You can also enjoy a peaceful kayak ride on our two KAYAKS. Boat & paddleboard rentals are available at the local marinas, or you can use our BOAT LAUNCH RAMP to launch your own.

Watauga Lake is an extremely beautiful and clean recreational lake (3rd cleanest in the country) located in the Cherokee National forest with 105 miles of shoreline. More than half of the lake is mountainous national forest and cannot be developed, so its really naturally beautiful and not crazy overpopulated with boats. This hidden gem is known to be one of the most beautiful lakes on the east coast. Watauga lake is great for boating, jet-skiing, tubing, skiing/wakeboarding, fishing, swimming, kayaking etc.
Downstream of the dam is a very popular whitewater rafting area as most of the local companies in TN and NC bring their patrons here. Hiking is also very popular as the Appalachain trail and a couple of small waterfalls are nearby. This property is also close to attractions in Boone, Banner Elk and Blowing Rock, NC and also attractions in eastern TN.
We have great sunny summers with no mosquitoes and beautiful fall colors when the leaves change. In the winter time, skiing is a popular option at nearby Sugar and Beech Mountain. This is a spectacular mountain and lake getaway.

Wonderful location and very roomy. The house was even larger than I expected and my party did not feel cramped. The extra large refridgerator is a plus because the grocery stores are not around the block but we anticipated that and the fridge easily held all of our food and drinks. The patio and deck area are wonderful for cookouts and relaxing in the evening. Can't be enough said about having a private dock for fishing, boating and using the owners kayaks. The lake is beautiful and peaceful. Only negative is we could not get the Wifi to work but the owner was responsive and we just went old school and used the landline for communicating with our group (no cell service for Verizon customers). We plan on making a return trip.
We had a long 7 hour drive, but it was worth it. It is always a difficult time making your way to the lake by at first winding roadways and then eventually one lane country road, Sugar Hollow Road, with a boat in tow. That is usually the case though with lake front homes. The one way road was only a couple miles and if we approached an oncoming car, they pulled off the road for us. Be sure to use a GPS and not rely on cell phone google maps as you will lose most of the map function in the mountains. The house was beautiful and plenty large for the 6 of us. It was very stocked with practical and cleaning items which was nice. The only problem in the kitchen was the manual can opener needed replaced. It barely worked to open my can of green beans. I brought a crock pot to cook pulled bbq while we boated. This might be a good additon to the house. It was nice to have a meal ready after a long day of boating. I kayaked for the 1st time and I loved it. The lake was very serene and not many boaters. We had nice neighbors that had just purchased the house across the cove. It was hard to find a marina map and took us 2 days but finally bought one at Fish Springs Marina, which the property manager recommend visiting to buy nice Watagua t-shirts to bring home. The gas was reasonable at that marina but not at Mallard Cove Marina, which was the closest to us. However, Mallard Cove had large Carp fish at their docks that you have to see and feed. At one point we had lost electricity with no storm. Julie and Janelle returned my call promptly to tell me the Electricity Co was working on the problem. We had service with our Sprint phone and on the lake occasionally our Verizon phones. When the electricity went out the land line phone was cordless and would not work. I am wondering if we had left and locked up, if the electronic locks on the doors would not have opened/worked?? The electricity came back on within a couple hours. We had 4 different dogs that visited regularly. They were all friendly. I love the privacy and seclution we felt with the location. You could walk through the property/peninsula to the end of the property on a pathway. I was hoping to see a bear, but saw cows and a mule instead off the shore of the lake while boating. My son bought a little net from a marina and had fun catching tiny fish at our dock. I would love to return another summer. Thank you for renting your home to us for the week. The Turner Family
This house is in a very quiet, peaceful cove. The other reviewers were correct in many of the things they said: The beds and linens are very comfortable, there is no cell phone service at the house, the internet connection worked great except for one rainy evening, and the location was ideal for us. Being 35 minutes from Boone and Elizabethon gives you additional options for outings. The owners were very attentive to my needs, and provided quick responses to our questions. I highly recommend this property!
We just got back from this amazing property! It was exactly as pictured and had everything we needed. My husband enjoyed fishing from the dock with the kids and I enjoyed relaxing in the hammock. We rented a boat for a couple days from a nearby marina and the process was super easy. The kids loved swimming and kayaking around the lake. Thank you for sharing your home, disconnecting and spending time together was just what we needed before the school year begins.
This house was wonderful. We stayed a week with our 3 kids and dog. The bedrooms allowed plenty of room for the whole family. The house was very well stocked with paper towels, garbage bags, toilet paper, etc. The full size refrigerator and freezer was a great help since we took all our food for the entire week. We were without power for the first 3 nights of our stay due to a severe storm the night before our arrival (we were told about this on our way there and chose to continue our trip). We did fine with the charcoal grill and fire pit and due to the surrounding trees, the house remained cool without the air conditioner. .The owners stayed in contact with us to update us on the progress of the power company. We used the picnic table on the covered patio for each of our meals so we did not miss having a dining table inside, although a folding table large enough for 8 is available. The property was located on a great quiet inlet with almost no boat or jet ski traffic which made kayaking and swimming. The dock was great. We rented a pontoon for several days and were able to tie it to the dock each night. The lake drops off almost immediately at the shore so I would like to recommend a ladder for the dock as it is a bit difficult to get out of the water when swimming. We have already talked about planning a return trip.
Wonderful house. Owner responds promptly to all inquiries. Watauga Lake is a beautiful, serene location. We are beach people, but would rent this house again if we decide to vacation in the mountains. Great clean place to spend a quiet week.
