When the Wild West was at its wildest and Queen Victoria ruled far and wide, a wealthy man from the north bought a quiet corner of Florida coast as his humble holiday retreat. Simple both in name and design, The Hut would become the man’s family vacation spot for generations to come. Chosen for its natural surrounds and beachside serenity, this historic property promises your family just what Thomas Mellon enjoyed in the 1880s: ideal quality time, the good life, no distractions.
Few American families can boast an ancestral home dating to 1892, least of all one just steps from the beach in easy view of dolphins and whales and sea turtles. This makes The Hut - and the chance to call it your own for any length vacation - such an amazing treat. Mellon’s great-great-grandson, with a recall to shame any average family man, knows exactly which ancestor added what to The Hut. (Thank his grandparents for the fireplace, with the stones taken from the family beach).
This little away-from-it-all is cute and cosy. It’s a lovely place for even your mother-in-law should you rent The Hut in tandem with the larger Lodge next door. Three bedrooms comprise two queen beds and a kids’ room with two twins. All guests share a bathroom and a galley kitchen is available - though you’ll likely gravitate to barbecues and beach picnics. Even the pickiest kids will love eating fish they helped to catch.
Both sunrise and sunset are on offer to those with stamina, with all range of options available in between morning coffee and evening gin and tonic. This is ambiance with a capital A. Kids will go crazy to see porpoises just off shore and the handsome landscaping is a haven for creative spirits - write your novel, try your hand at painting or just finish a well-thumbed book, topped off with a good nap. Even chores take on a new light while at The Hut. Laundry facilities are open-air, the washing machine is outside and clothes dry in no time on the line - ‘going green’ has never had a better view.
This isn’t the ‘drag-them-to-Florida-and-count-down-to-Disney-World’ vacation. Nor does it cater to 21st century kids hiding inside with video games. Instead, try endless board games by hurricane lamp and fresh seafood barbecued nightly. Books and beach walks - turn off Facebook and recall the things that count.
Built for a cool, comfortable and quiet existence - this home boasts original treats from way-back-when before air conditioning. Mellon’s descendants opted recently to leave the original pine wood floor as is, rather than deleting generations of scuffs and paint marks. Such floor-to-ceiling history is easy to revel in.
Recent updates provide modern convenience (air conditioning and cable TV), to be indulged or ignored as you fancy. Whether renting just The Hut or The Lodge as well, both properties make an other-worldly retreat where families gather to forget the stress of modern life. This year, vacation together and enjoy the good life. Where recent times have caused people to simplify and quieten - for the planet, our wallets and our sanity - The Hut is the happy answer.
Note: Summer Haven is constantly changing with nature. The SummerHaven river behind the house is largely a sand dune and can many times provide beach access. Due to Tropical Storm Faye erosion at the front, there is now an area of large boulders blocking the beach access points. Although you can walk in between these boulders to access the beach like the locals that live near by, the nearest easy beach access is approximately 1 mile north at Fort Mantanzas National Park. It has (free) paved parking and provides beach access via a meandering boardwalk through the park.

This was our second time staying in this rental and we will never be back. The first time, the house was in good shape and we didn't expect it to be modern as the house is historical and many years old. Regardless, it was in good working order and we had a nice time. This time around, however, we were extremely displeased with our experience. The house is falling apart. There are leaks everywhere, the beds are in terrible shape and made for several nights of restless sleep, the living room furniture is absolutely disgusting and smells like urine. I am so sad our stay was nowhere near the one we experienced here five years ago. I don't know what has changed, with regard to management of the property, but whomever is responsible has failed miserably. We will absolutely not be staying here again.
Completely fallen down around you. Manager stated it was the description. Sad for such a historic place to see it in such despair. I sent pictures and Emails but nothing was done. Windows broken, furniture peeling, porch covered in junk and trash. Lights out, air unit had a bucket propped to collect water which needed to be emptied several times a day. Shower curtain covering dining room table, refrigerator leaks water.....on and on. So incredibly sad. I was looking for my Birthday rental for next year and saw the "Hut" in my search.... same deceiving pictures from article written in 2002. Other than the horrible situation the home is in If it were fixed it would be a perfect vacation spot for people looking for history... this is more like delapitated
We recently stayed for a week at The Hut in Summer Haven. What a peaceful time it was! We like to stay at less than perfect places since many others won't and the price is more in our range. It is very rustic, especially the bathroom. It was clean, but there are a number of repairs that need to be done (broken window with a magazine cover as a replacement, three burners on an older electric stove with a fourth that was sparking, hinges on the kitchen window need replacing). The location makes up for most of those. We didn't need the air conditioning, but it looks like a few of the units need some attention. We had a wonderful week weather-wise and wished we could stay longer. Someday.....
Had a great vacation at the Hut. Was not able to check in at 4pm due to housekeeping still finishing up. Everything is exactly like pictured and fit our family of 3n adults and two dogs perfect. We walked behind the house in the dried up river bed to have access to the beach less than 200 feet. The hurricane wiped out about 6 beach houses so the beach is almost a private beach with a lot of sea shells to pick up. We would rent this hut again, had a great view of the ocean from the top deck, we seen pelicans, dolphins, etc.. The grocery store is about 10 minutes up the road.
We had a great beach vacation for two with a few bumps. The Hut is a 1880 historic property on the ocean, so don't expect perfection but do enjoy charm. We would actually stay here again. Air Conditioning is MANY portable units, the noise is not what I want on vacation and we spent the first hour mopping water since a drain failed. Storms have really taken a toll and took out the paved road out front so access is difficult and rocky(I fell) and sand has completely filled in the river in the rear. It is weird to see boat docks sitting on sand. The bath is dingy and no curtain on exterior door you have to pass in middle of night. Our biggest disappointment was we were without power for most of one day and it took numerous calls to rental company before they finally called power company (like I asked 6 hours earlier. Then it took hours to repair, but the power repair guys were wonderful (Transformer was blown). The deck up top is great for beach and pelican watching. The porch has great shady spots to enjoy a book. Turtles all around the lovely landscaping. Ghosts at no extra charge. Overall a good vacation choice, but given issues I do think is overpriced somewhat.
Our family had a wonderful time here at the hut during the day we would site see and enjoy the beach with the kids and the family dog the kids would fish while I enjoyed the view which I may add is spectacular and the wild life is amazing we saw dolphins, birds, tortoises and more at night we would enjoy dinning with the sound of the ocean right outside your window if your looking to reconnect with the family this is an awesome place to do that.
