About the property

Beautiful & spacious, 4 large bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, enclosed pool & garden

This spacious four bedroom traditional Beaujolais house, set among the Beaujolais vineyards, has exclusive use of a pool which averages 24-29°C, cottage garden and shady courtyard with roses around the door.

The house was originally built over the wine cellars, adjacent to the owners home, to accommodate the 'vigneron' (wine maker) who tended the property's vineyard and wine making. Our wine is no longer made on the property, and the old press room, 6 x 7m, has been converted to create a ground level kitchen, dining and sitting room with French windows opening out onto the court yard and out door dining area. There's also a log burner making this a cosy holiday let for the Beaujolais Nouveau week in November, Christmas or New Year.

The house, which has all modern comforts, offers wonderful panoramic views of the Beaujolais hills from every window, and the garden opens out onto the vineyards with views as far as the Mont Blanc. The style is traditional, with the charm only authentic antique furnishings could bring.

The property has three acres of gamay vines which were previously tended by the owners who produced a Beaujolais Villages and is now managed by a producer of organic 'vin naturel'.

The pool is open during peak and mid season, closing for low season.

Kitchen - fully equipped including dishwasher, washing machine/tumble dryer, microwave, toaster, electric kettle, coffee machine, fridge/freezer and iron. The adjacent dining/sitting room area has TV satelite and BBC channels.

Bedroom 1 - main double room (blue)

Bedroom 2 - triple room (yellow) plus cot, ideal for a family. This room communicates with bedroom 1.

Bedroom 3 - has both a double and twin beds (green).

Bedroom 4 - has a double bed (red) and private bathroom.

All beds are extra wide and each room has air-conditioning.

Pool is 10 x 5 meters with Roman steps for easy access. exclusive use and averages 26-29°C.

Garden and court yard have various choices of shaded seating and sunbathing areas with cushions, large shady Gazebo etc.

Bed linen, bath towels, pool towels are included - all cotton. All household products and a welcome pack of breakfast items are offered.

The owners invite you for a wine tasting at your convenience. Dinner can be provided on request.

The village baker’s, butcher’s, and supermarket are open Sunday morning for getting in supplies, as is Villefranche fresh produce market. So you need only pack your personal items – don’t forget the flip flops!

There is ping-pong, basket ball, a book case, box games and a toy box. 4 adult and 2 teenage mountain bikes, plus swings and various pedal toys for younger ones.

Restaurant and shops at walking distance, less than 1km - on the flat!

The pool is open during mid and peak season, closing from end September until the following April, depending on the weather.

Why Briar & Michel chose Saint-Étienne-des-Oullières

There was no hesitation in choosing this property due to it's location, light airy rooms and wonderful panoramic views of the beautiful region of Beaujolais. We have loved the joint creative project of transforming this once neglected property with great potential and turning it into the bijou that it has become with our own hands.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Being wine lovers we also loved tending the vineyard and participating in the production of our own wine - we have now handed over this job to a producer of organic natural wine. 100% rural setting while at close proximity to the beautiful cities of Macon and Lyon which are abound with culture. The perfect location!

Our family of four (2 kids 8 and 10) had a wonderful time at this house. Our hosts were available to assist and advise, but never in the way. The kids loved all the room and facilities - table tennis, basketball, soccer (with a grassy area and net set amongst the vines), boules, badminton and of course the heated pool.The property is surrounded by vineyards and is just a short walk to the village. I enjoyed the 10 minute walk every morning to grab fresh croissants and a baguette.

The house itself is a converted wine press area that still has lots of the original fittings and reused wood. It had terrific indoor spaces including a range of bedrooms that meant we could all spread out when we needed to! I expect that a much larger group could fit in this large house. The outdoor spaces were great too, and as the weather improved we enjoyed eating outside.

Michel took great delight in showing us the cellar and allowing us to taste a few vintages of his wonderful Beaujoulais village wine. in the surrounding areas, and Briar has compiled compendiums of information, brochures and suggested itineraries. We followed a number of these suggestions and were never steered wrongly.

We would consider staying here again if we get the chance to return to this part of France, and have no hesitation in recommending it to others.

There's a bathroom with overhead shower on the landing with a wall heater and a third shower room at ground level which is handy for pre/post pool changing & showering. Hair dryers and both bath and pool towels are provided.

