LIVING AREA: With floor-to-ceiling A-frame windows (see photo) and promontory location at the northern head waters of Upper St. Regis Lake, you experience a wilderness retreat, indoors as well as out, right beneath the many moods of one of the Adirondack High Peaks, St. Regis Mountain. Relax in front of the stone fireplace after a day outdoors (some wood provided); purchase outdoor wood w/CampCredits or buy your own bundles roadside before arrival. The deck w/chairs, table/umbrella and grill (fuel incl) is just out the kitchen door for beautiful sunset suppers. The rustic wood floors have antique Nepalese carpets in every room.

Guests use own coolers for fridge overflow; limited storage in fridge/freezer in Boathouse. FREE membership: Value added: food waiting for you in Northpoint's kitchen!

LOFT: The ceiling is high enough for a cozy loft that overlooks the LR fireplace below and has a divine view of St. Regis Mtn. Find up here two small rooms that use the downstairs bath. There's a Queen bed out on a traditional Adirondack Sleeping Porch; the other has a panoramic view & can be used as a lounge area with another Double bed . There is electric heat downstairs and super efficient propane hot water on demand throughout.

FAMILY BEDROOM: The Master addition has an outside entrance with a King bed and a Queen pull-out couch making it a Family Suite if required. The new stackable washer/dryer is in the bathroom with shower, sink and commode opens through to the

TWIN-BEDDED ROOM right off the open-concept, high, exposed-beam living area. Here the First Aid Kit is accessible mounted on the wall of a tall built-in cupboard.

This bath has also a sink and commode; it is central in the house and is the primary facility for the loft doubles and is one of two toilet options for the Twin room.

COMMUNICATION: We have intermittent 4G Verizon phone reception at several places around camp and, for your online needs, wifi in our 'internet cafe' outdoors mid-camp and also in the Lakeside Bungalow which requires an ethernet cable .

CAMPFIRES: Care and common sense apply with all fire in the forest. At the outside entrance to the Family Suite is a garden hose with nozzle; it is permanently on for guest use as needed. Smoking is permitted outside only. Ashtrays are provided for the deck.

MOST IMPORTANT: Campfires on the house promontory point and on Lean-to Island must be kept small & personally attended at all times as well as doused out completely on departure. Keep the onsite water container by the firepit at the island and the hose close to the fire ring off the house main deck.

LEAN-TO ISLAND: The canoes/kayaks are kept here - there's a sign to remind you to pull them onto shore . This secluded dock gets sunlight most of the day, water is deep enough for diving. The open campfire - rare in the Adks - is here in front of an authentic Lean-to for camp outs. Be sure to carry a flashlight if out after dark - the hike across the bridge and up to the Main House is dark and narrow. There find a Queen mattress enclosed in mosquito netting, a charcoal grill and outdoor cooking implements. Guests are provided an extensive reference book on arrival to begin this memorable vacation at the edge of 6 million acres of Adirondack State Park. We welcome adult groups and families for a unique and timeless experience.

OPTIONS: Lakeside Mission-style stone bungalow with deck, gas fireplace, Queen bed, sm. fridge, coffee maker, sink, toilet. About Lynn and Jim Cameron

Lynn and Jim Cameron have lived on Upper St. Regis Lake in this Caretaker's Cabin since 1980. It is part of the Northpoint Camp complex and one of 3 original buildings remaining of the original 'Little Pond Camp' built in 1905 and destroyed by fire in 1945. The Main house high on the promontory replaced the owner's bedroom cabin complex in 1965.

Jim has built more traditional Adirondack Guideboats that any other living builder. His shop is located on the property and welcomes guests for tours and maybe to try out rowing one of his boats.

3 Samoyeds, a very social breed, share camp with all of us. Pets brought to camp must be socialized enough to get along with our camp canines. Your supervision is essential and barking must be controlled.

Lynn and Jim Cameron purchased this chateau / country house in 1963

Why Lynn and Jim Cameron chose New York

Travel is by boat. Not an island, but NO ROAD ACCESS. Living without the sound of wheeled vehicles is not only rare but usually not accessible in such rustic comfort in an area so convenient to get to. Our guests greatly enjoy this exclusive property complex surrounded by privately held Adirondack Camp estates. You will have full access to this property; all other islands are privately held and not available for use. NEW in 2016 - 4 psgr. motorboat for occasional use by qualified driver - 1 tank of fuel FREE. This makes trips to the car & town for errands easy and quick leaving more time for 'fun' paddling. It also allows the fishermen easy quiet time in Northbay with a quick way back to camp.

