Retta Dircksen purchased this chalet in 2009
The couple purchased the property in 2009 after learning it was one of the last undeveloped private parcels on Grand Lake St Marys.
The 8 Acres is a nice location for a weekend couples' getaway for time alone, an energetic family who loves the water or a group of friends just getting away from the hustle and bustle of city life, the 8 Acres is for you!
The holiday home is wonderful. The home is beautiful the location is peaceful & tranquil. We truly enjoyed our stay
The house had great water views and the caretaker Kay was very accommodating and helpful. However we felt we should have been told prior to booking about the water situation. Upon arrival we found out we could not use the water for drinking or cooking. Also the water odor was so strong we did not feel comfortable using it for anything. It was so sad to see this huge body of water so green with algae and other residues.
Overall we had a good time. There were five of us and the house was a good size. Although the house needs a little attention...a thorough cleaning would help. Also, the "manager" lives on the property above the garage about ten feet from the house which is not mentioned anywhere. She has a rather large dog that seems to have free run of the property. My granddaughter runs around barefoot and luckily she didn't step in the dog's messes. It would be nice to mention all this to renters.
House was super cute, and property was great. We enjoyed sitting on the patio, and watching the water, birds, and animals play. The beach area had some glass, so I was a little nervous about letting my son play over there. We went and got him wading shoes, and her was good to go. The guys enjoyed being able to walk outside and fish any time they wanted.
The smell, taste, and lingering odor from the house water from the washer, and shower were at times stomach turning. We were told that it was in the works of getting placed on city water soon. We bought water for cooking and drinking. Simple fix for those situations, but you still have to shower, and wash your clothes in it. It is actually a rather small inconvenience for the peacefulness of the location. We would go again for a weekend getaway.
The property manager was a great help, and fun to hang out with.
This was a perfect setting for nature lovers. Beautiful view of the lake and the great blue heron that visited the shore line frequently every day. We loved the deck, ate our dinners out there and spent hours sitting and watching the lake. The house was rustic and the kitchen was small ( but adequate) if you plan to cook full meals. When we were there the smell of the water was strong. We bought water for drinking at the grocery so it was not a problem.
We booked the 8 acres because it was beautiful & they said they welcomed outdoor weddings. A month before our wedding we were notified that the owner decided to expand the deck which caused the yard to get tore up so they had to reseed the grass. There was 1 small patch of grass just big enough for us to put the tent for our wedding & because of the short notice, we weren't able to find another venue in time so we had no choice but to deal with it. It rained all day on our wedding day so, naturally with the straw everywhere & the small patch of grass we had, it became a muddy mess. We didn't mind because the day still turned out great! All our guests were very polite with the property & careful not to tear anything up. When we cleaned up the next day, we made sure the property was back to the same way as when we got there. The day we were cleaning up, the owner creeped by the property slowly 4 different times but, when we called & called it took a few times for them to answer. When they finally answered they said they wouldn't be able to come out & walk the property with us that day, but, our deposit would be mailed to us. When we got back from our honeymoon & saw there was still no deposit we called to see what was going on. The owner said we had left the place completely destroyed & would not get a deposit back & that we are lucky he isn't sending us a bill. Then, while we were trying to ask him what was destroyed, he hung up on us! We had friends wanting to book this place for a getaway who will now not be going there & we will never be recommending this place to anyone. What takes the cake for us is that all we were doing was trying to get answers & he hung up on us! Bad business all the way around.