  • All rooms are charmingly furnished with extra wide beds plus seating. Air-conditioning or central heating. Cotton sheets and various quilt options available. Spacious and peaceful with windows opening onto lovely views of the property and vineyards. The blue room is very pretty and calm with a window over looking the court yard and garden. The yellow room is ideal for children and is accessed via the blue room (with a door in between) making these two rooms perfect for a family with young children. It has three extra wide single beds (so a good size for adults too) plus a cot with cot sheets and quilts. There are lots of children's books and toys for young ones in this room. The green room is accessed via a second short stair case and has both a double and twin beds, always popular with teenagers who like their privacy. The red room has an ensuite bathroom and closed off corridor making it also quite private - beautiful views to east and west of garden and vineyar

This beautiful holiday let is a converted wine maker's house set among the scenic Beaujolais vineyards which produce red wine from gamay vines. The owners are on site but out of sight! There to ensure everything is always in working order and available should you need help or advice. The property perfectly suits family gatherings, young families, active groups, those looking for gastronomy and culture, and those wanting to simply get away from it all!

A Wonderfull stay !

a fantastically relaxing holiday at " la fleur de bruyere", not a holiday rental, a home from home!

the facilities are outstanding, pool is fab, the house is beautiful and well furnished and the decor well thought of, the gardens and courtyard are great too but it is more the extra touches provided by Briar and Michel that make this place so special.

everything you may need is there, from kitchen utensils to condiments, WIFI that actually works and the choice to watch UK channels or improve your French watching local TV.

All the linen, even pool towels are there, if you need anything just ask Michel or Briar and they are more than happy to help.

Bikes, toys for kids, pooltoys and barbecue with charcoal and lighters!

all you would need is there, in fact, we got to the house Saturday morning and were allowed in early so just went food shopping in the nearby town of belleville, dropped the food in the big kitchen and then relaxed for a week!

Numerous members of my family joined us during our stay enjoying the pool and late lunch in the shade of the chestnut tree, all commented on how Wonderfull the house was.

we stayed with our dog Lola who was also welcomed, the entire gardens and pool are secured making things easy.

Biar and Michel made us feel so welcome and are a wealth of knowledge on what to do and where to go in the region.

All in all a fantastic holiday away from the crowds, surrounded by vineyards and beautiful views of the collines du Beaujolais.

Would we go back again? Absolutely.

Owner's Response: We're so glad you appreciated our efforts at making your stay as comfortable as possible! We were pleased to be able to give you the keys to the property early as we did not have a changeover that day, therefore the house was ready in advance. It's not often we can do this, as during summer we usually have out going guests, meaning we need quite a few hours to get everything tip-top for the incoming guests. It's always worth asking though, as you wisely did, in advance! ;-)

Great house, great pool, great hosts

The house is a lovely converted barn attached to Briar and Michel's house but very private with its own courtyard. BBQ, table tennis, bikes, children's tractors are all available. The pool is heated, clean and with a useful shallow end and steps for little children. The house is large and well laid out with big bedrooms and all the thoughtful pieces which make a stay stress-free. The area is beautiful and was wonderfully hot (30 degrees C in Aug) with lots to do. Town is a short walk away so is convenient for morning croissants. Briar and Michel are very good, kind and discrete hosts (English and French spoken fluently). Thank you!!

Absolutely wonderful

An outstanding property in a beautiful rural area. It's perfect for those who enjoy walking and cycling, visiting vineyards, eating good food and of course lounging by the pool.

The owners Briar and Michel go out of their way to make you welcome and feel at home.

The property is very clean and well presented in a lovely old characteristic farmhouse on the outskirts of a rural village with good shops to wander up to buy the morning croissants and baguette. The grounds are delightful with some stunning views towards Mount Blanc.

There are plenty of bicycles at the property for guests to borrow at no cost, which allow you to explore the beautiful scenery via some well marked cycle routes. There are also plenty of marked walking trails in the area that take you into the heart of the Beaujolais often passing through the vineyards.

There are some lovely picturesque villages nearby with plenty of options for somewhere to eat.

I would definitely recommend this property, especially if you like the outdoor active lifestyle and, yes, we will go back.

Fantastic family holiday

We have stayed at this Gite several times over the years and it is perfect for families of all ages. The Gite is beautifully furnished, very comfortable and equipped with everything we could possibly need. The pool is lovely and the pool area is quiet and sheltered. The surrounding Beaujolais countryside is stunning with beautifully kept vineyards giving way to the higher forested, hillsides of the Haut Beaujolais. I am a keen cyclist and take my bike with me. There are many fantastic cycle tours for all abilities with cycle paths and very quiet roads with also some challenging hill climbs for those that are more adventurous. As well a cycling the area is great for hiking, visiting chateaus, within easy reach of Lyon and of course the wine tasting. Briar the host is extremely welcoming and has thought of the smallest details to make our holiday a success, her husband Michelle is charming and always keen to have an "aperitif". I could not recommend this accommodation more highly.

Great place to stay, relax and explore Beaujolais!

