Very nice apartment in a quaint neighborhood a short walk to rialto bridge.
We very much enjoyed our stay at Isabella’s apartment. It was well equipped for us to cook dinners with a market nearby. The neighborhood was friendly and just a 3/4 mile walk to Plaza San Marco. Isabella’s restaurant reconmendations were great for quality and good pricing, and her savvy cautions of what to avoid purchasing were much appreciated. The rooms were comfy. There was a yoga studio only steps away! Campo San Polo in the evening felt safe and welcoming, and we enjoyed the flight of acrobatic swifts darting around the sky before retiring to chimney roosts for the night. Bellisima!
Since our first email and in spite of having never met personally John and Elizabeth became friends. Communication between us was always easy and smooth and I cannot be other than very happy that they enjoyed their stay in Venice and in the Fairy little house very much. They left the house clean and in order. They are the perfect guests! Spero che, prima o poi, ritorneranno!
Live like a Venetian in this quiet Campiello
So often during a vacation it's difficult to experience a place from a local's perspective, though that's exactly why we use platforms like VRBO.com. That's especially true in a city as well loved and visited as Venice. But this gem of a property and the graciousness of its owner, Isabella Colace, allows you to do just that.
The San Polo district is very close to all the major sites and is a short walk or vaporetto ride from the train and bus stations. We took the train in, and took a bus to the airport out, walking to and from the house in 15 minutes. Isabella provides very easy to follow directions. Campo San Polo has visitors who pass through during the day, lost in the maze of streets and shops, but in the early evenings it is filled with local residents and their dogs, enjoying conversation on benches under the trees listening to accordion music from strolling musicians.
Because there are windows on both sides of the home, the breezes are lovely, and we were comfortable leaving the windows open during the evenings. I loved hearing piano music drifting in one afternoon, and cheers another day as the neighbors living across the canal were watching Italian football on TV.
The kitchen is well appointed and it was a short walk to the Rialto Market to select fresh fish and vegetables to dine in, or fresh pastries from nearby patisseries. The grocery store is less than 5 minutes away, and there is a shopping cart at the bottom of the stairs. Isabella even keeps ice cube trays in the freezer, as her husband enjoys ice as much as we do!
The bedroom is very comfortable, and there is a lot of closet space. It was fun to wash our clothes (available if staying 7 days), hang them to dry over the canal, then iron them and hang them, instead of living with wrinkles out of jam-packed suitcases. The living room was comfortable, and we enjoyed the books on Venetian mask making and the history of the homes along the Grand Canal. The bathroom was clean and the showers were hot, allowing tired muscles to unwind.
The Campiello is at a dead end adjacent to a small canal, and those who discover it are either looking for quiet, or are wandering in the maze and are surprised when it ends, or are residents hanging laundry and enjoying the sunshine.
Isabella was so gracious, accommodating, and accessible both before and during our stay and was especially considerate helping us troubleshoot train travel delays. Five stars! This is a true gem in a great city.
I am moved by the comment written by Stephanie and Paul. It is not easy to run a house with guests who frequently come and go arriving sometimes from the farthest and oddest parts of the world with their different expectations and needs. When I saw the Little Fairy House I fell in love with it and decided to buy it, then I furnished it trying to make it lovely, cosy and picturesque in order to make the guests feel they are part of the unique world which is Venice. I too rent houses every now and then and often they are IKEA houses: nice but essential and all alike and you feel you are not at home and, as in this case a Venetian, but you are in an IKEA shop. Following the words of Stephanie and Paul, it seems I succeeded in reaching my goal and this fully rewards me of all the difficulties a house owner inevitably meets.
Thanks to you for appreciating my efforts and, of course, come back whenever!
Historic well appointed flat with character
Isabella’s place was all we hoped it would be! It was in a central location (right next to a yoga studio as well!) in the San Polo area. Shops, food, gondolas, more shops, more food, more shops....you get the idea. Easy to get onto the vaporetto (public boat taxi) and “hop” from place to place. So much history here!! We very much enjoyed coming back to Isabella place and winding down after a day’s adventures. She was also very understanding and accommodating. Thank you Isabella!
