About Caroline Riddle

The above is me with Kellie Holmes! This was taken at the gym I go to in Tunbridge Wells where I currently live. I grew up in Wareham and went to the now defunct Swanage Grammar school. I moved to Kent for my career in policing. I spent 30 happy years as a police officer reaching the rank of Detective Inspector (it's not like it is portrayed in the TV by the way!). I retired in 2009 and spent some time travelling and trying to learn Spanish (not very successfully). I am lucky and have been all over the world but my heart lies in Dorset. I think it is the most wonderful place with amazing scenery and a fantastic history dating back thousands of years.

Caroline Riddle purchased this cottage in 2015

Why Caroline Riddle chose Wareham

I have known this property most of my life. It is a wonderful cottage which is ideally located within the Walls. The property has so much character and is I. the centre of this small market town. There was a Great Fire of Wareham in 1762 which is well documented. There is a reference to s few houses in Howards Lane surviving the fire this cottage is one of them so it is seeped in history. The property itself as is surprisingly large on the inside with a large kitchen diner, separate living room and two large double bedrooms.

What makes this cottage unique

As soon as I saw this cottage was for sale I knew I wanted to buy it. I have known it from the outside most of my life and have been fascinated by its quaint small door and and lovely old appearance. Inside there are beams everywhere which is amazing. The property had been modernised in the 1970,s by the look of the decor (avocado bathroom downstairs) but I could see with some imagination it could be brought back to life but keep its character. As a listed building we obviously had responsibilities both legally and ethically to maintain. We installed a shower room with WC upstairs for modern living as well as removing all traces of avocado from both the bathroom downstairs and the kitchen.

Overall very good

  • 3 of 5

Well equipped, well situated in centre of Wareham, parking close by, many places of interest within easy reach. Could have been cleaner, loose toilet seat in upstairs shower room.

Wonderful Cottage

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful find. The cottage is deceptively bigger than it looks from the outside. Two very good sized bedrooms, two shower/wc rooms, one up one downstairs, a fully equipped kitchen and a very good sized lounge. The bedding was fresh and the beds really comfortable. The parking is directly behind the cottage and we had no trouble parking a second car less than 2 minutes from the property. There is plenty of places to eat and drink within a stones throw. The owner was so kind with recommendations and info. Highly, highly recommend.

Brilliant location

  • 4 of 5

Really characterful, spacious cottage - the pictures don't do it justice. A brilliant location, right in the middle of town but not in any way noisy, particularly after dark. Everything is on your doorstep, including the free parking. The double bed is incredibly comfortable and that room is very quiet.

Downsides: didn't feel especially clean when we arrived and it took a bit to get the place warm (although this was mid-Feb).

Overall: a brilliant place to stay in a lovely Dorset town at a price you won't find too often in this county... Recommended!
