In a tiny piazza within Perugia’s historic center, Perugia Chocolate occupies a floor of a magnificently preserved medieval palazzo. Wonderfully romantic, this part of town has changed little since the 14th century. This spacious apartment is ideal for those who want to experience the grandeur of a bygone age. The impressive vaulted and frescoed ceilings of Perugia Chocolate are worthy of a museum. A collection of antiques and the two fireplaces create an aura of refinement. The city’s exciting medieval center radiates from Corso Vannucci, 50 yards away. All manner of shopping and dining choices are close at hand. The Italian University of Perugia and the University for Foreigners of Perugia are 300 yards away. On the last weekend of each month, a colorful, outdoor antique market takes place in Piazza Italia, 50 yards away. In July, the Umbria Jazz Festival plays host to the world’s best artist for 10 days. Mid-October brings the Eurochocolate festival that effectively turns Perugia into an open air pastry shop for a week. Parking, bus station and train station are all just a few minutes walk away.

Nice apartment in lovely Perugia
The property, conveniently located just a few blocks from Piazza Quattro Novembre, is in an old building with a lot of character. The apartment interiors are comfortable although the lay out can result somewhat inconvenient: the shower room and toilette are apart. Regarding the toilette, we noticed unpleasant odors from time to time very likely due to the fact that the apartment sites on the lower floor.
The hosts were very caring: we had a basket of fruits and two bottles of wine waiting for us at the apartment. Furthermore, they paid for the taxi from the train station to the apartment and offered to pay the way back! Overall, and leaving behind the issue with the toilette (something that can be fixed), this is a nice apartment for a couple in a perfect location at Perugia.
Winter Stay in Perugia
We spent a week in this apartment in hilltop part of Perugia in early December and found the apartment and location optimal for our explorations of Umbria. As the other review stated Fabio was welcoming and provided wine and fruit. The weather was 38 to 55 degrees F. We may have been the only tourists in Italy and the Italians seemed more natural when compared to our previous summer-time visits.
We found the hot water and heating system to be very good. The bed was extremely comfortable, the living room pretty and relaxing, and the kitchen with table to be adequate for most needs. There is a desk for writing and organizing. Guidebooks and maps of the area are left in the apartment.
The apartment is on the first floor and since our previous stay was in a Cinque Terra look-out, up 138 steps, the lower floor was appreciated. There is no view, but there are several windows for light and ventilation. The apartment is in an extremely old, all stone, portion of the city, within the city's defensive walls. It is located at the end of the city nearest the city plaza where the taxi, bus, and parking connections are located. The universities are at the other end of the old city.
Perugia is quite a large city and the wall-in old town is quite large too compared to Assisi, Montepulciano, and the Tuscany towns. Perugia has to be the most difficult city I have ever driven in. Long one-way hill-side streets sprouting off of 7-exit round-abouts means that you will drive for miles trying to find your way back, even with a GPS. But we hung in there after renting a car for a few days to visit Cortona, Assisi, and Montipulciano. The new town area of Perugia is mostly business oriented. The train station where the rental car offices are located easily accessed via the mini-metro.
The clothes and gift shopping in old-town Perugia is high-end. The city hall, town square, and church are impressive. There are 2 Coop type food stores close by. There are a few expensive restaurants and many low and medium end restaurants catering to students. Many Kodak-moments in Perugia: especially the sunsets viewed from behind the City Plaza, and the stone buildings, city walls, and staircases. Fabio was appreciative of our comments and genuinely wanted to keep the apartment at high standards for future visitors. He even dropped us off at the train station--a welcomed end to a great stay.
Wonderful Apartment in an Ideal Location
This apartment is so beautiful! It's perfect for a short or long stay. We were there only 5 days but long enough to get an accurate feel for this home. First, the owner, Fabio is unbelievably kind, helpful and accommodating. We drove and he met us at the edge of town so we followed him to the apartment. He had a big bottle of water, a fruit basket, two bottles of wine, juice, adapters, everything we could need waiting for us. He also helped us park the car in one of the lots and assisted us with buying a parking pass then took us from the lot back to the apartment so we would know how to get there. He even let us check out late since he didn't have anyone checking in the day we left. What can I say? I've never experienced such an accommodating host. Grazie Fabio!!
The apartment is decorated with a perfect mix of antiques and modern pieces and has been renovated so there is a nice big shower. The ceiling is amazing. Gorgeous fresco! Fabio has done an excellent job making this space beautiful yet perfectly functional. The pictures do not do it justice. I would highly recommend this apartment.
The town, the apartment, and the owner are fabulous! The Perugia area and Umbria have so much to offer, and the apartment is perfectly located for exploring it on foot, by train, by bus. Spacious, wonderfully furnished, and well-outfitted lodgings. While the décor tells you that you’re in Italy, you also have all the amenities to be comfortable, do your laundry, and prepare a great pasta dinner. Owner Fabio is incredibly accommodating-- transporting you from and to bus/train/airport at your arrival and departure, providing information on local events and activities, and happily responding whenever your contact him with a question or concern.
Ospiti estremamente gentili. Alla loro partenza l'appartamento era molto pulito e in ordine. Tutto assolutamente perfetto. Spero di avere presto l'occasione di ospitarli ancora!
"This is a lovely, spacio...
"This is a lovely, spacious apartment perfectly placed in the centro storico and very quiet. Fabio was there to meet us at the airport and gave us a helpful tour of the city. He also provided free museum cards, a huge bowl of fruit, red & white wine, water, milk, honey, jam & Nutella! All very welcoming. The apartment is full of fascinating antiques and the ceilings in every room are amazing. Perugia is very beautiful and perfectly placed for exploring other parts of Umbria (Assisi is easily reached by bus or car). At the end of a very happy stay, Fabio drove us back to the airport. Molto grazie, Fabio, per una settimana fantastica!"
"We had a wonderful stay ...
"We had a wonderful stay thanks to the kindness of Fabio and his family. We were welcomed at the station by Fabio who oriented us to the local area. The apartment was wonderfully clean, there was wine, water, chocolate and basic foddstuffs to start us off. Later Fabio''s father dropped in some wild asparagus. The apartment was within 5 - 20 minutes walking of all the Perugean attractions and we used it as a base to explore Umbria. A wonderful stay. We would recommend it to friends and will hasten back ourselves. Ciao."
Perugia is a city where art, history and culture have always been given a charm. Walking in the beautiful streets of the old town is like reading a book, seems to be able to perceive sounds and scents of a past world but still alive. A refined beauty, authentic and unspoiled as it continues its path in the numerous museums: the National Gallery of Umbria, the National Archaeological Museum, the Etruscan Well, the San Bevignate are just some examples of time travel through art that will certainly etched in the hearts and minds of visitors. The beauty of the city of Perugia is certainly enhanced by a wonderful soundtrack made of concerts of classical music, opera, pop and jazz. Musical events of great intensity, which come to life in exceptional location where listening rediscovers its deepest sense. Every year later, during the month of July, for 10 days the city is completely enveloped in the music. A magical atmosphere, where sounds and colors punctuate the most anticipated event of the year: Umbria Jazz.
