About the property

Updated Cozy 2 Bedroom Arts & Crafts Cottage Full of Charm Centrally Located

Welcome to The Bungalow in Long Beach, a small yet thoughtfully designed and appointed Arts and Crafts dwelling built in 1923. Un-hotel. Set yourself apart from the hotel crowd, and experience a part of early 20th-century American architectural history!

Our authentic California bungalow offers a refreshing alternative to the often impersonal corporate hotel. Enjoy the warmth and enchantment of an old house that has been lovingly restored and appointed with modern amenities.

During its most recent remodel, we took the utmost care to preserve the charm and character that define this two-bedroom, one-bathroom “mother-in-law” unit. You’ll be pleased to find intact many of its original vintage features such as built-in cabinetry and period tiling in the kitchen and bathroom, and original hardwood floors throughout the house.

At the same time, you’ll be pleased to find new and comfortable modern furniture to complement The Bungalow's distinctly retro decor and interior. Though characteristically modest in size, this Craftsman house excels in its thoughtful architecture and well-utilized spaces.

A pleasant garden with an outdoor patio just for The Bungalow is an added bonus. This outdoor extension of your living space is the ideal place to relax, read, have a coffee in the morning, or enjoy a cocktail at night. Your patio space is beautifully lit at night, just like the rest of the property surrounding The Bungalow. Relish this special garden, whether on your own or with travel companions!

We think The Bungalow in Long Beach is a gem, and we hope that you will, too!

About Jeff and Sino

Hello! Welcome to The Bungalow. We are Jeff and Sino, and it would be our pleasure to host you during your visit to our beloved city of Long Beach. Though neither one of us started out in Southern California, we are both grateful to call Long Beach home. Jeff grew up in West Virginia and has been living in California since 1993. He has been a teacher for the last 37 years and is currently a professor at one of the local universities. Sino grew up in the Philippines and has been in California since 1984. He is a retired flight attendant for a major airline, and currently works in real estate. We met 23 years ago at a local coffee house just blocks from the very house we now live in. We've been married now for 14 years and we have a daughter who is 7 years old. We are two really happy easygoing guys who adore our child and our home. While we work hard at our respective professions and studies, we also enjoy staying highly engaged as parents in our child's school, taking our daughter to dance and swim lessons, and watching and cheering her play basketball. At heart we are nerds who love education and schooling, books and technology, flea markets and antiquing, traveling, gardening and working on our beautiful property. Most importantly, we are ourselves seasoned and discriminating travelers, which hopefully makes us even more qualified to anticipate and meet the needs of our sophisticated guests. Thank you for visiting with us!!

Jeff and Sino purchased this bungalow in 2007

Why Jeff and Sino chose Eastside

We always knew we wanted to live in Long Beach and we spent a year of Saturdays and Sundays going to every open house in town. We knew we wanted a bungalow house as our previous house in an historic neighborhood in Montgomery, Alabama had been a mission-style bungalow. To be honest, when we walked onto this property and saw the two homes a certain kind of magic instantly struck us! This was the place that would become our forever home. The main house and the beautiful mother-in-law unit (which is The Bungalow in Long Beach you'll be staying in) had all of their original built-in charm. Very little had been touched and remodeled and that's exactly the kind of place we were looking for. There were actually three different couples bidding on the place when we walked through it that first day. But it looks like the property took one look at us and like us back in turn, because just a month later we were holding the keys! We've done major upgrades over the years, always keeping in mind the integrity and originality of the Arts & Crafts Movement. We hope you'll be pleased with the attention to detail and thoughtfulness we've given The Bungalow. The gardens, when we inherited them, were a mess. Jeff, being from a farm in West Virginia, loves to do the gardening and it's taken him 10 years to create the lush, charming gardens you'll enjoy on your stay. He's never quite figured out the California soil, so he has chosen to create a terra-cotta garden full of plants that really complement California Bungalow living. Jeff recently started a little vegetable garden in your own yard full of tomatoes, zucchini, squash, cucumbers, and pumpkins. You are, of course, welcome to pick from the garden as there is plenty for all of us. We are clearly in love with our property and know that you're going to get a crush on it as well. Welcome!!!

What makes this bungalow unique

The front house, where we live, is an 1100 square foot bungalow that mirrors the 700 square-foot mother-in-law unit we've named 'The Bungalow in Long Beach.' The Bungalow mother-in-law units --- also referred to as granny flats --- were built alongside the front dwellings and often replicated their larger counterparts. That is the case with our two homes, which were built with the same rich attention to detail that defines the California Bungalow Movement. What makes ours so special is that, even though we're on the same property, each house has a great feel of privacy. We value your desire for privacy as much as we value ours. As seasoned travelers, we realize that privacy is important to most guests. So although we are right next door and easily accessible, you can rest assured that we will respect your need for privacy and quiet. The Bungalow in Long Beach is especially nice because it is tucked away from the street in the back and surrounded by gorgeous, mature black bamboo. Look out the windows and see the green and listen out the screen door for the whisper of the wind swaying through the bamboo. We especially like The Bungalow's own backyard garden, complete with a mature grape vine that frames an arbor for outside dining. And, of course, the vegetable patch for fresh, organic eating (seasonal). Brace yourself for an abundance of charm!

Exceptional house with peace and quiet

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful little arts and crafts house, impeccably decorated, in a nice quiet location with easy access to Long Beach and Seal Beach. Thoughtful hosts clearly dedicated to a quality guest experience. I'm in Long Beach regularly on business and to see family and stayed here with my partner and son as a holiday alternative to a hotel. It was simply perfect.

Great rental, great location, outstanding hosts. Exceeded expectations!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay here. The professionalism and thoughtfulness of the hosts were evident in many of the details related to the rental -- including the quick and welcoming tour, the holiday decor and welcome items that were in the rental when we arrived, the cleanliness and amenities provided, and the upkeep of the garden and yard. We had such an easy time with our stay here and feel that all of the positive reviews are very warranted. It is also in a great location in Long Beach. Very easy to get to from the airport, close to the water, close to parks, close to great restaurants, etc., and the neighborhood felt very safe. Parking provided as well.

I could go on, but I think you get the picture. We highly recommend this rental and wouldn't hesitate to stay here again in the future.

Thank you, Jeff and Sino!

Truly the quintessential bungalow !

  • 5 of 5

A very charming bungalow with considerate hosts. I was a little nervous as a female staying alone, however the off street parking and fenced in courtyard (with fountain, ferns, and bamboo) made me feel secure. This is a place you wish you lived!

Second to none

  • 5 of 5

Really, truly fantastic. The kitchen has absolutely everything (including coffee and cereal), the bathroom has a stocked cabinet, the towels and linens are spotless - Jeff and Sino even provide laundry detergent. The place is beautifully decorated - the attention to detail is over the top impressive.

And I haven't even mentioned the garden, which is just gorgeous. Neighborhood is great, there's a parking spot, the place is quiet - you get the picture. It's awesome. Thanks, guys. It was a great stay. Hope to see you again soon.

Quality place with full amenities

  • 5 of 5

We used this place as a bridal suite for a week, and I dont think I could've found a better place. I was worried about their pictures being misleading, but it turns out they were spot on; if not understated. The furnishing, amenities, and overall decor were truly first-class quality. The owners did an amazing job of bringing the unique vibes of different counties all into one place. I felt as if I was in Bali. And the owners were so incredibly accomodating; making us feel as if we were long-awaited family members. I can't thank them enough!
