1/5 Terrible

I would not recommend this gite.
We arrived at the Sallow Gite after a smooth 6 1/2 hours drive from Calais. We requested directions in advance and were told to follow the blue line on a map they sent by email. We found the gite and the owners met us there. The beds were not fully made up and we were asked whether we required sheets?! Obviously we did, and they were provided. The owners also took a considerable damage deposit on arrival. We disappointingly found that there were no refreshments at all in the fridge - not even a bottle of water so with 5 tired and hungry children we went to the local town to find some food. Everything was closed. At the end of our 2 week stay the owners asked to come to the gite at 7.15am as we were departing at 7.30am which we thought was strange. When they arrived they proceeded to check right through the gite, including cupboards. We broke 2 glasses which we explained we had replaced. There was a further 15 minute heated discussion when the owners tried to tell me I had to pay for linen hire and the cleaning of the gite (I was told that linen hire is usual in France). Mme Deschamps then suggested she keep part of our damage deposit to cover the linen hire and cleaning (the invoice we received from Homeaway said the charge was, "Menage - 0"). We felt completely boxed into a corner as we had to leave catch the Eurotunnel - we had little choice. Though we had enjoyed a good holiday in France we left feeling rather cheated and let down. We wouldn't recommend this particular gite to other holidaymakers.
