Cottage in Birr Castle Demesne (World-Acclaimed Garden)

Bedrooms 3
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Cottage, 3 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 5)

This secluded cottage (named 'The Bothy') is in Ireland's top heritage garden, the Birr Castle Demesne. The Demesne also includes Ireland's Historic Science Centre, whose galleries are centered on the achievements of the scientific Parsons family, Earls of Rosse. The massive telescope built by the 3rd Earl can be seen in the grounds. The town of Birr is within walking distance and has restaurants, many pubs, a small theatre, and other entertainment in summer.

The area is close to the Slieve Bloom hills, great for walking and cycling, and is only 30 minutes drive from the Shannon for windsurfing and boating in the summer. Fishing is available, as well as horseback riding. Its central location also makes it a good base for touring Ireland - Dublin, Kilkenny, Limerick, and Galway can all be reached within two hours.

Beautiful & cozy

  • 5 of 5

Just an all round wonderful stay. The cottage was warm and cozy and felt like a little home away from home. The people in Birr were very friendly and we can’t wait until we can make it back.

Thanks for everything.

We loved our stay in the Brophy, it was cozy and comfortable.

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our trip to Ireland and staying in the Brophy on Birr Castle grounds was the highlight of our stay. Everyday we enjoyed walking down all the different paths on the grounds. We took a lot of pictures of our walks, to keep the memory of how beautiful the grounds are alive. Our stay incorporated hurricane Ophelia and the Brophy kept us comfy and warm. We look forward to returning to Ireland and the Brophy, in the future.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your kind review. I'm so glad you enjoyed the Bothy . And I'm glad you got safely back after all the drama of Ophelia. Thank goodness it didnt do too much damage, though the Demesne was in an awful mess with branches all over the place - and you saw the big tree down opposite the drive. It would be lovely to have you back here again. Best wishes Alison Rosse

Located in the garden Birr Castle Demesne, and Science Centre Museum. Home of the great telescope of the 3rd Earl of Rosse, 1845. Located within walking distance of the town of Birr, a charming market town with pubs, two hotels with resteraunts, churches, a small theatre. Great walking in the Slieve Bloom mountains about a 10 mile drive away. Histroical sites and castles. Fishing can be arranged in season. Very central in the country with most attractions less than a two hour drive. Train to Dublin for the day at Tullamore, half an hour away.
