If an atypical country getaway is what you’re looking for with the convenience of modern fixtures and fittings then this could be the place for you. Great care has been taken to ensure you have everything you need making this a home from home.

The Lady Rothschild Dairy consists of 3 luxury self-catering apartments round a U-shaped central courtyard and we have also recently introduced a few more houses - a small cottage sleeping up to 4 and a large farmhouse, Morland Manor which is filled with beautiful art and antiques. The Estate (OHL Limited) has restored many original features whilst still incorporating high standards to workmanship including modern kitchens and bathrooms. Sorry, No Pets.

The houses sleep up to 8, 10 and 12 people, all of which are finished with an emphasis on quality, in a style that is both comfortable and elegantly modern. The solid oak finishes and natural features make each house individual.

The location is rural but conveniently close to amenities including the local market town of Oundle rich with its excellent independent shops. It is not uncommon to spot an assortment of animals on the estate including deer, badgers, squirrels, foxes, rabbits, red kites and many more.

The houses are available to rent all year round and the changing seasons offer something different with each visit.

Please note that due to The Lady Rothschild Dairy’s rural location, phone signal can be poor. Wi-fi and internet access is not always guaranteed for the same reason so please take this into account when making a booking.

The History:

Formerly known as Ashton Wold Farm, The Lady Rothschild Dairy was constructed for Nathanial Charles Rothschild in 1900-1901 and designed by William Huckvale. The farm was constructed as part of a new country estate envisaged by Charles Rothschild, within woodland which had been purchased by the Rothschild family in 1860.

Charles Rothschild (1877-1923) worked as a partner in the family investment banking firm NM Rothschild and Sons, which was based in London, but is also known for his pioneering work in entomology and nature conservation.

The Lady Rothschild Dairy was designed as a dairy farm, with various buildings arranged around a courtyard and constructed of local building materials such as limestone and thatch, in Vernacular Revival Style. Constructed at the turn of the 20th century, when agriculture and farming in England were in decline, the complex was constructed as a ferme ornee. The complex comprises a U-shaped range of cow-houses around a central fold-yard with ancillary buildings including a detached dairy (The Sir Isaac Newt Library), in addition to a dove-cote (The Store), cart shed and cow-mans cottage (Home Farm Cottage).

It is of exceptional architectural interest for the high quality of its design which reflects the vernacular building traditions of the region and for the level of craftsmanship evident in the working of the materials chosen for its construction.

The buildings have been awarded Grade II* listed status.

Why OHL Ltd - Carol Maibaum chose Peterborough

Ashton Estate is one of the best kept secrets - the private Estate is the perfect place to unwind with family and friends. Although the location is quite rural there are loads of places to visit nearby - including Oundle (10 minutes away but 8 of those minutes are through the beautiful traffic free Estate), Stamford and Peterborough. Phone signal and wifi are not always guaranteed but nobody seems to mind and we have loads of repeat guests. At most times we do have wifi which isn't strong so no good for streaming but you can check emails etc

The Ashton Estate is, in our view, a fascinating work of both man and nature. The Estate has an interesting socio-economic history comprising a “model settlement” (created at the turn of the 19th century by a mercantile family) superimposed on a more ancient village. Whilst the function of many estate buildings has changed, much of the “model settlement” remains physically intact, an unlikely outcome given the dynamics of modern life. The more ancient settlement is represented by a number of Grade II Listed buildings. Several of the “Edwardian” buildings are also Listed.
