Why Cynthia and Walter Davis chose Hatteras Island

The Beach Box is located one lot from the ocean. Beach access is adjacent to the cottage with a short walk over the dunes. A great value for the location alone.

Ice Cream truck drive-by every evening in season.

What makes this cottage unique

The newly built decks allow for leisurely evenings enjoying the ocean/sound breezes. The top deck allows you to take in the beautiful night sky often catching a glimpse of a falling star. Views of the sound and ocean from the top deck.

Cute Cottage With a Bit of An Ocean View

  • 5 of 5

Stayed here with my family and mom. Plenty of room for the 6 of us! Loved the two decks; wonderfully shady and breezy on the lower deck, and gorgeous sunsets and sunrises on the upper deck. You can even see a little bit of ocean beyond the dunes, and you can hear it, too! Quiet neighborhood, and a short, pretty walk to the beach. Great countertop space in the kitchen for cooking or take-out spreads, and the washer/dryer was a blessing! Cynthia was prompt and friendly in all our correspondence. Very grateful we found this house for our vacation this year!

Mixed emotions

  • 3 of 5

We looked very hard for a last minute vacation home that got excellent reviews...that was our number one priority. Therefore, we skipped the newer and more updated houses that got poor ratings due to the rental management. Our stay could have been so wonderful and everything that this hardworking family paid for. The house itself is in the most convenient spot in The Colony, with beach access only steps away. Salvo's beach was amazing and uncrowded. The ice cream truck was a hit with the kids, and we didn't mind the distance to Avon too much. The directions given at check-in were helpful.

However, our treatment since the power outage exactly one week ago has been infuriating. I understand it's a financial burden to be losing income, but we lost half of our vacation that we paid for, and now I'm angry. If I promised someone a photography session and my camera broke halfway, I would not charge them for a full session, and I sure would've not ignored the situation. We tried to stick it out as long as we could, without AC (and the house IS extremely hot without it), a way to cook our food, spoiling food in the fridge, and no directives on what to do. We found out everything via Twitter and the internet when we could charge our phones in the car. Anyway- some sort of acknowledgemt during this emergency would've been thoughtful. To not respond after a week is ridiculous. I wasn't going to mention that there was coffee still left in the pot and that the top bunk was damp and smelled like urine when my kids climbed up for bed. The management company was extremely responsive and apologetic when we called about the bed and the oven handle falling off. They even shipped back a drawer of clothes we left. They're working hard. But they're not in charge of reservations. If you'd asked me before the power went out, I would have booked this house every summer and looked past anything else. No response is just not the way to treat a customer, and our extended family was so sad at the way this was handled, even if there was no chance of a refund--no response at all??

Owner's Response: Stacie, Thank you for your kind words about your stay in my cottage - yes, it is a great location especially when vacationing with kids - one lot away from the ocean! And I might add, it is a great value! The power outage accident on Hatteras Island and Ocracoke was very unfortunate for the vacationers and those people who make their livelihoods on these islands. CHEC, Dare County, and the management company were professional and expedient in notifying all renters of the evacuation of both islands. This incident was way beyond anyone's control, i.e. more like a 'dry hurricane' is the phrase that's being touted! I received your response through VRBO that you were happy with the cottage and that you opted for an early departure on Thursday while the Hatteras Island evacuation was slated for Saturday morning. I'm truly sorry for the inconvenience this situation had on your family and your vacation plans. However, I would strongly suggest in the future that the best way of being covered in these situations is to purchase some means of travelers insurance. There are unforeseen and unfortunate accidents like this that are basically out of ones control. I understand you had 2 issues with the cottage and am happy that they were addressed by the management company expediently and to your satisfaction. Again, I'm sorry for the inconvenience this caused your family. I do hope you will consider Hatteras Island in your future vacation plans - it's truly a great place! And thank you for staying with us and for your review. Stacie, I sent you an insurance claim form to recoup monies from the PCL accident. Hopefully you have submitted it and are being compensated for your loss of vacation time. Cynthia Davis

First time to the OBX was fantastic.

  • 5 of 5

We were a party of 10 and the property met all the needs of 10 people. The washer dryer combo was certainly a real cost, time, and packing saver. The dishwasher was also a bonus. We went for the beach and the experience of Hattereas Island and we were sold, will definitely visit again. The owners of the property were nice and polite. If your looking for decent, clean, and affordable housing this house will be a good fit for you.

Beach house was great.

  • 5 of 5

Beach house had everything that was needed .Didn't care too much for the outside grill. Not really made for the grilling, I like to do on vacation. I would stay there again.

Owner's Response: William, I am happy you had a good vacation in the OBX. Yes, I do understand your concerns about the grill however, due to the salt air any other type of grill would just rust. Also, the inground grill is a safety feature - grilling on the decks is prohibited. I have no objection to renters bringing their own grills as long as they do the grilling away from the cottage on ground level. Thank you for taking the time to write this review and I hope to see you back at The Beach Box soon.

Close proximity to the beach!

  • 5 of 5

This was perfect for our family- 4 adults and 3 children. The decks are really nice and the close proximity to the beach was great- 5 to 10 min walk depending on how much you're carrying and if you have small children who are walking too. Cynthia was really prompt in getting back to me with any questions I had in preparing for our trip. We had plenty of space, too. The beach was really nice- not very crowded. Salvo is a great little town, not commercialized. Thank you Cynthia for a great trip-- our first trip to the Outer Banks! We hope to return sometime.

Great vacation

  • 4 of 5

We are so enjoying our vacation. The house was very clean when we arrived. Love that it is just a short walk to the beach and conveniently located to fresh seafood market. We've enjoyed cooking seafood every night. My four legged friends love the beach in the morning and late evening.

The kitchen well stocked with anything you may need. The convenience of a washer and dryer means you don't have to bring a lot. Plenty of room in the home and the two decks are awesome. Very happy with our rental
