybody. The property is neat and tidy with stylish interior design. All the necessary facilities are included and extensive collection of guidebooks and maps makes it easy to plan your trips.

The location is very special thanks to great mountain views and a calming sound of the nearby spring. It is a truly unique place to spend quiet, relaxing holidays in stunning natural surroundings and with numerous tourist attractions within a stone's throw. We'll definitely recommend it to our friends!

The pretty village of Montecorto is at the edge of the Grazalema National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere reserve, which has some of the best hiking in Europe.

The owner of El Tejar has written the Cicerone guide to the best walks in the area - The Mountains of Ronda & Grazalema. You will find a copy of the guide at the house: it describes 32 walks which are all within driving distance.

Montecorto is one of the 'pueblos blancos', a cluster of white hill villages which stretch from Arcos in the west to Ronda in the east. These villages are amongst the prettiest in Spain.

The village has all amenities that most guests would need: bars, restaurants, a bakers, fishmonger, chemist, doctor's surgery, petrol station etc.

Ronda, one of Europe's most beautiful and spectacular mountain towns, is just a 15 minute drive from the house. As well as fascinating historical monuments Ronda has an enormous selection of restaurants including a Michelin-starred establishment close to the famous bridge and gorge.

All guests benefit from detailed information at the house regarding walks, eating and visits.

Here are our top ten sightseeing recommendations:

1. RONDA (15min from Montecorto)

Ronda is best visited from about 3pm onwards! By then the coaches and the day-trippers are heading back for the coast and the town regains its dignity. Don’t miss: Bull Ring & Museum, Mondragón Palace, Casa del Rey Moro and La Mina, the Arab baths, main shopping street of Calle Espinel, the Alameda Gardens and if you like art, El Museo de Joaquín Peinado. My book The Mountains of Ronda & Grazalema includes a walking tour of the old town which takes in all the most beautiful monuments.

2. GRAZALEMA (25min from Montecorto)

Grazalema is the showcase ‘white village’ in our area, recently voted one of Spain’s 10 most beautiful villages with a spectacular mountain perch and loads of bars and restaurants. It once was famous for it’s cottage weaving industry. One blanket factory remains which makes beautiful woolen goods – La Fábrica de Mantas.

3. ZAHARA (30min from Montecorto)

A great day excursion is to visit Zahara after Grazalema, driving the high mountain road that links the two villages via the Puerto de Las Palomas pass. As you each Zahara from Grazalema be sure to stop at the El Vínculo olive mill to the left of the road and let the mill’s owner explain what makes for ‘extra-virgin’ oil. Cost of visit currently €3 including an oil tasting. Afterwards, climb a quarter of an hour to the top of the old Moorish tower for a stunning sunset.

4. ARCOS de la FRONTERA (50min from Montecorto)

Arcos, like Ronda, has a dramatic cliff-side perch. There are masses of churches, the most interesting being the Cathedral and San Pedro. An interesting visit is to the local convent to buy biscuits from the Convent next to the Parador (see Rough Guide). There aren’t too many tourists and a visit is easily combined with one to Jerez de la Frontera. If visiting both towns start with Jerez in the morning and leave Arcos for the late afternoon when the light is at its best.

5. THE PILETA CAVE (30min from Montecorto)

If caves are your thing, then the Pileta Cave is a must. For opening times check the website

The quirkiness of the guides’, the spluttering light of the Davey lamps as well as the ‘tites, ‘mites and paleolithic art make the vist an unforgettable part of your holiday. Wear sensible shoes – surfaces are slippery.

6. JEREZ de la FRONTERA (1hr 20min from Montecorto)

Top visits here are the old town centre, the Royal Ecuestrian School and the sherry bodegas. The González Byass bodega visit is particularly well organised.

7. MONTEJAQUE (20min from Montecorto) is a pretty ‘white village’ that you pass by as you drive to the Pileta cave. There isn’t a deal to see or do but it is nice to sit in the pretty palm-lined square and watch the world go by …

8. ACINIPO (15min from Montecorto)

Roman site high above Montecorto. The theatre has amazing accoustics and, standing at 999m, has a ridge-top view for miles and miles around. You’ll be asked for an ID number. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

9. SETENIL de las BODEGAS (30min from Montecorto)

After a visit to Acinipo drive on to Setenil, another of the white villages with a number of bodegas built into the cliff face where wine was once stored. The upper part of the town is well worth a visit, too, and there aren’t too many tourists to spoil the charm of the place.

10. SEVILLA (1hr 45min from Montecorto)

‘Must-dos’ include: climbing the Giralda, wandering the narrow streets of the Santa Cruz, visiting the María Luisa park, taking a boat cruise down the Guadalquivir and visiting the Bellas Artes museum.

And, an additional bonus to anybody with a love of good wine, Montecorto is close to some of the areas top bodegas (wineries). We can highly recommend the tastings and tours that are offered by Descalzos Viejos, Chinchilla and Conrad. A google will bring up the relevant details.
