The cottage is located on the canal leading to the Gulf of Mexico and great fishing. The 1940's home is remodeled, with a fully equipped kitchen, dining area, living room, laundry, two bedrooms with queen sized beds (both are Beauty Rest, one is less than a year old), and a large bathroom with tiled shower. The house is comfortable and should provide all you need for your stay. Wood deck all around provides star gazing and cool breezes. The Lower Suwannee River Management area is a quick 15 minute drive and provides unspoiled beauty.
I am originally from Florida and grew up on the salt water. I recently found an old 8mm movie of me rowing a dinghy when I was 3 years old, although it was tied to the shore of the Anclote River. I lived in this house in Horseshoe Beach for 18 years; I now live in my childhood home on the river.
Ramona purchased this house in 1996
The house is located on a canal with easy access to the Gulf of Mexico and some of the best fishing in Florida. Having lived here for 18 years, the home is designed and equipped to be lived in - not simply a place to stay.
Horseshoe Beach is one of the few remaining towns along the Gulf Coast that is still quaint, quiet, and laid back. The fishing, both inshore and offshore is great. Dixie County has approximately 40 miles of coastline with only 1 mile in private ownership; the rest is sawgrass and salt marshes.
The Cottage on the Canal is a cute, comfortable place to stay. My only recommendation would be for the owner, Ramona to look at replacing some of the boards on her deck and also the railing. The railing is loose and if a lot of weight would be put on it, something bad could happen. Overall the cottage has that feeling of home and is well taken care of.
"Ramona's Hideaway" fit our needs for a landing spot as we were under a mandatory evacuation order due to Hurricane Matthew. The property was clean and had almost everything we needed for the two days riding out the storm. Our thanks to Ramona for taking us in with our three cats—who were a bit spooked to be away from home, but weathered the storm well.
If you're accustomed to following the news and staying in touch via TV, smart phones and tablets, you will be disappointed with Horseshoe Beach, which only has Verizon phone service, (we have AT&T) and sketchy AT&T wifi that went in and out during our stay. On top of that the property had no television reception so we were unable to follow the news to see what was happening on the east coast, where our home is located.
If you're looking for a quiet spot away from the hustle and bustle of city life, or a place to go fishing, Horseshoe Beach is perfect for you. Otherwise, there's very little to do here, and the closest restaurant is seven miles away. Still, we enjoyed the down time, caught up on our reading, although worried about what was happening back home. Luckily, we found no damage to our home when we returned. So all's well that ends well.
Had a great weekend visiting with my son and grandson, a little older but really enjoyed. We didnt think about the weather on our way didnt realize there was a storm, so spent most of our weekend inside. Would go back for sure.
We had such a great time we will be back next summer. Nice to have the boat in the backyard saved so much time and effort having to load and unload. Just can't say enough about this place. Thanks so much Ramona.
We stayed two nights at Ramona's house. Everything was great! It was easy to access, and her directions were very clear. The home was clean and had everything we needed. We spent lots of time downstairs enjoying the breeze and visiting with family. We could bring the boat right up the canal and to the house for breaks in between scalloping trips, which was very handy. We would definitely stay again!
Great place to go if you are looking to get away from the crowd. The fishing was excellent and the one local restaurant had delicious seafood. If being 20miles from the nearest town with no tv or wifi or cell signal unless you have Verizon does not bother you then this is the out of the way place for you. The locals call it the last frontier and you will agree once you have spent the week here.
