Cosy 2 bed cottage, close to the beach and mountains, and wonderful wildlife
Cornhill is a traditional stone cottage situated in the village of Talmine on the west side of the Kyle of Tongue, Sutherland. That’s in the middle at the very top of Scotland! The cottage is comfortable and well equipped, and sleeps four adults (1 double, 1 twin). There is one bathroom, a well equipped kitchen with range cooker, and sitting room with TV/DVD. It is a 10 minute walk from the beach, and just 200m from the village shop/post office which stocks a good range of fresh and frozen food, and other essentials. Further local amenities (bank, fuel etc.) are available in Tongue, approximately 5 miles away.
Please note I very much value having personal communication with my guests. I am happy to answer any queries, and will endeavor to make your holiday amazing!
(And, unfortunately, there is no wifi available at the cottage, but internet access is possible in some local hotels and cafés.)

About Sarah Bird
I grew up in Cheshire, and currently live in a cottage in rural North Wales. I currently work for the UK's best zoo, on conservation projects in Britain, and am thrilled to have links with projects on wildcats and pine martens in Scotland. I love all things wild and natural, that's why I love northern Scotland.
Sarah Bird purchased this Cottage in 1980
Why Sarah Bird chose Talmine
I have been visiting Cornhill for over 30 years now, it is my favourite place, and I still find new experiences each time i visit! I have climbed Ben Loyal and Ben Hope many times, and know the coast very well. My interest in wildlife was stimulated there, and my dream to work in conservation definitely started there. I particularly love the wild flowers - Scottish primrose is a delight, and there are many orchids in the summer. Its also a good place to see eagles - both species! I now visit Cornhill at least twice a year, to look after the cottage and also to refresh and recharge my batteries. If you need to get away from it ALL this is the place!
What makes this Cottage unique
Cornhill is special because of the clean air, the amazing - constantly changing - views of sea and mountains, the long summer days, the northern lights (if you are lucky!), and dark starry skies... The nature is just amazing, and the community is very friendly. The lack of internet can also be seen as a positive!!

Cozy cottage with splendid views
Our stay at the cottage was amazing, we loved the kittchen with the traditional stove and spent most of the nights sitting around the table in the kittchen and enjoying a glass of wine. The views of over the Kyle are splendid and we had lovely weather throughout our stay to explore the wild and stunningly beautiful coastline. Given that the caretaker lives right next door, we felt comfortably in case we needed any assistance. Sarah also very much helped us out since we booked the cottage at short notice. We hope we can return soon to this amazing place! Best wishes, David
Thank you David, i am so glad you enjoyed your stay, and i hope you are able to visit Talmine again soon.
Fabulous cottage in a stunning location
A lovely well kept cottage equipped with everything you need with views that you will be hard pressed to beat. The village has a handy shop and post office, a lovely beach and nice walks and places to potter round without having to bother with the car. Tongue is only a five minute drive away and we alternated days spent locally with days visiting attractions further afield such as Smoo Cave and Duncansby Head Stacks. The flowers and wildlife were fabulous and we saw minke whale in the bay and apparently there had been a pod of orca the week before. Highly recommended!
Cornhill Cottage - comfortable, spacious and a great location.
Cornhill Cottage is located on a very quiet little lane in Talmine overlooking lovely Talmine Bay with its sandy beach, harbour and great seascape views towards the Rabbit Islands.
The cottage is spacious with two upstairs bedrooms, it has a good bathroom, utility room. a comfortable sitting room and cosy kitchen/breakfast room with an oil fired Sandyford cooker (similar to an Aga) that provides background warmth as well as doing the cooking.
Out of the front of the cottage there is a nice pretty little garden to sit in specially with an early cup of tea as the sun rises.
Very close by (2 minutes walk) there is the convenience of Tom's village shop/post office which stocks everything you will need for your stay.
The location of the cottage is ideal for coastal walking without the need to get in the car. There is a lovely walk to Port Vasgo in one direction and to Skinnet Ard and Skinnet beach in the other, with beautiful views of the Kyle of Tongue and Ben Loyal in the distance.
All in all a great place to stay if you want to explore this part of Scotland.
Stunningly beautiful sea views from the doorstep
My wife and I spent a week in Talmine exploring the natural world. There are several beaches, mountains and coastal walks within easy reach or a short drive from the cottage. The local shop/post office supplies essentials and are served by a friendly, humorous shopkeeper/postmaster.The decor and facilities are accurately portrayed on the website and the cottage exudes warmth and homeliness. Given the cold weather we really enjoyed the constant warmth of the AGA type stove which we found easy to use and adds to the traditional feel of the cottage. Most appealing is the uninterrupted views from the cottage out to sea. The caretaker only lives next door and although we had no need to approach them it was reassuring to know they were on hand if required. I would definitely recommend the cottage and hope to return again very soon.
Thank you for your review, I am so glad you had an amazing holiday. The wildife can be stunning in winter, especially the birds, and its often the best time to see otters. I am so pleased the cottage was warm and welcoming for you, and hope you are able to return to Cornhill cottage soon. Best regards, Sarah
Thank you for your helpful review. I am glad that you had a good holiday despite the problems. We are visiting the cottage next week and will investigate the issues you have raised.
Drying washing is always a challenge when poor weather prevents use of the outside washing line. We have found the using the internal drying rack in the porch, or in the kitchen over night works best.
I will provide a further update after our visit.
Sehr schöne Aussicht, gemütliches Häuschen
Gut eingerichtet, alles vorhanden. Sehr freundliche Gastgeber. Wunderschöne Aussicht! Vielen Dank!
At Cornhill you really do get away from it all! The countryside and wildlife are fantastic and the scenery is breath-taking. It is an ideal holiday destination if you enjoy walking and wildlife, or just want to recharge in a peaceful and beautiful place, collecting unforgettable memories and amazing photographs. There are many lovely quiet beaches close by.
Please note I very much value having personal communication with my guests. I am happy to answer any queries myself, and will endeavor to make your holiday amazing!
