Secluded 2 bedroom 2 bathroom 1928 timber luxury self catering cottage.

Surrounded by it's own beautiful large garden the cottage is situated at Gidleigh Park in the wooded River Teign valley on rugged Dartmoor. At the fringes of the vibrant, attractive village Chagford with all it's amenities. It's ideal for romantic breaks or 4 friends. The seclusion, privacy and clean air will really appeal to those looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday city life at any time of year.

This unusual house in the heart of Devon was originally constructed as the Cook's residence on the estate of the private house that subsequently became the 2 Michelin Starred Gidleigh Park Hotel. Recently lovingly restored and extended the luxury boutique interior now houses a combination of beautiful modern designer and antique furnishings.

The house comprises of a large well kitted out cooks kitchen with dining area. Separate utility room with sink,washing machine, tumble dryer and room for boots and coats. There is a sitting room with modern glass extension, mezzanine office and snug and two double bedrooms each with their own bathrooms. Doors open out to two decked terraces with separate dining area's at the front and back of the house. Stunning large garden mainly laid to lawn and herbaceous borders surrounded by fields and ancient woodland. Help yourself to vegetables and herbs from our raised beds when in season. The garden is enclosed from the lane by our large drystone wall.

Luxuries provided include bathrobes, 600 thread count Egyptian cotton towels and bed linen and locally produced vegan palm oil free soaps. There are comforting throws, firewood and kindling, large TV and DVD player, movie and CD library, WIFI and use of two music systems.

There is a diverse book library and many recipe books and board games.

Two log burners, one in the dining area and one in the sitting room add to the romantic feeling. These compliment the oil fired underfloor and radiator heating.

Welcome hamper of locally produced products and a starter pack of fresh bread, milk, butter and eggs to kick off your stay is included.

There are kitchen basics including tea, coffee capsules, oil, vinegar,herbs and spices.

Also the house is stocked with all the usual essentials you would expect in a working home such as dishwasher and laundry powder, an iron and ironing board and hairdryer.

Private gated off road parking for 2 cars.

The house is situated at the upper reaches of the wooded River Teign valley in the foothills of beautiful Dartmoor with it's granite tor's, Bronze Age circles, mossy cleaves and wild ponies. There are countless walks from the doorstep of the house up on to the moor, into the lowland countryside and to the local pubs and restaurants. Alternatively get up on a horse to explore - there is a good riding school not far away. Visit the Sandy coves of the Southern Devon coast and the huge surf beaches of the North. The largest outside swimming pool in Devon is at a beautiful location in Chagford next to the River Teign.

There is a spa, gym, sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, indoor pool, 18 hole golf course and tennis courts at the nearby Bovey Castle Hotel, all five star facilities available to non-residents.

We are a 5 minute stroll from the 2 Michelin starred Gidleigh Park Hotel (but totally private from it) and 1.5 miles to the attractive stannary town of Chagford with it's handsome 15th and 16th century buildings. Voted best village to live in the UK in the Sunday Times 2015 guide. It has several pubs, restaurants, cafes, boutiques and large range of useful shops including an excellent hardware and moorland clothing shop, dairy, butcher, greengrocer and delicatessen.

Chagford is an easy 4 miles from the main A30 and Gidleigh Park is a further short 5 minute drive from the village.

Much of Dartmoor is remote so if you are looking to explore comprehensively and get to the coast then a car is a must. Either bring your own or hire one at Exeter St David's Station if you arrive by train. We can recommend a car hire company.

Up to 2 small to medium sized mature dogs (ie not puppies) welcome after prior discussion with the owner. Dog's are strictly not allowed on furniture or to be left unattended in the house.

Alternatively, you can simply take a taxi from the station at Exeter and spend your time here exploring on foot. Chagford is a beautiful 20-25 minute walk or 5 minute drive from the house.

Why Adam Sawers chose Murchington

When my partner and I first spotted this house it took a massive leap of faith to buy it! It started out as a place where we would spend our weekends out of London. Over the years we have lovingly restored it piecemeal as and when we could afford it. Now it's a very comfortable luxurious house with a contemporary interior in a stunning and quiet location. Ideal for relaxation away from it all and yet not too cut off from the cafes, pubs and shops of pretty Chagford.

What makes this house unique

We love the fact that this house is private and secluded yet we are a 5 minute walk away from a 2 Michelin starred hotel when we feel like splashing out. We are close to Chagford, a living village with a wide range of shops. We can walk out on to Dartmoor from our doorstep. We can be at a great Devon beach within an hour. Exeter with it's great shops, cinema's, Roman ruins, museum and restaurants is close by. There is also swift access to the rest of the country via the A30 and the M5 plus a fast 2 hour train to London. Something for everyone!

Wonderfully appointed and perfectly situated

We had a wonderful three days here in January, and despite the season had some wonderful Dartmoor walks straight from the property. Really warm and cosy with log burning fire to relax in front of. Two star Michelin restaurant 5 minutes walk away. What could be better!

A unique find!

Without doubt a unique home! After visiting the pretty village of Chagford and stocking up on local deli produce we made our way through moss covered woodlands and streams to the cottage …what a find!! The cottage and the gardens really are magical, what can I say, we just loved it. The attention to detail was really appreciated and evident throughout and most definitely a real home that is very much loved by the owners. Our friends joined us later that evening to spend the weekend with us and it was great to have so much space to relax, so warm and cosy. We visited Castle Drogo, had a pint at the historic Warren Inn where the fire has been burning since 1845, drove across the moors and enjoyed Sunday lunch at the award winning Rugglestone Inn at Widecombe on the moor, a tiny moorland inn with loads of character and characters…the food is excellent too as are the cute ducks swimming in the little stream just outside. We look forward to returning.

