Mixed feelings -
First of all, we totally loved our amazing hosts Marie Jo and Jean Paul, who made us feel right at home and who were very helpful with recommendations for the area. We also loved this gorgeous gated country estate location, which is very private and features lush landscaping and lots of birdlife, including doves with their own dovecote. The property is also very quiet, yet close to Nimes, shopping and many very rewarding day trips. We have a hard time making any criticism but we feel there is some room for improvement.
The apartment is ground level and spacious, however in some ways not completely comfortable. It is built into a hillside, with windows only on two sides, and we found it was constantly damp (from absorbing moisture from the rock walls?). A dehumidifier would be useful. A bigger problem, the bathroom had a strong unpleasant odor from both shower and sink drains - we found there was no "S" trap under the sink and probably none beneath the shower either, so sewer gases were not contained. There were some strongly scented air fresheners but they were not very effective in hiding the smell. It was only when we searched and found a shower drain plug and sink plug that these odors finally disappeared. (So it can be done!)
While we were there, it was also quite hot, and we did not discover a fan (inside a corner closet) until late in our stay.
Also, we were surprised the TV is about the size of a computer screen - even though we don't watch a lot of TV while we travel, we would have preferred a larger screen and perhaps a couple English channels (or Netflix or DVD's) to relax in the evening. The kitchen is fully equipped but a few full size wine glasses would have been appreciated. The cupboards have some sundry food items left by previous guests but things appear haphazard.
Finally, the contract provided specified a 40 euro cleaning fee and we paid it even though we had done the dishes and otherwise made things neat and tidy. It was only later that I noticed on the VRBO listing that the 40 euro fee is payable if the renters do not do it themselves. More clarity on arrival as to what is expected would be helpful.
All in all, this is a first class property with wonderful, very helpful hosts. The only thing we could ask for is a bit more attention to detail.
The perfect place for a Nimes exploration
Our stay at Le Baradot was a real treat. Marie Jo and Jean Paul were wonderful hosts; so friendly, warm and welcoming. The Gite is in a private courtyard attached to the house. It is spacious, beautifully decorated and has everything you could possibly want. The gardens are truly lovely and we enjoyed sitting in our courtyard surveying the beautiful surrounds. Le Baradot is quiet and peaceful and we would highly recommend it for a visit to Nimes and the surrounding area.
Characterful pretty gite, in beautiful gardens
The gite was easy to find with the directions we were given, is central for a lot of attractions and was bright, clean and comfortable. Marie-jo and Jean-Paul had themselves just come back from a holiday, and were very welcoming and gave us lots of details of where to go, what to see and how to get there. We loved sitting out in the cool of the evenings - hearing the doves, and watching the ariel acrobatics of the swallows and later in the evening the bat display. The gardens were ideal for taking the dog around and along the road was more open space. Unfortunately we had not done our homework and did not realise temperatures in the Nimes area would be as high in June - mid 30's - we found apart from walking around the bambouserie (shaded) which was well worth seeing, it was too hot for us and the dog, walking around the city or driving during the day, so we left for home and cooler climes earlier than we had planned. We were very sad to leave such a little oasis, but we should have planned our holiday for earlier or later in the year, (April or October). I would recommend the gite wholeheartedly and couldn't fault the service or welcome.
We stayed here for 4 nights and absolutely loved it. The place surrounded by a gorgeous garden and its owners were fantastic. We had no issues finding the place. It was perfect for an easy in and out for day trips to Arles, Avignon, Aix-en-Provance, Nimes, Uzes, Pont du Gard, etc. Our family enjoyed the stay and highly recommend it.
Beautiful, quiet getaway, with wonderful hosts!
We loved our stay with the charming Marie Josee and her helpful and always cheerful husband, Jean Paul. Our roomy apartment felt like a villa, with gorgeous gardens off our patio and around the property. It was very private, yet easy to contact our wonderful hosts. You do need a car (and there's easy parking!), as it's 20-30 minutes from downtown Nimes. It is well located for seeing the unusual Camarque, the Cevennes (mountains) and the amazing Pont du Gard. Our hosts helped us decide where to go and were very helpful in guiding us there. It was a wonderful, even romantic, getaway to which we will return if we are in the area again. We recommend it highly!
