Why Fred & Lisa Day-Lewis chose Eastern Connecticut

The house, a unique A-frame in the quiet northeast corner. is tucked away enough to enjoy the tranquility and seclusion of the country, but not so far off the beaten track that you can't also enjoy antiquing, wine tours and kids activities within 20-30 minutes.

What makes this house unique

The house in situated in northeastern Connecticut, which is a beautifully scenic and peaceful part of New England. The area is flush with farms, and you almost feel like you are stepping back in time while driving along the country roads here. There are several small lakes in the area, most of which are for residents, so they do not get busy or touristy. Find and like us on Facebook to follow lake house news!

very clean, great layout, many activities

  • 5 of 5

this was an awesome rental, i highly recommend this place for anyone looking for a relaxing weekend. the house has a great open layout, very clean, well stocked and the nest thermostat is awesome. fred and lisa were very friendly, informative and responded to all my requests. the lake is beautiful and there is great seating there with a place for a fire. i do not have a single complaint about my stay and the person with the negative nitpicky review that was left recently....you're terrible lol. if this house does not sell i will def be renting it again!

Better Options Available

  • 2 of 5

The lake is quiet and peaceful, perfect for kayaking. Very quiet area -- I think no more than 6 or 7 cars passed by all week, most of them workmen. The house, however, is not optimally set up. Three spiral staircases, with no option. Not good for kids or anybody not good with stairs. Bedrooms downstairs smelled musty. Large eating table is downstairs, so if you have more than 4 people you have to carry the food down the stairs, and then sit next to the noisy air conditioner. Most importantly, renters seem tolerated vice welcomed. When I asked about remote parking beyond allowed 2 cars it was suggested that "perhaps I was inviting too many guests." Also a bit of a "bait & switch." Originally advertised for 8 people (and showing twin beds) then changed to 6 by the time we arrived. Three double beds so as 4 singles we were left using the sofa. Also, the (11 page) rental agreement stated the house was rented to 5 people. However, I was charged for an extra person, though on what basis was unclear. I suspect the rationale related to me asking about additional parking because I was having a birthday luncheon for 6 people on the weekend (for the day). I rented a house in Ireland in June and the owners were spectacular. This experience was the opposite. While we managed to have a good time, I would not recommend it to others.

Owner's Response: Joan, I appreciate your feedback on the house. However, as I mentioned in the voicemail I left on your phone this morning, I greatly would have appreciated you reaching out to me at any point during your stay to address your concerns. My property is a unique one and that is partly why I have so many pictures representing it in my listing that show features sure as the spiral staircase. Though you found it inconvenient, many other guests love it for it's style. Our bedrooms downstairs, like many, will smell musty if the windows are close for long periods of time and people are using A/C, but when that happens I have a dehumidifier available for guests that I would have been happy to direct you to if I had known. Opening the windows and turning off the A/C also would have helped. As for the outside eating table being on the lower deck, though it may seem inconvenient, it is for the safety and comfort of our guests that we have it there, for on windy days the upper deck can be quite windy. We also prefer to leave the upper deck uncluttered so as not to obstruct the lake views. Because of the serene and peaceful environment you observed on the lake, I am wary of having large parties in the home that ask about "overflow parking," and do make it a point to stress that parties are not allowed. I do apologize if you took that as an accusation, but as a home owner, I would rather get information about an event ahead of time then find something going on in the house and have to inconvenience guests and have them moving cars around. We do advertise in the listing that there are only two parking spots available. And I do encourage you to look at your reservation through VRBO, you did indeed book for 5 people, and I charge an extra $20 for persons over 4, so that is what VRBO charged you. There was no error in the charges to you. I also hope that the person who slept on the "couch" pulled out the bed that was inside it, and that they slept comfortably. Though the pictures of the rooms are outdated (and scheduled to be re-photographed), the details in the listing accurately describe the layout of the bedrooms. We do still have an occupancy of 8. Joan I do recommend that you become more familiar with VRBO and read fully the listing and contract (not the sample agreement available when you book, the one that is personalized for you), before booking another property. Then perhaps you will have a more enjoyable experience in the future! Take care, Lisa

Home away from Home

  • 5 of 5

Our family thoroughly enjoyed this vacation property. The house is very well appointed and very clean. We ate in every night, and have to say that other than the food we brought with us, the house provided all the other necessities (pans, dishes, and much more). The lake water was very warm and the boys used the kayaks every day, and all the other floats.

We treated this property with respect and were more than willing to leave it in the same condition it was when we arrived. Thank you Fred and Lisa.
