Bill Watford purchased this house in 2007
My wife's mother lived in this house for 20 years and now she lives with us. We purchased the property from her in 2007. She originally chose this home because of its location in a peaceful neighborhood and proximity to historic downtown full of locally-owned shops and restaurants. It is also only 3 miles away from the beautiful St. Johns River.
Inside, the home is laid out like two suites each with bedroom and bathroom. Adjacent to the living area is a screened patio that faces the landscaped private fenced backyard, a relaxing place for morning coffee or tea. The whole property is designed around comfort and quietness.
I had the opportunity to stay at Grandma's Place during Biketoberfest 2016. The house was amazingly clean and well kept. Bill did a great job preparing the place before I arrived, even the yard was surprisingly clean after Hurricane Matthew had just went through town three days earlier. I even surprised Bill and arrived a couple of hours early and he was gracious enough to let us check in early. The house is in a great location in a quite neighborhood and was the perfect starting point for a day on the bike. Everything seemed to be in great working order and the house is a very good size. If you are looking for a place in close proximity to beaches and other attractions, without being located in all the hustle and bustle, I wouldn't hesitate to pick this one.
Watford’s Grandma's Place was a good choice for us. My Middle School aged son and I wanted to explore the Orlando Area without visiting the theme parks. We found that there is plenty to do besides go to those overcrowded, overpriced, and often disappointing venues. Grandma's place was a clean, quiet and comfortable refuge at the end of each day. DeLand itself isn't the most exciting town on the map but we enjoyed visiting the Reptile Discovery Center during a demonstration, and would recommend it over the Stetson Mansion. We also went bass fishing, took an airboat ride through a swamp, rented a jet ski at Daytona Beach, spent an afternoon zip lining, lit off some (legal) fireworks, and swam in a couple of the local freshwater springs.
Grandma's has full amenities including AC and a washer/drier. The only reason I don't give five stars are that a few things weren't working:
(1) we checked in advance and were informed that we could stream Netflix via the "BluRay DVD player" but when we arrived there there was a standard DVD player that couldn't stream Netflix. This was corrected the next morning.
(2) That's when I discovered that the coffee maker wasn't working. The response was that it was brand new, but in fact the letters were worn off so that seems highly unlikely - they must have been confused. They brought a replacement that took different filters than the ones that were at Grandma's so in the end I didn't end up using it.
(3) Then we went to put a frozen pizza in the oven only to find out that it wasn't working, either, though the stove top worked fine. At that point I just gave up and decided to roll with it - no point getting stressed out over little things when you're on vacation.
Overall the good significantly outweighed the bad, the price was fair and the owners were responsive and a pleasure to deal with. Recommended.
Grandma's house was exactly as described. It was perfectly located for us. It was clean, well stocked and a wonderful place to stay.
The house is located in a quite neighborhood and was very clean and well stocked. The two bedrooms were large (one, extra large) each with its own bathroom.
Bill was very helpful. My wife lost a ring in the yard that would not have been found without the metal detector that Bill rounded-up. Also, we left a couple of items behind that Bill promptly mailed to us after our departure.
Loved spending a few days in Florida with this house as a base. The home was very clean and extremely well stocked - from linens to pantry items! The owners were great to work with! The fenced back yard had beautiful flowering shrubs that allowed for a relaxing time using the screened patio space. The neighborhood was very quiet and we felt quite safe. We explored from Daytona Beach to Ocala. Loved eating at the Old Spanish Sugar Mill in DeLeon Springs! If the opportunity comes around I will be hoping to stay here again -- I highly recommend. This place was so much better than a hotel room! Donna B.
Great place stay. Two bedrooms two baths great when you have the mother in law with you.
Ideal Location: Enjoy the very best of both old and new Florida without living and sleeping in the crowds and noise. From visiting the famous Daytona Beach, kayaking in the St Johns River, taking a trip to Disney or Seaworld, swimming with the Manatees at Blue Springs or Ponce De Leon Springs, renting a House Boat at Hontoon, surfing at New Smryna, choosing between 3 nearby water parks, to strolling Historic Downtown Deland, each day can be a new adventure. Enjoy!
