Minshall’s Garden is a loving “nod” to honor the memory of our Mother, Christine Koblegard Minshall Haynes, who was a great lover of all things “Florida” and something of a walking encyclopedia on the subject. During her 92 years, from 1919 to 2012, she witnessed a great many things, from her childhood years in Fort Pierce, on the east coast, to her final years in Boca Grande, on the west coast, which she generously shared with her family.

Minshall's Garden is located in Englewood, Florida, which is on the Gulf of Mexico on Florida's southwest coast between Sarasota and Fort Myers. This classic Florida home is located in the older section of Englewood, echoing the Florida of an earlier era. Only 450 feet from Lemon Bay (named for the vast lemon groves which lined its shores), Minshall's Garden is conveniently close to all the amenities (1-15 minutes away from multiple Gulf beaches, fine-dining restaurants, multiple state parks, nature preserves, walking & biking trails, boat tours, fishing trips, etc.), while preserving within its fenced bounds a very private and intimate space.

Minshall's Garden is truly a 4-season destination, with its lush tropical plantings, heated pool and multiple outside gathering spaces, including the: large covered cabaña with overhead fan, dining table and seating area; lattice shade house with tropical plantings, pond and waterfall; outside shower/changing room with seating; large screened/covered lanai with 2 overhead fans and dining table; screened pool deck circled by Brown Jordan loungers and seating; raised deck adjacent to the home's Sun Room; and, front alcove porch. The almost constant, gentle Gulf breeze adds the finishing touch.

The causeway to beautiful Manasota Key is 1 minute from the property. Once on Manasota Key, there are three major county park beaches at the north, middle and south end of the Key, as well as Stump Pass State Park (5 minutes away), which, at the very south end of the Key, offers absolutely stunning views and access to the bay, the pass and the Gulf. Our closest beach, Englewood Beach, 3 minutes away, is adjacent to several interesting shops and good restaurants.

To the south, it is only 15 minutes by car to the Boca Grande Causeway, which crosses the Intracoastal Waterway to Gasparilla Island and the village of Boca Grande. Once on the island, from 19th St. south there is beach access on every street all the way to the south end of the island, which is another 3 1/2 miles. So there are literally dozens of (uncrowded) Gulf beaches.

To the north, it is only 15 minutes to the town of Venice, with extensive shopping/dining, and only 40 minutes to Sarasota, with all of this and its additional cultural attractions.

For guests trailering boats, in addition to the driveway, which can accommodate two vehicles with trailers, there is an uninterrupted stone covered strip between the front fence and the road, which is 11' wide by 110' long, which can accommodate multiple cars and even multiple vehicles towing boat trailers. In regard to boat trailers, this is very convenient as there is pull-in/pull-out parking, requiring no backing or turning. There are multiple public boat ramp facilities 4 minutes north and south of the property, for launching your boat or our tandem kayak.

Each guest is provided with a personalized code for keyless entry valid for the length of their stay. Check-in is 4:00 pm and check-out is 10:00 am.

Rental fees for reservations made more than 60 days in advance of your arrival date can be made in 2 or 3 installment payments.

About Richard Haynes

My name is Richard Haynes. I was raised in Virginia, Florida, Maryland and DC during the 50s and 60s. When we were not living in Florida, we still visited annually for vacation and to see family in Sarasota and Fort Pierce (Sarasota's Marie Selby was my great-aunt). Trips to Florida were always the highlight of the year. For me, moving back to Florida on a full-time basis has been a dream come true, being a time of renewal and an opportunity to rediscover all of those things I loved about the Gulf coast as a child.

Why Richard Haynes chose Englewood

Having lived in and visited different parts of Florida, the southwest Gulf coast is my favorite by far. Within that region, the Englewood/Lemon Bay/Cape Haze area is the 'sweet spot' for me. Only 45 minutes from all of the resources and activities offered by Sarasota, it is still a small community with much of the charm of 'Old Florida' that I recall from my youth. Old Englewood still has that small town feel and is generally slow paced. Access to beautiful, natural areas and Gulf beaches is exceptional. Minshall's Garden reminds me of the house in Fort Walton Beach/Destin where I lived as a child in the 1950s. When I first saw it, with its large double lot and roomy backyard, I knew it had incredible potential for creating a special intimate, outdoor space for relaxation and the enjoyment of nature - a tropical oasis. We are in the tropical zone of far South Florida, which means that not only all the citrus family are grown here, but also coconuts, mangos, papaya, bananas, etc., giving the area a truly tropical feeling.

What makes this house unique

This property has an intimate warmth, which is hard to find at any price. The comforts of the back yard with its screened lanai and pool enclosure, multiple seating areas, luxuriant tropical foliage, cabaña and pergola with pond and cascading waterfall are absolutely seductive. You may come here with the idea of having it be your base-camp and find that it is your destination.

Inviting home and accomodating owner.

The owner was kind and accommodating. Lovely back yard, lanai and pool areas. Close to the wonderful downtown historic area on Dearborn, that was a major plus. Farmers Market, Classic Car Shows, Art Fairs, Seafood and Jazz fest to name a few fun things held there. Lots to do in nearby Venice and a lovely water front (on Lemon Bay) restaurant in Englewood called Farlow's. A few beach restaurants a pleasant drive away too.

Most of the indoor furnishings need updating as do the kitchen appliances. The casita has no restroom causing guests to have to walk in the dark to get to the facility in the garage at night. Surrounded by noisy businesses. A decent car ride to good beaches.

But...the immediate next door neighbors live in a shanty and were frightening: (they had an aggressive dog that came after my husband and our tiny toy schnoodle on two occasions). Thank God it wasn't our 6 year old grandson in the front yard when the dog barreled over! Literally dozens of people in and out all day and night. The man of the house started his diesel truck up at 7am and let it run for 1/2 hour every morning the fumes were so bad they filled the rental garage, family room and kitchen daily. We dead bolted all the doors when home and away. Richard is going to try to do something about it. We are renting in Sarasota for winter 2019.

The property is near the main road but set up in such a way that it is extremely private.

We cooked, biked, swam , and entertained family members during the holidays. This felt like our home. There was plenty of room for each of us to share space when we wanted to and to quietly get up at different times to eat, read, or check email without disturbing anyone else. My son brought his small dog. Because the yard is completely enclosed, we didn’t have to worry about him roaming elsewhere. Richard was available and helpful. We would love to return.

My friends and I had a wonderful visit to Placida ! The house was so comfortable and relaxing. All we needed was there . Had an awesome tour of the gardens and so much history with the fauna of our area . The beaches are amazing and dog friendly which allowed me to create awesome memories with my dogs and friends . Thank you Richard for accommodating us so superbly after hurricane Irma. Hope to visit again!
