About Val F

.My husband and I travel frequently between Hilo and Oahu. I manage a community center in the town I grew up in and my husband manages the publication department for the local newspaper. We enjoy bodysurfing, ziplining, picnic bbqs, hanging out with our dogs and trying new foods. We're friendly and easy to get along with so please don't hesitate to ask questions if you want recommendations or if there's something that we can address during your stay. We're grateful for the opportunity to host you during your Hawaii island vacation.

Why Val F chose Wainaku

The Kaiwiki house is very special to us. We were the first family on the street to rebuild and renovate, now our neighbors have followed suit. It's our Hilo diamond in the rough.

What makes this cottage unique

There is wide, open park with avacado, ginger, strawberry guava that is perfect for a morning walk and ideal for the kids to play ball, run around, or fly a kite. Just beyond the park is a short path to a swimming hole and waterfall.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you for sharing your wonderful place with us. The kids had an awesome time & it helped that there were TVs in each room on those rainy days. your book collection made visits to the beach even more relaxing. And as a family of 6, we couldn't have asked for a better place for the price. We would definitely return and stay at your rental again.

Clean, spacious, and newly remodeled. Nice place. Tucked in a local neighborhood. Gives you a sense of genuine Island life. Roosters in the neighborhood so AC in the bedrooms was greatly appreciated. We slept well. Owner is great to work with.

Okay for the price

  • 3 of 5

My family stayed here for 4 nights while visiting the Island of Hawaii. The house is spacious with three bedrooms each with large closets and the a/c units in each of them was a must of our family! The split bathroom with the double sinks made it easier for the five us of to get ready in the mornings. The neighbors do have a *ton* of roosters in their backyard that crow NON-stop and it was loud! After a couple of days you almost get use to it, but we were gone most days and I just wore earplugs at night.

The fridge had mold all around the seal and even some inside and the sponge used the wash the dishes smelled, so we opted to purchase our own which wasn't a biggie because they are like $1.

The biggest obstacle for us was that the entire back of the house obviously reeked of mold due to some larger unknown cause (in the basement we presumed...we didn't go down there to even do laundry because of how bad the mold smell was). This might not be a problem for everyone, but I issues with migraines and my mother has asthma.

Overall, we wouldn't stay here should we visit the Big Island again.

Pleasantly suprised

  • 5 of 5

I was a little nervous driving into the neighborhood, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but this home truly is a diamond in the rough. Our host was so kind and the sheets and towels were so soft and smelled so good. Everything was in order and it was a great place to stay. The roosters and coqui are a bit noisy so they may bother you or they may lull you to sleep and help you wake up in the morning, depending on your perspective. Thank you again Val.

Not There Yet

  • 1 of 5

The odor struck me as I walked into the larger than normal home. It wan't there when I left, but the strong smell seemed to have a hint of sweet smelling fragrance so I tried to dismiss it. But the odor lingered. I turned off the fan in the bedroom, evidence someone entered prior to my arrival which likely was the owner who asked to enter the home the day before.

Then I wondered about the association of why the fan was on and the fairly pungent odor. Later it clicked in my mind the smell reminded me of residual insect / bug / pest spray or "smoke bombs". Not a healthy environment especially for babies or others with compromised health.

I'd rate that worse than the apparent rodents running across the ceiling at night and clawing / scratching within the interior walls of the kitchen. I didn't actually see vermin in the home.

I'd rate that worse than the "chirping" coqui frogs throughout the lush vegetation around the home. Their chirping at night seemed nearly deafening, cute at first, but eerie as the night wore on.

The home sits in an older somewhat dilapidated neighborhood and wasn't appealing to me.

I liked the spaciousness of the home but wondered why the living room furniture wood frame "penetrated" through the fabric when I sat on it; why the kitchen appliances worked but looked worn out; why the back room walls were left with the paint roller markings as if the paint ran out; why...

I think you get the picture.

I credit the owner's politeness and readiness to assist, but I rate this experience a 1 especially because of the very bad odor in the home, evidence of an attempt to mask an infestation problem putting my health at risk.

Owner's Response: We are sorry that the house disappointed you. We truly want every guest to enjoy their time on Hawaii Island and feel at home and comfortable during their stay. I remember texting with you about the fire alarm chirp that isn't mentioned. My husband came to the house to address it. You were very kind and could have shared any concerns with us in person or by text. Especially if you felt there were conditions detrimental to your health. I assure you we would have made every effort to investigate, explain, remedy situations or find a solution ASAP. The texts you sent the next day and upon your departure also made no mention of the conditions documented in this review. We are very sorry about your experience and ask that future guest communicate their issues concerns so we can address them. We have had many happy guests stay and come back through the years to stay again at our vacation rental. True our plantation neighborhood and home are humble, but we do our best to maintain the integrity of our house and listing. We are honest about what the rental has to offer and try to remedy things within our purview in a timely manner. At the same time, we both work full time on separate islands to support our family. While our house may not be the right fit for every guest, we are grateful for the opportunity to share it with visitors from around the world. And we thank you for taking the time to share with us your perceptions about the house.
