About the property

Enjoy staying in a true full log cabin with loft and large covered porch.

This 12-year-old lodge/cabin is a beautiful, full-log home that easily sleeps 20 in beds on three floors, with something for everyone. We've slept over 30 using the spacious downstairs, cots, and air mattresses

A 10-foot wide covered porch provides an additional 600 sq ft of summer living area providing a fantastic view of the lake and the beach, fire pit, tire swing, dock, and raft. Plenty of space to enjoy an Adirondack chair and watch the day slip away.

The beach is sandy, and we have a raft 150 feet from shore, where you can swim in clear water away from vegetation at the water’s edge.

Built in 2002, the lodge has two full fireplaces, including one with a breath-taking, 22-foot stone chimney on the main floor. The lodge has 3,600 sq.ft. on three floors. A main floor with kitchen, living area, one and a half baths, and two main floor bedrooms. The walkout basement has another large living area, full bath, bedroom, utility room (4th bedroom) and small garage / work area.

The loft has one queen and three double beds, and several twin beds perfect for the little ones to experience cabin life. But while it’s a loft, don’t worry about noise from the first floor –that fresh air will knock you out the moment your head hits the pillow.

A grand piano, card table, play area, view of the lake and a small balcony are also available in the loft.

Privacy and quiet are key at this lodge, which is tucked into the woods just four miles outside of Big Rapids, MI.

The all-sport lake is perfect for fishing, tubing, skiing, and swimming. And, with only ten houses dotted around the lake, the water will usually be all yours.

A pontoon boat with fishing motor, paddleboat, paddle boards, row boat, and kayak are all included in your rental fees. (Only between Memorial Day and Labor Day)

We have an active Facebook page with lots more inside and outside photos of the place. Search Facebook for "Loon Lake Lodge Vacations". Be sure to look at the Photo Albums.

Standard check-in times are 4:00 p.m. on the day of the arrival with check-out at 11:00 a.m. on the day of your departure.

About Paul Hillman

We live 55 miles from the lodge. We built it because we enjoy entertaining large groups, and have frequently had church groups or friends up for weekends. We’ve had as many as 42 people overnight, with 22 adults on beds and 20 children on air mattresses or in sleeping bags on the floor. We also have room outdoors for people who prefer to pitch small tents.

Paul Hillman purchased this lodge in 2002

Why Paul Hillman chose Western Michigan

If you are looking for a real log home with a calming, rustic feel, this is the place! You can actually feel the tension melt away the moment you set foot on the 10-foot wide wraparound porch, and plop down in an Adirondack chair overlooking the lake, or in the porch swing. The lodge is perfect for company and church retreats, family reunions, etc. Some friends even think it would be a great place to hold a small wedding. Big Rapids isn’t actually “big” – and that’s part of the charm, too. But it’s big enough – near Ferris State University and small-town shopping.

What makes this lodge unique

Our private dock and pontoon boat facilitate your fishermen's yen to get out on the water. The deep porch lets you get outdoors and remain comfortable, even when it’s raining. We have ping-pong and foosball tables in the walkout basement and a great hockey game for teens and kids of all ages. The fire ring down near the lake is a perfect gathering place for your throng to enjoy some special time together (with marshmallows!) at night, and benches easily seat 16-20 people. Firewood is provided as part of your rental.

Large Group Retreat

  • 5 of 5

My group spent a weekend at the Loon Lake Lodge and had a great time. There is plenty of space and the cabin feels like a home away from home. You can get away from it all at this cabin, or you can go into town near Ferris State and have a night out. If you have a large group, and want a weekend away from your everyday trouble, I highly recommend staying at the Loon Lake Lodge!

Owner's Response: This was a fraternity from a university located here in Michigan. I was very reluctant to rent to them because of poor experiences with young adults in the past. As a result, they had additional requirements, reference checks, and signatures needed to ensure they respected the property. I'm pleased to say this is the 2nd year for this group because it can be done. Most college groups are unwilling to complete the additional "hurdles" to prove they can respect other's property. But if they are willing, we can work with them, and good results can occur. We welcome Ninad and his group back again next year!

Wonderful stay at a great property

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous time and the weather was warm, even though it was late October. The cabin is very beautiful and the location feels very remote even though Big Rapids is nearby. My son said that our weekend at Loon Lake Lodge is his favorite weekend of the year. The Hillmans are very accommodating and answered our emails very quickly. We are already planning our stay next year.

Wonderful spot

  • 5 of 5

We just missed the fall colors (a bit early) but the lodge still made for a lovely weekend for my group's annual fall reunion. We loved the sense of being in the woods, the great views from the cabin, and the quiet lake. My personal favorite part was hearing owls hoot each night while we were at the fire pit.

Our first day was too cold and windy to do much outside, but the lodge is still a great space to visit with friends, and between the books, euchre deck, and boardgames we brought we were well entertained until the weather cleared.

Thank you to Paul and family for a lovely weekend.

It is a wonderful property!!! We were content to stay put all weekend

  • 5 of 5

We are a group of female cousins who get together for a long weekend every year. Loon Lake Lodge really had everything we needed to stay put and enjoy each others company. The covered porch with all the adirondack chairs was by far the most popular place for us to hang out. The weather and water were still warm enough that we were able to take advantage of much of the outdoor rec equipment. The only down side was that we could not start the pontoon boat and one of the SUPs was broken.

Great Place for a family reunion

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful cabin set in a private location in the woods on a lake. We were blessed with great weather. The lake water is clear, the is water warm, and the fishing is great. Our family enjoyed the paddle boats, kayaking, paddle boarding, and cruising on the pontoon boat. We relaxed on the comfy Adirondack porch chairs in the evening and had s'mores by the fire pit at night. The cabin is an architechal wonder. We had 16 adults and 4 children - and the kids had a wonderful time and cried when we left. Thank you Paul & Carol for making your lovely home available to us.

Sullcation 2016

  • 5 of 5

The last night of our stay, we gathered as a family, like we did last year, to discuss whether or not we want to come back in 2017. It was unanimous that the entire family wanted to reserve this place again. We see Loon Lake Lodge as the "standard" for a true family vacation get away. No TV, no distractions, just interaction amongst the family. It's like a comfortable old shoe, or going to that favorite Grandma's house. We love this place, and not once did any of the adults or kids feel they were bored. On our last full day there, one of our grandsons was actually crying and saying he didn't want to leave. Loon Lake Lodge lets you create much needed memories and family bonding, especially in our current world. We highly recommend this place. The owners were readily accessible if we had any questions, as well as very open to suggestions. Thank You for allowing our family to use your home as if it were ours. The Sullivan Family
