The Detweiler's moved on the family farm in 1965. The Chalet was built in 1976 on the 30 acres of woods on the farm. Ruel and Sara Detweiler are now retired. Our family has recently started to manage the property with our main goal being to keep everything like Ruel and Sara managed it. Our family has been coming to the Detweiler's cabins since 1982; hunting, fishing and enjoying nature. We have so many fond memories of our times spent here and we know that many other families have similar cherished memories here. That's what makes this place so special to so many.
Derek purchased this Cottage in 1976
Why Derek chose Fairview
This is a beautiful place to enjoy all four seasons. In the spring, maple syrup is made from trees on the property, wild flowers, and mushrooms abound in the area. Spring is a good time to view deer, turkey, and migrating birds. Summer is family time for hiking, fishing, swimming, or basking in the Michigan sun. There is time for day trips to Mackinaw Island, or Light Houses along the shore. In the fall, the autumn colors are some of the best in the state. Winter snow and frozen lakes bring joy to skiers, snowmobilers, and ice fisherman. This is also time to enjoy a good book by the crackling fireplace.
What makes this Cottage unique
The Chalet cottage is unique with its fantastic views of the water from the living room and breakfast area. The dishwasher and wood burning fireplace are new to the Chalet this year. The best thing that many enjoy, is the privacy and away- from- it- all feeling that you have when you stay here.

very nice place, quiet, out of the way. could use more cooking utensils with lids to fit and a couple good fry pans, but maybe most folks don't cook while on vacation. The "caretakers" were very helpful and we even caught enough fish for a good fish fry.
Perfect Setting ,Beautiful chalet and grounds. Fully equipped.Great woods to hike. No near neighbors, very quiet.Great get a way from daily grind.
We are so happy you enjoyed your stay at the cabin. We hope you will come back and stay with us again. Hope to host you in the future!
Have a great day!
peaceful end of road cabin
very nice cabin, nice trails to walk dog, deck and firepit awesome. Wish we had more time to relax and enjoy it.
We had an awesome time. I hosted my brothers bachelor party here. The hiking, fishing, row boating, nearby bar, everything was excellent. This was a much needed weekend for all of us. I highly recommend staying at this place if you love the secluded outdoor experience.
Twice as nice!
This was the second year in a row that our family has celebrated my wife’s birthday at the chalet and just like last year we were not disappointed. This is wonderful place to stay and just relax. Thanks again for another fantastic family vacation.
Thank you so much for your review. It is awesome to hear that our guests enjoy the cabins as much as we do. We look forward to hosting you and your family in the future!
This place was exactly what the pictures and reviews said it was. We will 100% be back.
We live in Amish country. They provide the area with unique places of business including a bulk food store with items you don't find in your grocery store, Pioneer Place (unique hardware), Amish furniture, & Health food store.
Deer, Turkey and other wildife can be seen in the woodland and surrounding area and many species of birds make Lori Lane their home.
Field glasses will make bird watching and hiking the mowed trails more interesting.
Nearby are two golf courses, a Pioneer Museum, The AuSable Valley Railroad, horseback riding and canoeing on the AuSable River.
Groomed snowmobile trails, downhill and cross country skiing, elk viewing and more, are only a short drive away.
In the SPRING, melting snow brings maple syrup, wild flowers, and mushrooms. Spring is also the best time for viewing deer, turkey and migrating birds.
SUMMER is family time for hiking, fishing, swimming or basking in the Michigan sun. There is time for day trips to Mackinaw Island, or Light Houses along the shore.
FALL brings Autumn colors (one of the most
colorful spots is right here in Oscoda County), and campfires or quiet frosty mornings to refresh one's spirits after the nonstop rush of summer.
WINTER snow and frozen lakes bring joy to skiers, snowmobilers, and ice fisherman. The young at heart can enjoy a romp in the snow or a good book by the crackling fireplace.
