|Minimum Stay||2 nights|
In the heart of West Virginia lies a beautiful cottage on the banks of the Buckhannon River. Far enough out to get away from it all but with all of the comforts of home. Spend your days fishing for trout and playing in the river and your nights around the campfire. Fall colors are stunning to see through the six foot picture windows. Kid friendly paradise or adult oasis you decide. Sleeps up to ten. King size bed in master, queen in second bedroom, three singles and a double in third bedroom & futon in loft.
We are a family of six who love to travel. Whether staying at our family paradise, Crossings Cottage or touring Ireland we love taking journeys and spending time together.
Lannette Karnes purchased this cottage in 2004
We built this house on family ground. Our grandparents grew up in this little piece of heaven. The cottage has every convenience and comfort. It is fully stocked for your pleasure. Isn't it time to make some memories for your family on the river?
At a large bend in the Buckhannon River, paradise awaits you. Enjoy morning walks up the railroad tracks, afternoons swimming in the river and evenings around the campfire. You can enjoy the rustic surroundings while having a luxurious home with satellite TV, WiFi and Jacuzzi tub when you are tired of 'roughing' it.
We rented this cabin at the last moment to go skiing at Snowshoe. We liked that the home was roomy and that it had 3 bathrooms. Using different apps to get directions in that area can be a little challenging especially when you are driving a minivan and it sends you on dirt roads (Waze worked best). Yes we did get stuck but that was one part the kids loved the most. Another reason we chose to rent this place was to get to experience some snow and boy did we. What normally took us an hour and a half it ended up being almost 6 hours to get back (had chains on). It snowed about a foot in less than 24 hrs.
When we first arrived at the home we could tell that it hadn't been swept for a while because there were dead ladybugs everywhere on the floor, countertops and beds. These things kept coming out the whole week we were there but thankfully they were not in the kitchen cabinets which by the way were fully stocked. We liked having the 3 bathrooms but the instant hot water heater is not big enough to handle more than one shower running at a time. We loved the big windows overlooking the river (and all the relative's home across the river) but did not like that there were no blinds to close once it got dark outside around 5 pm. Again, these were some drawbacks but they were not that major. The one thing that I didn't appreciate was that the wifi is restricted to 250MB per day and it's only listed as a small print on a separate paper I received from the owner after I paid and if you go over that limit there is a $10 fee for an extra 250MB. This ended up being a big thing for me because I convinced my wife, which is working on finishing her PhD, to join us at the last moment because the description for this place listed that it had internet and she could do her research and write her dissertation while we were out skiing. She normally goes through gigs per day, so 250MBs didn't cut it. So my next option for her was to make my cell into a hotspot but that didn't work because there is hardly any cell service in a 15miles radius even though the description for this home lists that all cell carriers work in the area especially on the back porch. We found that only AT&T has a week signal there and calls keep dropping due to poor service. This place is great to disconnect from technology and I'm ok with that. I just don't appreciate reading one thing in the description and find out it's not the case. Overall we had a blast on the mountain skiing.
Our getaway was a group of 10 friends from Kentucky and Maryland, and Buckhannon just happened to be halfway between. The cabin was remote (it would be very tricky in the snow), with poor cell reception, which was actually just fine with us because it made the trip more of a getaway from the busyness of life. It slept 10 comfortably, and the living area/kitchen were great! The navigation app "Waze" found the cabin just fine, and comes highly recommended. The weather was cold during our visit, so we didn't get to take advantage of some of the outdoors space much, but it would be even better in the summer! The only downsides were the showers (fluctuating hot/cold constantly and one had a poor showerhead) and the lack of nearby hiking, but it made for a very fun trip.
We loved spending our Thanksgiving there! It's snowed the very first day we came in and we had so much fun. All of the neighbors were very friendly and even though you have people nearby, it is very exclusive. Her kitchen is fully stocked with the utensils that we needed in order to cook a big Thanksgiving dinner. The only complaint that I would have would be that the garden tub hot water did not work and there was no working Internet while we were there but other than that everything was great.
What a memorable week of family vacation!!!!!!!!! The house was very nice and accommodating with a well-stocked kitchen (just make sure the refrigerator door is pushed shut tight :) Lannette was prompt in answering questions, neighbors Butch & Connie and Ed & Sandy, and George's EMT Brother (sorry, we forget his first name) were super nice and hospitable!! The Grandchildren enjoyed playing in the low river and under the deck with all the toys! If you're into 4-wheeling, this is the place to go; and if the saying 'you're not having fun unless someone gets hurt' is true then this family had a ton of fun!!!!! The local Emergency Personnel are superb; from experience, we know!! Despite the major injuries, our family enjoyed a wonderful week together and look forward to sometime going back again!!!!!!!!! We encourage other families as well to go to Buckhannon River cottage for a special family time together!! And, make sure you visit the Sugar Shack! Thank you, George & Lannette, for sharing your delightful cottage with others!! God's Blessings on ALL!!! .........The Shelly Family
We loved our stay at the house. The open floor plan was perfect for all 10 of us to visit. The kitchen was well equipped for us to make a big dinner Saturday night. It was so warm we ate dinner outside. All of us could fit around the large deck table. Ir was most impressed with how quiet the rooms were. Some members of our group snore loudly and I couldn't hear any of them during the night! The sheets, towels, and blankets were of good quality and smelled fresh. It was all the comforts of home.
Since we were visiting our son at West Virginia Wesleyan, we spent most of our time at the campus and driving back and forth to Buckhannon. The trip took about half an hour one way. The roads were windy and we saw lots of deer. Even though it was far, it was so much more fun than a hotel. It was a fantastic trip!
My boys and I had a great time. It was a great get away. Environment was perfect. Very Clean. I would recommend to my friends with dogs. We enjoyed the golfing and fishing in the area.
Note: We did not like the dogs that ran lose. Twice when we were outside by fire they came over. And late at night and early morning they would bark. as you are a wear we were looking for quiet getaway due to sons illness. And the morning we left, I went outside to put stuff in truck and there were four dogs next to my truck that startled me at 5:30 am.
West Virginia Wildlife Center at French Creek is a short drive and the Swiss Village of Helvetia is about 30 minutes away and The Hutte Restaurant is world famous for its Sunday brunch. Audra State Park is a short drive as well.