Great facilities, location and standards

The cottage was perfect for a stay in Dartmoor and a celebratory meal at the (very) nearby Gidleigh Park Hotel & Restuarant. The local walks from the door were well described and a pleasure to follow. Decking front and back afforded good sights and sounds (swallows, woodpecker, Perseid meteor shower!) and breakfasts on the patio were a delight. All the facilities that you'd ever need - and more! We particularly enjoyed visiting Tavistock & Plymouth (the latter for the British Firework Championships and the Plymouth Gin Distillery tour - highly recommended) and getting to both the Merrivale Stone Rows and the Scorhill Stone Circle. Chagford we thought somewhat disappointing - although we had an excellent meal at the Three Crowns Inn.

An absolutely stunning property in a quiet location

Exquisitely designed and decorated, the bungalow is a wonderful getaway in beautiful surroundings. The owners pay amazing attention to detail - a lovely very unexpected welcome hamper, lots of information about local walks, many of which are straight from the doorstep and a call to ensure everything was OK. We had mixed weather, but loved each day there. It is also dog friendly and our dogs are now sulking about being back in London! We can't recommend this property high enough and hope very much to return next year.

Delightful 'away from it all' retreat

Excellent holiday cottage in immaculate condition with everything you'd need (except shower gel!), nestled in a quiet, picturesque setting. Great spaces to unwind with a book indoor and out - tastefully decorated by the owners to ensure a relaxing stay. Their welcome pack was also most welcome! Highly recommended.

Car: recommended

There is a huge array of things to do in our area. Here is a selection -


There are many restorative walks from our doorstep into the countryside both along the River Teign that run’s through the Gidleigh Park estate and up on to the moor. Dartmoor has 368 square miles of open countryside with Bronze Age settlements, granite stone circles and rows, craggy tors, wild ponies and wooded mossy river gorges.

Scorhill Bronze Age Stone Circle

Up the lane from Gidleigh on the edge of the moor (easily reached on foot) this is an English Heritage scheduled monument and Devon’s finest stone circle. Walk down to where the River Teign meets the Walla brook and walk over a couple of classic Dartmoor clapper bridges.


Drive into the moor on the B3212 from Mortonhamstead towards Princetown and explore this Bronze Age settlement of a set of 24 hut circles. Evocative spot.


There are two public tennis courts in Chagford.


Non-residents can play a round at the 18 hole course at the Bovey Castle Hotel, a 10 minute drive from Chagford.

Non residents can use the indoor swimming pool, sauna, steam rooms, jacuzzi, gym and tennis courts. The hotel also offers many separate beauty treatments.


Visit the beautifully situated Chagford Swimming Pool, the largest freshwater heated outdoor pool in Devon.

For those after a more private, natural experience go wild swimming in one of the many rivers on Dartmoor. Recommended only during the Summer!

Visit a beach.

The property is situated in Mid Devon equidistant from the huge Northern wild surf beaches and the beautiful Southern sandy coves including Blackpool Sands. Crackington Haven is the closest beach to the house.


Some of the clearest skies in Southern Britain are to be found on Dartmoor.

See which constellations and shooting stars you can spot from the deck.

Exeter, the regional capital.

Visit the regional capital with it’s famous cathedral, museum and Roman ruins. Sample the many shops and restaurants and if you are in the mood take in a drink or meal and a film at the Picturehouse.

Castle Drogo. England’s most recently constructed castle. Walk out from it’s spectacular gardens along the Hunters Path and Fingle Gorge.

Drop into Dartmoor Prison.

This eerie place situated in the middle of Dartmoor has a museum featuring macabre weapons and prisoners’ escape gear.

Follow the Warhorse trail.

Stephen Spielberg’s blockbuster was filmed on Dartmoor at key Dartmoor beauty spots including Haytor, Warren House Inn and Cadover Bridge. You can also go riding on Dartmoor yourself on a horse from the Babeny Farm Stables in Poundsgate.

Go Antiqueing and shopping for local products

Ashburton and Topsham are great spots for antiques and Dartington has a fantastic selection of shops including an outlet for the sale of the famous Dartington glass.

Visit a Devon Vineyard and the surrounding area.

The beautiful Sharpham vineyard overlooking the Dart valley in the South Hams is well worth a visit for a cheese and wine tasting. The crime writer Agatha Christie’s home, Greenway, now a National Trust property open to the public, is a little further down the river. Totnes, an interesting and attractive “alternative” town with it’s own currency is further upstream.

Eating out .

Devon offers some of the finest seafood, meat and vegetables in Britain. There are countless restaurants to visit on our doorstep and further afield. Some of our favourites include –

Gidleigh Park Hotel – 2 Michelin Star Excellence in stunning surroundings voted the UK’s number one restaurant by the Sunday Times Food List 2014.

The Chagford Inn – Good food pub in Chagford, one that consistently uses local suppliers.

Endsleigh Hotel, Milton Abbot – Classic English afternoon tea in a stunning Grade 1 listed building.

Rock Fish Grill, Dartmouth - Classic Fish and Chips situated in this beautiful harbour town.

River Exe Café - Unique floating restaurant in the middle of the estuary serving seafood dropped off by passing fishing boats.

Riverford Field Kitchen – Located at the farm that is home to the famous organic veg box scheme. Great communal eating experience.

The Horse, Mortonhamstead – Great pizza, tapas and other classics.
