Overview

About the property

Set in 10 hectares of private land comprising just 5 exclusive villas

"Villa Louise" sits in a private estate of 5 villas and within 10 hectares of land. The buildings were designed by Le Corbusier in the 1960s and are now listed properties. The building and the interior rooms are stunning - all are elegantly furnished with state of the art equipment; not least a SPA at lower ground level that is perfect for winter and spring breaks to maximise on pampering. The total footprint of the property and garden covers 2000 m2 with the house being 220 m2. The surrounding countryside around the villa is the Garrigue scrubland made up of stunted small oak trees, juniper, lavender, thyme, rosemary and artemisia. A heavenly scent during many months of the year to endorse that South of France feel to your holiday.

No expense has been spared in achieving a deluxe feel to the rooms and the facilities. The kitchen more than exceeds expectations for a rental property. It has been fitted out by the owner, a gastronomic chef who previously worked for 20 years at Le Vieux Castillon in the village, a highly acclaimed hotel in this department of the Languedoc. The wife of the owner is an interior designer and both of the couple's expertise is very much in evidence.

The spa they have built on the lower garden level of the house is the perfect addition to this property to offer a holiday of comfort and well being. There is a sauna, a jacuzzi, a hammam (wet steam room), and shower facilities. A music centre and a perfume diffuser complete this very special place to retreat to for a little self indulgence.

Bedrooms are all tastefully finished in soft neutral colours with TVs receiving English and French channels.

Bedroom 1: A double bed, TV, and en suite bathroom and washbasin/toilet.

Bedroom 2: This second room has floor to ceiling wardrobe and shelves. Again, soft neutral colours and also a TV in this room. There is a double bed and also an en suite shower room hand built using the local soft rounded pebbles washed down the Rhone river, plus toilet and washbasin.

Bedroom 3: a double bed set in a room with pretty view including the aqueduct. This room also has a tastefully designed bathroom comprising toilet and washbasin.

Bedroom 4 set at the lower garden level and can be accessed via the main house or from the garden. This is similar to a deluxe studio as it has a small kitchen, bedroom, bathroom with 2 washbasins.

A tower in the villa is ideal as an office space if one of the rental group needs to stay in touch with business personnel. (There is also a sofa bed in this room 140cms wide that could be used to avoid disrupting the rest of the house if you need to work or if a friend comes to spend a few days with you).

There is a swimming pool 5m x4m. There is a protective roller shutter across the pool as security. The pool is heated from April to September. It is possible to request a heated pool outside of the these months for a price supplement.

GARDEN and TERRACES:

The garden has been beautifully planted with olive trees, oleander, lavender and other Mediterranean trees and shrubs. The owners have also created a petanque court. There is an upper terrace leading out from the salon and facing directly onto the Pont du Gard. Here is a generous and comfortable seating area and also full dining facilities including a gas Weber barbecue. This terrace measures 40 m2.

A lower terrace is accessed via the garden or from the lower bedroom and is 15 m2.

MOBILITY IMPAIRED INFORMATION:

Once in the house, there are bedrooms, toilets, kitchen and sitting room all on ground level. To access the house from the garden, there two steps. Not all doorways are wheelchair suitable owing to dimensions.

PARKING: There is a covered car port plus an enclosed drive area that an take a further 2 vehicles.

PETS:

One dog can be accepted with prior notification.

THE VILLAGE:

Castillon du Gard is a pretty, hilltop village, with houses made of the local attractive limestone that gives a beautiful golden yellow colour to the buildings and typical of many of the villages in this area. It is a perfect to leave the property and wander on foot to take in the history of the old ramparts, the pretty cobbled streets, a windmill, the roman chapel and the church tower. The villa is 700 metres from the village shops and weekly market. There is a stunning viewpoint that allows you to look over the valley and directly onto the World Heritage awarded site of the Pont du Gard (the iconic roman aqueduct). This is also clearly visible from the terrace of the villa and the sitting room.

Castillon is also on the doorstep of Uzes, the popular medieval town that offers one of the South of France’s best street markets.

This area is known for its cultural, sporting and relaxing qualities. It is has inspired artists who have captured the area e.g. Van Gogh, Monet and Cezanne. The quarry under Les Baux de Provence has an annual light show where the great masters are reflected throughout the quarry. It is a highlight absolutely not to be missed.

Nature lovers can go for breathtaking hikes in the Cevennes or in the Gorges du Gardon – also a bit further away on Mont Ventoux.

You can stay within close proximity of the village and take in the many interesting towns and sites or drive to the coast for a day by the beach (approximately 45 minutes). For a vastly different landscape, an hour will take you to the salt marshes, flamingoes, white horses and bulls of the Camargues area. The Cevennes hills are to the north of Castillon and perfect for autumn rentals to admire the changing trees and collect chestnuts on the roadside.

