Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday cottage in Gordonsville - Shade Tree Cottage

Country Cottag, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Sleeping Loft with twins, 1 New Bathroom, Sleeps 6

Shade Tree cottage is a comfortable cottage located on a 22 acre farm in Historic Gordonsville, VA. Convenient to Keswick, UVA, Charlottesville, Barboursville, Wolftrap Farm Weddings, Castle Hill Cidery Weddings, Monticello and Montpelier. The Cottage is excellent for family get togethers, wedding guests who want an affordable, convenient and comfortable place to relax, and just a great place to wind down after the many historic activities and wine venues in the area. Nestled under 100+ year old trees on a shady knoll there's always a breeze from the Southwest Mountains here in the Piedmont region of Virginia. Birds galore call Shade Tree Cottage home and know that their feeders are always full and close by. Rabbits and deer also visit regularly and our resident ground hog can be spotted sunning himself in the pasture. Don't be surprised if the chickens come see you in the afternoon, they like to scratch around the bird feeders.

The Cottage has 2 Bedrooms, one with Queen bed and the other is a Double Bed (new) and a comfortable pull out sofa for extra sleeping options. With a sitting area this second bedroom doubles as a light filled side room for reading or lounging. An awesome sleeping loft (low ceiling) with comfy twin beds is overlooking the great room. A brand new bathroom with shower is located just off the main bedroom.

The large country kitchen is fully equipped and has a French door opening to the deck, which is great for morning coffee overlooking the pasture.

Laundry room is off the kitchen with stacked washer and dryer units.

Wireless Internet (booster from main house), TV, and strong Verizon cell signal.

If you need more space," The Little House" at Shade Tree Cottage may also be available for booking. It is located near the Cottage, has one queen bedroom, new bath, living room and eating area overlooking the covered porch and pasture.

About Midge

Hello Tom and Midge here. We bought the farm in Gordonsville as a second home and to be close to our horses. Tom (a Richmond, VA city boy) loved the farm and Cottage so much that he didn't want to go home after spending weekends in Gordonsville, so we moved here in 2000. After retirement, we no longer have the Tennessee Walking horses, we built another house on the farm, and now our guests get to stay in the beautiful Shade Tree Cottage. Tom's new passion is raising chickens, so you will have farm fresh eggs during your visit.

Midge purchased this cottage in 2000

Why Midge chose Virginia

Gordonsville is a beautiful small town, a train goes over an overpass right in the middle of main street, the shops are busy and Restaurant Pomme is spectacular! Shade Tree Cottage is situated on a 5 acre knoll on the 22 acre farm. 100+ year old shade trees keep it cool in the summer and lots of squirrels, rabbits and deer call it home year round.

What makes this cottage unique

The Cottage is very private, but close to everything! UVA, Monticello, Montpelier, Wintergreen ski resort, award winning wineries, Civil War Museum and historic battlegrounds. Lots of local activities like horseback riding, apple and peach orchards, antiquing and farm visits. Did I mention that we are very close to lots of wedding venues; Wolftrap farm, Keswick Vineyards, Keswick Hall, Castle Hill Cidery, Barboursville Vineyards, Horton Vineyards, and at least 10 churches within 10 miles including the Historic Grace Episcopal? Shade Tree Cottage is perfect for the Bride/Groom's siblings and family to socialize in a private, affordable, comfortable and convenient place. If you need more space ask about the "Little House", a one bedroom cottage on the same property. Great for parents or grandparents or a couple with a baby.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Loved the really nice cottage in Gordonsville. It was an excellent Charlottesville location for all the sights and wineries that we wanted to see. Shade Tree Cottage was perfect, kitchen well equipped for just about anything we wanted to cook! The deck was used every morning to watch the wildlife while having coffee. Everything was great and so comfortable! Will be back.

Cozy cottage! Perfect for a weekend getaway.