You'll use our private Lean-to Island for campfire cookouts and swimming from the island's dock in the shadow of St. Regis Mt. and in afternoon sun. There's convenient water access to the St. Regis Mt. hiking trail; there's a round trip canoe adventure taking in 3 lakes and a river; you may paddle the famous '7 Carries' to St. Regis Pond for the day without the need to carry camping gear and arrive back to your own camp for supper on the deck. Onsite is a comprehensive guide/maps to the immediate and greater area hiking and canoeing. Provided by a local camp owner for lake residents, it contains information not available anywhere else.

Northpoint has something to interest every member of your group and the acreage to provide enough privacy even for groups traveling together. Increased vitality can be found here reflected in the clear water at the base of St. Regis Mountain and in the breathing in of earth and forest. Drink slow and deep of our pure mountain water for a long-lasting boost surpassing the energizing effects of just the physical activity and social interaction often associated with vacations. Store all the light from your time in these mountains as renewal for your whole year; things to be remembered until your return to this dream.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

At Northpoint Camp on Upper St. Regis Lake deep in the northern forest those that wish can take their wilderness in civilized doses from a sheltering porch. Level of activity notwithstanding, it is certain as the moon and tide, that those who come to these pristine waters are still taken into the vibe - infinite green cathedrals of the forest; the blue/green vista from St. Regis summit; the cry of the loon in chorus across wilderness ponds in the distance. The effect of an Adirondack Lake can charm beyond understanding. We've cherished this privilege for 40 years in all seasons. Now we offer to share it with you. Do come for a visit this Spring, Summer, Solstice, Harvest or Autumn. You won't regret choosing this very special & unique getaway for couples, groups and families.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Northpoint was sooo charming and it was the perfect venue for us to reconnect with our friends, Dennis and Sue, and their daughters, Maddy and Sophie, whom we hadn't seen since they were babies. The kids loved the frogs, having us paddle them around in the canoes (whew, what a workout), the campfires, and swimming in the lake off the dock. My youngest son, Taogh, is still talking about watching the meteor shower. Thank you for creating so many opportunities for wonderful memories!

Wonderful stay on Upper St Regis

  • 5 of 5

We spent two weeks enjoying the beautiful Upper St Regis Lake. Our host Jim and Lynn were wonderful sharing all their knowledge and history of the area. The main house was very comfortable and had all the need amenities, dishwasher, washer and dryer, and a very large tub complete with soaking salts. The kithen was well stocked with all need cooking items. This was only topped by the T-house bedroom on the waters edge, magnificent. Wake up over looking the lake. The lake itself is clean and quite. It was paradise for our family vacation. There is little reason to leave the property during your stay. With a lean-to located on the poperty and a great hike up Mt St Regis across the lake we had everything we needed for a great outdoor vacation on the lake.

Great getaway from BTV to ADK Wild

  • 5 of 5

I was only able to spend one night at magnificent Northpoint, joining my husband at the end of his weeklong stay there with some friends in May. A month later, I'm plotting a much longer return visit for both of us! My girlfriend and I drove from Burlington, VT, taking the Grand Isle ferry, and were there in about 2 hours. We called our unfailingly helpful hostess Lynn as we approached the lake, and a boat was at the docks in no time. Our host, Jim, knew the lake like the back of his hand and we even persuaded him to move his route a bit closer to the shoreline so we could gawk at the imposing camps, many quite new.

As we neared Northpoint, though, I could see we'd be enjoying a property forged by time and more integrated with the landscape: weathered hand-hewn wood, massive stone steps, and native flowers in cultivated gardens (don't miss the labyrinth!) as well as all their wild glory.

We prepared and shared meals with our friends at the Main House, which was very well outfitted with a gas grill outside, electric stove/range and dishwasher inside, and all the necessary cookware.

But cocktails were enjoyed at our bedsite, the enchanting lakeside stone bungalow. Just a short walk from the main house and down huge stone stairs, its deck wraps right around to the lake so you could drop a line and catch fish for breakfast in the morning (just supposing - no personal proof!). It was so relaxing to kick back there with our friends, listening to the loons calling up and down the lake.

We felt so privileged to stay there, waking up (in a very comfortable bed) and seeing loons out the multi-paned windows without even throwing off the covers. We could enjoy quiet time and coffee on the deck before joining the gang at the main house for a boisterous morning making brunch and playing a round of golf on Jim's crazy course. You've played the links, you've played the parks, but you haven't really golfed 'til you've played the woods!