We had a really great time staying at this great gite in St Etienne des Oulliere. The Gite is very comfortable and perfect if you want to relax and have lazy days by the pool. The garden is very well looked after and the pool is so nice to cool off in. We loved barbequing in the garden in the evening and also star gazing at night. The gite is very spacious and has all of the home comforts that you could possibly want. We made good use of the table tennis, games and gazebo.

We also managed to explore the hills on mountain bikes and would really recommend this area for keen cyclists. There are plenty of GR routes and tracks to explore as well as great road routes.

Briar and Michel also make you very welcome and are very helpful and knowledgeable about local places to visit and local food and drink. We had a great time and will definitely come back!

Séjour très agréable sur un magnifique site

Michel et Briar sont des hôtes vraiment très sympathiques et accueillants.

Le gîte est très bien entretenu, très propre et très bien équipé : rien n'y manque !

Le jardin, magnifique, fleuri et très bien agencé, permet d'en profiter à tout moment de la journée.

On a tous profité de la piscine, des chaises longues...

Bref, un séjour parfait chez des hôtes parfaits.... et avec un vin très agréable à boire !!

The property is set among vineyards with 360° of open views of the Beaujolais hills and valleys. Less than a kilometer's walk to the village, through the vines on the flat, you will find bakers, butchers, mini supermarket, pizza take away, PO and much more. The restaurant serves both chic & bar food, with an out door shady terrace with children's play area. 10 minutes to large supermarket, 15 to the covered fresh produce market and high street shops in Villefranche.

Horse-riding - 5 minutes drive - take the kids for a test ride!

Go-karting - 8 minutes

Golf - 30 minutes drive. There are various golf clubs of varying size - check out the internet sites for Golf de Beaujolais, & others between Lyon and Macon.

Tennis - 5 minutes - You could either drive or borrow a bike to get there. There are other options further away.

Leisure water park - 15 minutes - slides and tunnels, jacouzy, bubble and whirl pool etc - for all ages.

Tarzan style tree park 10 minutes - This will encourage the teenagers to get out of bed in the morning! With secure harnessing they can climb to great heights and swing through the trees with a variety of different challenges. Parents may want to join in too! There's also a younger/shorter childs' version nearer to the ground and also a mini version for toddlers within arms reach of their parents. If this gets them shouting for more there's another park of the same sort 30 minutes away.

Fishing - 15 minutes - on the banks of the Saone river - day passes can be bought at the café where lunch could then be enjoyed with a plate of frogs legs or white bait.

Lake des Sapins - 40 minutes - peddalos, beach, boats etc.

Flight tours - 15 minutes - local airfield - fly over your holiday home and take snaps from above!

Hiking and Mountain Biking - The Beaujolais is made for this, being totally open with very few fences and walls - we have bikes and maps for your use.

Escape Games - 20 minutes.

Wine tasting visits to private cellars and co-operatives.

The property, boardering with the Crus Brouilly, has its own Beaujolais Villages from previous years in the wine-cellar and now produces a red 'Vin naturel'. A tour of tasting in wine cellars can be compilmented by a visit to Georges Du Beouf at Romaneche Torrins, where everyone will find something new in the world of wine, with interactive activities for children and tastings for adults. Or the more traditional Beaujolais museum in the capital of the Beaujolais, Beaujeu. The famous reds of the Valley de Rhone, south of Lyon, and the lovely white wines of the Macon area should complete your selection for your wine cellar perfectly.

Winding through the villages of the beautiful Beaujolais hills you will find wine cellars where the producers welcome you for wine tastings, and terraces to chill and taste the local produce, such as that of Chiroubles with it's amazing panoramic view.

The Hameau de Vin, near to Fleurie, will entertain the family for a day, amusing and educating all generations on the world of wine in an original, interactive and entertaining way.

For culture there are chateaux e.g. 'Chateau de Flecher' which is particularly interesting for those with an interest in interiors plus 'Chaueau Cours Martin' boasts the most impressive gardens of the region - take a picnic! There is the historic medieval town of Perouges and the Villars les Dombes Bird Park, both in an area of lakes and wetlands abound with wild life - a great family day out. Touro Zoo with its aqua park and the very impressive Eagles and Wolves Park will please the children. The area also has many religious pilgrimage sites such as Cluny, Taizé and Pary Le Monial.

Fans of Gabriel Chevallier's 'Clochmerle' will love visiting the neighbouring village of Veux and the 'pissotières'!

Lyon - the 2nd largest city and gastronomic centre of France, is beautiful and rich in culture and arcitecture, only 30 minutes drive to the centre, or 20 by train - Certain streets consist only of wonderful restaurants competing to entice.

The elagant town of Macon, situated on the bank of the river Soane, is 40 minutes away where you'll find great outdoor eating with a view of the Saone, antiques shops and quiet high street shopping. The town is surrounded by beautiful villages and vineyards.