About Gill MEREDITH

The owners of this villa are French. My name is Gill Meredith and I manage the rental of this property for them - particularly as they are keen to welcome visitors from several continents and they find having an English person helps with the enquiries and the web site. I live in a neighbouring village, St Hilaire d'Ozilhan, and the owners of the Castillon villa also live in this village.

I also offer personalised wine tours if you are a wine enthusiast or a beginner. I was previously a member of the Commanderie de Bordeaux when I lived in the UK and am now a member of the Compagnie de Cote de Rhone Gardoise. I will pick you up by car and introduce to the local growers and staff. Subject to your availability we will taste and explore the wine appellations of Cote du Rhone, Tavel, Lirac, Chateauneuf du Pape. I will explain the local "terroir" and cultivation methods and act as translator with vineyard owners should you wish this assistance.

Why Gill MEREDITH chose Castillon-du-Gard

I manage a number of rental properties and, therefore, I see a varying range of houses and quality of facilities. This villa is simply superb. It has been very tastefully furnished with all bedrooms having en suites. The addition of spa facilities on the ground floor indicate the level of comfort that the owners want for their guests. The husband has been a professional chef and it shows as the kitchen is second to none and is the best equipped that I have seen. As renters frequently comment "it is a professionel's kitchen and it has everything and more".

The village sits in a perfect location as it is close to the A9 motorway but far enough not to be affected by noise or pollution. It also has a choice of airports and the TGV train that arrives into Avignon and also Nimes.

What makes this villa unique

I have lived here 13 years. It is a very special area. We are surrounded by vineyards and there are superb quality wines at a very reasonable price. The vineyards provide a pretty backdrop to the region that also has sunflowers and lavender. It has a variety of pretty hilltop villages and a large Roman influence in the architecture of the houses and monuments.

The owner offers to cook you a gastronomic dinner at the house and ensure it is all prepared and then will leave to allow you to dine in private in the perfect surrounding with great food. He can select the food for you should you wish to pay him or you can provide your own. It is certainly highly recommended to allow him to demonstrate some of the local specialities.

Notes:
The owner was the Head Chef for the prestigious "Le Vieux Castillon" hotel for 20 years - a highly regarded hotel in the Languedoc area. He would be delighted to cook you a local meal ready on your arrival day. He would do this for 35 euros per head and it would be all prepared by him at the villa and then he would leave you to enjoy your evening. Please indicate when booking if you would like to experience his fine-dining.

A Slice of Heaven in Provence - 5 Stars Aren't Enough!

  • 5 of 5

We just had the pleasure of staying at this absolutely stunning home in Castillon-du-Gard. From the moment we arrived, absolutely everything exceeded expectations. The photos don't do the villa justice, and they certainly don't communicate the great care and warmth that you feel when staying here! They've thought about absolutely everything.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by Gill, the house manager, as well as Gilles and Mireille, the owners. They had prepared a breadboard with fresh fougasse, a plate overflowing with handmade cookie/tarts, a large fruit basket, and other treats. The fridge was stocked with orange juice and milk, so we were set for the morning.

We toured the Chef's kitchens (separate prep kitchen is attached to main kitchen). Chef Gilles has not spared a thing. Multiple ovens (all Miele), 2 cooktops (induction and gas), built-in deep fryer, built-in wall Nespresso, large fridge with ice and water dispenser, wine fridge, dishwasher... If you like to cook, it's a dream.

All four bedrooms are roomy and gorgeously decorated and appointed, with an ensuite for every room (there's also a powder room near the kitchen and pool). Beds and linens are all very comfortable, and we slept extremely well. The photos don't show the downstairs suite very well - it is huge, with a king sized bed, kitchenette area, and separate toilet/tub areas. It also has a private walk-out to the garden.

The terrace is huge and the stunning, manicured gardens filled with olive trees and lavender are one of the best parts. We spent much of our time here, on the couches or eating at the tables. The view of the Pont-du-Gard is better than the photos. You're literally staring right at it and it's lit up in colour every night. After dinner, we loved playing petanque on the court in the gardens, next to the lavender patch. We all enjoyed the plunge pool in the heat as well!

The spa is, as described, fully equipped with more than you could ever hope for.

Finally, I can't end without sharing our favourite 2 things. The house comes with a stocked cellar of excellent, curated wines of the region, all at cost (actually, cheaper than we could find anywhere else). This was a huge perk. Secondly, we had quite literally, the most memorable meal of our lives, cooked by Chef Gilles and served by Mireille (an add-on). This 9-course meal with wine pairings, cooked by a Michelin star chef under the stars, was a dream come true. Merci, merci, merci.