Joanne and her husband were very easy going guests: very nice people. everything went as smooth as possible and i do hope they will come back for a longer period.
A charming apartment
Stayed at the Fairy House for 4 nights in April. It is a charming flat and suited a family of 4. The super market was just around the corner and the flat had all the essential kitchen items to make a lovely breakfast and dinner. The girls loved checking the water levels at the inside gate each time we left or came in after sight seeing. Isabella was lovely to deal with, very efficient and gave excellent instructions for the apartment. Will definitely stay again.
Brigid ang her family were delightful guests. We exchanged several messages as they needed some help while staying in Rome, before going to Venice and everything went smooth. They left the house clean and in order and I too wish they will be able to come back.
Very quiet and central but there were quite a few problems
The benefits of the flat are that it is central but extremely quiet which was lovely. But overall we did have some problems. The flat was advertised as having a washing machine which is incorrect - when queried we were told there was one available but only for long stay tenants. If we had realised this we would have chosen another flat. We were also required to pay for gas use, which I have never come across before and we were provided with no evidence to show that the charge per unit was reasonable or reflected the true cost.
When we arrived at the agreed time the flat was freezing as I think it had been empty for the previous week. It would have been considerate of the owner to have arranged for the heating to have been turned on a few hours before we arrived. Finally, although the flat was well equipped and we had no complaints, the notes we were sent in advance were fairly off-putting. A huge list of things not allowed or where previous tenants had done damage - phrases like "you are expected to behave like civilised people" left us with the impression that tenants were seen as problems rather than guests.
I appreciated these guests and gave them 5 stars. I am sorry about their complaints which broke the long list of 5 stars appreciation.
In the Abritel add was clearly stated that the washing machine was available only for periods of at least a week but, if the guests had told me that for them the washing machine was a must, I would have allowed them to use it. Unfortunately they never asked for it and when they arrived the storage place where the washing machine lies was locked and, being Easter time, I had nobody available to go there to open it: I do not think it is my fault if the guests did not read the add properly.
As some guests are sensitive to cold and some are not and may complain if the heater is on for too much time, I consider that it is better to leave the guests masters of the thermostat and free to pay only the gas they consume; the rate I indicated clearly to the guests in the info they received at home, was the one told me by the gas company and I think it is ridiculous to think that I may have cheated on the cost of the gas cubic meter: it would have been easier for me to fix the hours of heating and raise the cost of the rent.
Unfortunately some guests used the sitting room table as an iron-board damaging it in a severe way, some others put hot pots on the kitchen plane staining it, others moved the furniture creating a problem when the housemaid came as she could not put the heavy pieces back to their place, many others left the garbage of an entire week at home (and in Venice this is a big problem due to the peculiarity of the town) or left it along the street and I was fined for it not them. I know nobody of them wished to damage the flat or myself but they did and in order to foresee these inconveniences I give detailed instructions as guests come from any part of the world and their habits and traditions may be extremely different from the Italian ones: I am sure that a guest prefers to be reminded that he must not put the hot iron on the wood table rather than be asked 300 € for the polishing of it. And yes some guests broke and damaged objects and hid them not to pay for the damage: this is not the case of my last unsatisfied tenants but I do not know and I do not even meet my guests and my message is thought for all of them
An Amazing Trip and Accommodation
My husband, daughter and I spent nine nights in Venice at Isabella's wonderful apartment. The location was absolutely perfect and we were very cozy and warm which was a good thing because it was pretty cold outside for us Southern Californians! We had several Acqua Alta moments during our stay and Isabella had boots in the cupboard for us to use. Everything from the directions provided for our arrival (we arrived very late) to all the nice touches in the apartment made our stay perfect. Thank you Isabella for everything (and thanks for answering all my emails so promptly). We will be back!