After 24 hours at Northpoint I felt as refreshed as if I'd had a week away on one of our usual city vacations. We'll definitely be returning, and I look forward to paddling around the lake and getting out on the trails. This is truly a magical place and we were so impressed with how Lynn and Jim care for and share it; their deep respect for its heritage is evident everywhere. Also, they have three of the most beautiful, adorable Samoyeds you've ever seen!

A cozy lakeside Adiriondack camp experience

  • 5 of 5

We spent 3 weeks here and loved every minute. Jim and Lynn are hardy year round residents at this roadless camp, about a 10 minute powerboat ride from the parking lot and landing. we stayed in "Judy's Cabin", long inhabited by Jim's mother, and just renovated. This is not a sterile vacation bungalow environment. You can feel the decades of happy occupancy every day. The panoramic window view of the lake and shoreline, upstairs loft, large library, warm comforters on the beds, and the big stone fireplace and plentiful wood supply make even rainy days a delight. There's electric heat, too, when you don't want a fire. A canoe, leanto, and fire rings are just the start of outdoor amenities. We loved watching sunsets from the deck, or paddling out to watch the loons on the quiet lake as evening fell. Hearing the loons calling to each other is a special treat. Although it was late September, we went swimming off the boathouse dock on many evenings -- very relaxing.

The primary hiking route is up St Regis Mountain, which can be reached directly on foot from the cabin, or with less walking from a dock accessible across the lake by canoe. There are several public leantos in the area which are perfect for shorter walks and picnic lunches. If you like dogs, Jim and Lynn's three large, fluffy, white samoyeds are eager to be your hiking companions. Although they normally stay away from the cabin and don't disturb guests, we lured them over shamelessly until they hung around with us. The full array of Adirondack hiking, scenery, and attractions are available by car from the landing.

This is not a luxury camp, although many of the private camps on the three interconnected lakes are owned by multi-millionaires. It's a very cozy and rustic environment, perfect (in my opinion) for groups of 4-6. The newly remodeled kitchen is very well equipped. Saranac Lake, a 15 minute drive from the landing, has a full array of grocery and shopping options. If paddling and walking aren't sufficient motive power, you can easily trailer in a powerboat.

Jim is one of the few remaining Adirondack guideboat builders, and if you're lucky, he'll show you his work and his well equipped shop. He also has a great album showing what the camp was like over the past 100 years.

All in all, this is a great place to spend a week or two comfortably communing with nature in the Adirondacks. Very highly recommended! In addition to having a great time, you're also supporting a warm, deserving couple.

Stay at Paul Smiths aka North Point on Upper St. Regis Lake, Adirondacks

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at North Point (as I prefer to call it) from mid-September to early October 2014, and my sojourn there was one filled with immense beauty and joy. This "camp" has four buildings altogether, including the owners' cabin. My traveling companion and I stayed mainly in the other cabin but on some evenings slept in the charming Japanese-style "hut" abutting the lake shore. There is also a spacious yurt in the woods. All of these buildings have views of the lake and all of them are uniquely lovely inside and out. I like sitting by a fire and on cooler days and nights enjoyed writing, reading and dreaming by our cabin's living room fireplace. My companion and I delighted in spending time with the owners' three Samoyed dogs and we hiked with them more than once up St. Regis Mountain. The view from the mountaintop was one of many pleasures, and we were able to see a vast expanse of other mountains when the autumn trees were changing to their most vivid colors. I had always wanted to see and hear loons, and I was not disappointed; nearly every day I was treated to seeing them and hearing their low and exquisite music. Sometimes we went boating/canoeing, and thanks to a spell of warm weather were able to swim in the lake until we left in October. This camp really has something for everyone, whether one likes to be active, take photographs, or just sit around and daydream in a dreamy natural setting. Great for romance, of course! Just to make things at North Point perfect, the owners are interesting, creative, caring, and helpful people. They have a deep feeling for the Adirondacks and I really respect that about them. Someday I hope to go back.

Owner's Response: Dear Susie - thanks so much for your kind words about your stay, about us as hosts, and particularly for making our dogs' lives so interesting while you were here. I've promised Wolfie a doggie cake for his 16th birthday in May; he's still trotting around camp coping with the youngsters. We, too, hope the two of you will have occasion to revisit Northpoint Camp. May the wind be at your back in your future travels. The Camerons
