Le Padouen - a charming 17th century gascon farmhouse gite with a beautiful pool

Bedrooms 5
Property type farmhouse
Minimum Stay 7 nights

Photos and Description of this 5 bedroom holiday farmhouse in Hautes-Pyrenees - Le Padouen

Relax in this small village next to the church square with views of the Pyrenees

Le Padouen is a 17th century gascon farmhouse situated in a village next to the church square between Castelnau-Magnoac and the Pyrénées.

The house is arranged around a grass courtyard with vines growing around the windows and views over the surrounding hillside.

A large grassed rear garden sets off a private swimming pool. There is also a children's area with a trampoline. 60 acres of communal woodland can also be found to the rear of the property, where you can enjoy stunning walks following public paths along the canal with fantastic views of the Pyrenees.

And there is plenty to do once you've recharged your batteries… riding, cycling, walking in the mountains, a great childrens park to enjoy a poney, toboggan or pedalo ride. This park also includes a bouncy castle and merry-go- round, crazy golf, ice-cream stand and cafe.

There are two lakes near by, one has a sandy shore and swimming facilites again with cafe and pedalos. You could take a visit to our caves or the shrine at Lourdes. And of course in the winter there is skiing.

Activities: The Hautes Pyrénées offers more than just 'high mountains'. Le Padouen is set on the edge of the plains which stretch towards Toulouse and at the foot of the hills which climb gradually up towards Spain.

This diverse region has attracted travellers for hundreds of years and the wealth of activities available locally is tribute to the burgeoning industry catering to those 'in the know'.

For the following activities, just contact me on reservation for help booking with the organisers:

• River fishing at Le Vivier in Lannemezan (15 mins away)...

• Fly light aircraft. For a fantastic view of the Pyrénées, our neighbour offers trips in a microlight aircraft (see www.samyulm.com).

•Walking through peaceful valleys, following the ‘routes de la résistance’ through to Spain, taking in medieval hill forts, with nothing to hear but the jingle of cow bells.

Whether it is boating at the nearby Lac d'Astarac, climbing or rafting in the mountains, the Hautes Pyrénées offers all the peace and tranquillity of ‘le temps perdu’.

You can explore caves (‘grottes’, like the Gouffre de l’Espaross, pictured right) with prehistoric cave paintings or take a boat trip through les Grottes de Medous and swims in cooling mountain lakes watching the eagles and other wild birds of prey.

Other local attractions include:

• le Pic du Midi (alt. 2877) – visible from the village and accessed by cable car – offers fantastic views from the summit, an astronomy observatory, shop and restaurant.

• Lourdes with the shrine to Bernadette is under l hr away. While there take the funicular to the Pic de Jer, again with spectacular views.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Superb holiday, what a clean, well maintained property, all the facilities you need with oddles of charm and character. Le Padouen stands in a beautiful, safe courtyard where we would sunbathe and read when the little ones allowed us to! To the rear of the property there was a lovely clean pool with a padlocked gate and fence around - very important for us with two little ones.

The owners who live next door were always there to help and answer any questions we had on the area, they were so friendly but unobtrusive.

There was also lots to do in this stunning area of france, we visited a great childrens park just up the road with poney abd pedalo rides.

Thanks again for a great find.

Myself, husband and large family have stayed at so many holiday homes in France and this one so far was the best! The house itself was amazing, as was the pool and large gardens; beautiful area for evening strolls! We also loved sitting in the garden in the evenings; very relaxing! The owners were very nice and helpful! Overall a wonderful property which I'd highly recommend to others. Annie Bill, and family.....

1 semaine au padouen

  • 4 of 5

The Jones Family 2014

The Jones Feb 2014

Wow, my family and our friend’s family all stayed at Le Padouen over the winter holidays. We were the first two families to enjoy the whole of this wonderful, private, spacious and excellently equipped home. The owners who lived in one half before have now moved and created this amazing house. We each had our own space with separate kitchens and sitting rooms if needed, but we felt we were all together. The children loved all the rooms and the entertainment of English television, DVDs, books, board games and the large baby foot table that resulted in many evening of football competitions.

The space outside was also very much enjoyed, the beautiful courtyard at the front of the property was where we caught many sun -rays, in February can you believe!! If only we could stay in the summer to enjoy the pretty swimming pool area and rear gardens. However we did mange to take in the woodland walks to the rear of the house, which we would thoroughly recommend. The views of the snow capped Pyrenees were breath taking and within 45 minutes we were in great ski restores, these we found very family friendly and well priced. We would recommend this area and home to any family wanting home comforts and a little French luxury.

nice french countryside house

  • 5 of 5

The Padouen is a very nice house with lovely decoration.

The pool is very private, even if it is in the owners garden.

The owner who we didn't see much of, or hear… just when we needed them…

The garden very well maintained and cool in the evening.

What a little find...

  • 5 of 5

We are a family of five with 3 young girls. The house was spot on for what we wanted for a week in the region, with the three girls in one bedroom while we had the other side of the house. The grassed garden by the house and the pool at the rear gave us all the space we needed for running around and laying in the sunshine. The location is good to reach the mountains and local shops, while there is a very good young child's fun park about 15mins away by car as well as caves and spa resorts a bit beyond that.

The owners, Chris and Lucy, are very friendly and really make you feel most welcome. Overall, we had a great time there and would recommend it for others with young families.

A lovely holiday

  • 5 of 5

A lovely gite full of the charm, I stayed there last summer in mid august with my partner and daughter, we had a great time. The gite is well kept and very clean with a grassed courtyard where we spent many evenings watching the bats flying around. Lucy and her family were great hosts, never intruding but always available if you needed any advice/help/rcommendations for a day out. The swimming pool although unheated is a joy to swim in and was always kept clean. i wouldn't hestatate recommending this gite to anyone.

The nearest town is Castelnau-Magnoac, about five miles away, with its market square – and very good Saturday market with local produce – stone and colombage architecture, one traditional french restaurant, two pizzerias, bank, super- market, boulangeries and patisseries, boucherie, three bars and a lake that has a beautiful pathed walk with a childrens assault course . A little further in the other direction is the much larger town of Lannemezan.

For skiers (November-March), and from this year snow scooters, the Val de Louron resorts such as Saint Lary-Soulan are easily accessible in around 50 minutes. If you would like a day out to the coast, the Atlantic and the Mediterranean coasts are a two-hour drive away.

There are many restaurants and auberges in the local area serving fresh produce using only ingredients produced on the farm – especially ‘confit’ and ‘magret de canard’, foie gras and cassoulet – at prices from the past in the UK. The food and fresh produce is wonderful.

Golf: Lannemezan golf club, an 18 hole course open all year round, with a restaurant, a pro shop, beginner and advanced lessons from the resident pro Monsieur S. Imbertie (15 mins away).

Ski: • In the winter months, of course, the ski resort of Saint Lary-Soulan offers superb skiing and great apès-ski! (45 mins away).