  • 5 of 5

My girlfriends and I went to the cottage for a girls weekend away for it all and it was the perfect setting! Midge aND Tom were the perfect hosts making sure our stay was perfect and the farm fresh eggs were an enjoyable touch for our cozy morning breakfasts on the porch. The cottage was also close to the main town and lots of the local wineries! I would highly recommend staying here and we can't wait to return next time for hopefully an even longer relaxing stay!

We loved the cottage, and the surrounding property.

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is cozy and comfortable. Everything was clean and in good working order. The host was great, leaving fresh eggs from her chickens, along with bacon and English muffins. This is not a five star property, but it doesn't pretend to be. It is exactly what is listed, and that is refreshing, and so is the property

Where do you live?

Relaxing, convenient and epitomy of southern hospitality

  • 5 of 5

Shade Tree Cottage was the perfect place for our stay in Gordonsville. This quaint cottage had everything we needed. Our Golden Retriever loved being able to roam in the yard surrounding the cottage and chased a couple of squirrels, which she loves to do. The cottage was well equipped, clean and beds comfortable. We had 15 to 20 people over who were there from out of town for the wedding at Wolf Trap and the Dreelin's were very agreeable to that which we gratefully appreciated. Our guests loved the place. Upon arrival the fridge was filled with eggs, bacon, milk, English muffins and cheese. The kitchen was very well stocked with the little things one always needs. They had current magazines to read, plenty of brochures of places of interest and nearby restaurants. We have rented places all over the world from villas in Italy to penthouses in Mijas, Spain and this cottage was the best equipped by far not to mention the sweetest southern hospitality from Midge! Thank you Midge and Tom!

Needs some TLC

  • 3 of 5

Pros- Midge was very nice and helpful. The cottage was decorated nicely. Breakfast items were much appreciated for the next morning as we arrived later in the afternoon. There was charcoal and lighter fluid for the grill. The bathroom was small but newly remodeled. The AC worked well.

Cons- I was very disappointed in the appearance of the landscaping. It was weedy and overgrown. There was poison ivy in the side yard. The small porch had not been swept and the flowers in the pots were dead. The house itself smelled musty. There were dead bugs in the window sills and the refrigerator was dirty. We had to use bottled water because the water tasted of iron. It could be possible it is well water and couldn't be helped, but it would have been nice to know before we arrived.

While it was not so bad we had to leave, I was embarrassed because we had brought other family members with us and we were all expecting better. With a little more care it could be a lovely place to stay. As it is now, I would not recommend it to a friend.

Owner's Response: Oh my, I am so sorry. We have had 3 weeks of 95+ degree days with no let up. My Cottage Garden is beautiful in the Spring and Summer , but going into Aug the heat did them in. I found the Poison Ivy sprigs near the ferns, that's gone now, thank you. I have replaced those 2 planters and I have trimmed the roses near the front porch. I will inspect the house personally after each cleaning, obviously some things were overlooked. As far as the well water, we are in the country all around Charlottesville and Gordonsville. I've never had a complaint, water from different regions tastes slightly different. Again, I am truly sorry that your experience wasn't wonderful. I strive to provide a pleasant stay away from home for my guests. I'm deeply saddened that I disappointed you.

A Perfectly Peaceful Getaway

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was a perfect location for a few days of restful, fun, much needed family time. Two adults and three grown children were very comfortable. The cottage was well stocked with everything you could possibly need. Midge is a wonderfully responsive host. Tom was very generous with his time as we wanted to know so much about their chickens, the property, and the area. I can not think of anything that could have made our stay more perfect! I highly recommend the cottage and will definitely keep it on my list to stay again when we are in the area.

Charming cottage in a beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was just as described. We enjoyed our stay very much. It was so helpful to have everything we needed for breakfast, especially the fresh eggs. We were there for an unseasonably cold weekend and were very cozy. The loft room is best for guests who do not need to get up during the night. It worked well for our group. Children will love it! Thank you very much to Midge for a lovely place to stay.
