Why Sue Johnson chose Makena
My parents built this home in 1969, when the only access was a dirt road. They lived here year round, but had no mail or paper delivery for many years. Its a lovely, quiet location in a pristine area, which my husband and I regularly update, and keep decorated in the Hawaiian style.
What makes this House unique
Snorkeling, turtle and whale viewing (in winter months) is awesome from our location. We can also swim off the left front side of our property. Our oceanfront location with sunset views overlooking 3 islands and 2 peninsulas is truly unparalleled.
No Parties, Weddings or Gatherings Allowed. Quiet Hours 9pm-8am
100% refund for cancellations more than 60 days before check-in date. 50% refund for cancellations more than 30 days before check-in date.
We saw more sea turtles within a few blocks of this quiet neighborhood than we have seen in all our other trips to the islands combined! Perfect!
Thanks for the review, Tesla.
This is what Hawaii is about
This is a special home. It reminds me of a family home on a lake I knew of as a child with that carefree indoor/outdoor kind of living. It is casual and grows on you the longer you stay. Outside is beautiful landscaping in a breathtaking setting where you could easily spend the entire day relaxing, snorkeling, and swimming. My family of 6 adults were here for 10 days and we did not leave the property (except for food) for the first 4 days. Wear your reef shoes to get to the water as there are rocks that take a bit of getting used to. We rented paddle boards and a 2 person kayak very nearby and paddled them easily back to the house. A day trip to Molokini boarded us right on the beach just a 5 minute walk up the street. Beautiful sunsets and moonsets every day. I must have taken 50+ photos in varying shades of light and dark of the small tree-accented rocky spit that extends into the water out back. You can’t take a bad photo here. Underwater are beautiful reef fish, corals and turtles. If you like this kind of setting and marine environment, you will appreciate this place. I hope to return some day.
Thank you, Nancy, for this gracious review. I'm always happy when folks enjoy the special beauty of this lovely spot.
Makena Makai Week
My family of six adults spent a week at Makena Makai. There were lots of positives about our stay. The setting is gorgeous. We enjoyed a number of dinners on and gorgeous sunsets from the patio. There was plenty of room for six people and the house was well stocked with beach equipment and kitchen condiments. It was awesome to have an outdoor shower to use after snorkeling with the turtles in the water right by the house. We enjoyed mangoes from the front yard tree. A few things could be upgraded/fixed, but didn’t interfere with our enjoyment of our stay.
Thanks for the review, Martha.
I'm so glad you had a great stay in our home.
In the last couple of years, we have remodeled all 3 bathrooms, and replaced all of the flooring in our home. We also have installed many new windows.
I'm hoping the upgrades you are referring to are inThe kitchen area, as that is next on our list of remodeling projects.
Thanks again. Sue
Wonderful location right on the water, and lots of room. Amazing access to the water both outside the back door - and a short walk down the street to the beach.
Great location, grounds beautiful, house and railings dirty
The grounds were well kept, the view is amazing, except for the hundreds of snorkelers brought in by boat, the table, railings and inside of the property were not clean at all. We spent about 6 hours cleaning, including the outside railings and eating area. I requested an umbrella for the outside table as the tree shed constantly making it impossible to eat or have coffee there. It took 3 days before one was "loaned" to us. Each day the manager said he was getting one to bring over and did not show nor call to say he wasn't coming. It was pretty obvious that very little cleaning had taken place, there were cobwebs everywhere, once we got them down, there were none for the 10 days we were there, Some items were in disrepair, there were patches on the walls, the electrical is scary. Lights blink on and off, one ceiling light has a short, so sometimes it would not come on at all. One air conditioning unit would not turn off unless it was unplugged. There was ice cream spilled on the coffee table when we got there, so that was yet another cleaning project. Walls around the kitchen sink had brown stuff splashed on it, there were other issues as well. If you were to arrive with the house clean, the green railings washed off, etc. this would be a great place to take your family. No one met us and I was frantic to get the information on getting into the house before we left Oregon, there was no phone number to call. Good luck with that.
This review causes me anguish. Our home has been listed on VRBO since 2004, and we have never had any complaints like these.
First of all, I know that one or two of the stated issues is not true. For example, the day this guest was to have left Oregon, she texted me in a panic and said that she had lost the directions, which I had previously sent to her. I resent directions immediately and she acknowledged that she had them. These directions included information which stated how to get in the house, as well as our managers phone number.
I know our manager went to our home at least two or three times during this guest's stay, to address some of the issues, as he called me from our home, while she was there.
Addressing some of the specific complaints, we do not place an umbrella over the outdoor table, as we frequently have high trade winds in the afternoons, and if a large umbrella blew away it could cause damage or even injury.
There are no patches on any of the walls in our home. We do have at least two areas which need touching up, but we had previously scheduled an entire interior painting for the third week in September. I explained this to our guest as well.
We attempted to schedule a spring cleaning while this guest was with us but our managers wife, who schedules cleaning for us, was in Europe and her 15-year-old daughter was hospitalized at the time, so we were unable to schedule deep cleaning until after this guest departed.
It is not unusual to need to wipe down the outside table each day. We clean it before each guest comes. We have not had complaints regarding the green railings prior to this one but we will address that issue going forward.
To my knowledge this guest did not mention her concern about the air conditioning or the light fixture while she was there. All but one of our air conditioners is 2 to 3 months old and yes, the initial draw of the air conditioners, sometimes cause the lights to blink. We had called an electrician about this issue prior to this email, and we are planning to schedule a complete upgrade of the electrical system to eliminate any possible problems.
Our manager checked the air conditioners, immediately after I saw the statement about one of them not turning off. Jim assured me that all of the air conditioners are functioning properly. The remote control on one of the units is only effective, if you stand a few feet from the unit, and it has to be depressed for 2-3 seconds, in order to turn off the unit. Apparently, this is what the guest was referring to when she stated that one of the air conditioners had to be unplugged, in order to be turned off.
I am truly sorry about this guest's discontent, and I am grateful that the overwhelming majority of our guests have been able to experience the great beauty and the Hawaiian traditions, which our home is all about.
Great Family Vacation
Makena Makai is a wonderful place. It is difficult to adequately describe the beauty of the setting. Sunsets are unforgettable. Snorkeling among the sea turtles and fish is exciting. The privacy is exceptional. The property owner is very helpful and responsive. I highly recommend Makena Makai.
Thank you so much for the review, Markku. It was a pleasure to have you and your family in our home.
