Description

Photos and Description of this 5 bedroom holiday estate in Vicksburg - Featherston-Magruder Estate

Old World Elegance! Spectacular 5 Bedroom 1830 Greek Revival Home

Constructed in 1831, Richard Featherston, a teacher, built a single story structure here and opened Vicksburg's first school. Dr. Alex Magruder, the great grandson of an indentured servant who arrived in Virginia from Scotland in 1653 expanded the house to two stories in 1850 and used the original as a clinic where he treated victims of the 1853 Yellow Fever Outbreak that killed half the population. Sold in 1869 to Nathaniel Thomas, the house was later owned by Tom Morrissey, a steamboat captain and liquor dealer. Built by slaves in the Greek Revival style, the house was remodeled with Italianate features. This Antebellum mansion, once linked to a plantation on the outskirts of Vicksburg, was most recently updated in 2000.

Located at the epicenter of Southern history, the property has easy access to the Civil War national park, a number of historic plantations, as well as a variety of authentic American activities.

The home is one of the first Italianate architecture homes in the US. The home is decorated with period pieces from 1850s and still feels homey despite its 19th century grandeur.

It is surrounded by a range of historic sites dating from the late 1600s thru to the civil rights period of the 1960s such as the Civil War and Natchez Trace National Parks. The property is adjacent to the county jail, as well as to the old courthouse which was where Ulysses S. Grant accepted the surrender of the Confederate Army on July 4th, 1863.

The estate has its own private pool as well as five updated bathrooms with large showers. There are separate caretakers' quarters. The property is situated in the middle of Vicksburg, high on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River Valley, and is within walking distance to many historical sites, restaurants and blues clubs.

Why Carolyn Meyers chose Mississippi

The history of the American South is one of the most important to the development of American Culture, from slavery to Civil Rights. As such, this historically and architecturally significant property provides a perfect means by which to experience the Deep South from a base in Vicksburg, Mississippi, a city whose geographical location along the Mississippi River put it at the center of the cotton industry, the Mississippi Waterway Trade, the economic development of the North, the removal of Native Americans, French and Spanish Colonialism, the Civil War, the Klu Klux Klan, and the Civil Rights struggle for African Americans.

What makes this estate unique

The sweeping staircase and grand parlors, as well as the decorative architectural elements have made this National Historic Register home a rare survivor of time. The rafters still are charred from a roof fire in the Civil War, but the building remains intact and updated. There is a marble fireplace in every room.

Beautiful, well-maintained property

My family stayed here while in town for a memorial service for a family member. The home was well-appointed to host a large family, and we loved being able to spend time together comfortably under one roof. The pool was wonderful as well.

The Place to Stay in Vicksburg for a Larger Group

  • 5 of 5

This home is a stunner! We stayed in this beautiful home for a family reunion. Each room was impeccably decorated. It had just the right mix of elegance but comforts of home. It was the perfect place for family to gather as its great for entertaining. From drinks on the veranda overlooking the sunsets and the river to morning coffee by the pool- this home is great. The kitchen is expansive along with plenty of places to gather too. All of the pictures on VRBO are true representations. It is also centrally located. I cannot imagine a more perfect spot in Vicksburg.

Wonderful place to stay, downtown is walking distance from the property. The beds are comfortable and the house is very spacious. I thoroughly enjoyed the pool and the beautiful sunsets from the front porch.

An amazing journey to the past!

  • 5 of 5

I loved the house, the history, and the warmth of the Southerners. Our hosts were considerate and knowledgeable. The house was elegant, yet, homey. Each room had its own character and decor that matched. It was impeccably clean and had every convenience. It's a great house for a family reunion, friends who would like to travel together, or for a family that wants to explore.

Elegant historic mansion, with modern addition and updated bathrooms and kitchen.

  • 5 of 5

This historic home was a delight to stay in. The beautiful reception and living rooms were elegant and perfect for before and post dinner drinks. The modern library and family rooms, terrific for relaxing in the comfy couch and chairs watching a movie. Nice to have to big screen TVs so the teens could watch their show in the library while adults could take in a Netfix movie in the family room. Bedrooms, wow their size outstanding with the high ceilings and ample closet space plus sitting areas. Lingering around the dinning table a joy, and so elegant with all the feel of the old world. The updated kitchen, with six burner plus grill, viking stove a cooks dream, but I was happy to have the chef prepare the southern style breakfast each morning. Having the chef truly makes a vacation. I throughly enjoyed the three outside seating areas, each so different. Poolside speaks for itself, but the front porch looking down on the historic town of Vicksburg and then across the Mississippi at Louisiana, perfect. The side patio with the large lawn, big trees, and old well made one feel at home in the South. This home was a joy to stay in. My group loved exploring the history, shopping and the food, including the drive through donut shop. We are glad we found this home/estate on VRBO!
