With 2 houses and pool on 3+ acres: relax, lose the stress and decompress!
Located on a quiet, seaside country lane and situated on 3+ private wooded acres, this renovated Cape Cod Main House and Guest Cottage offer wonderful opportunities for relaxation and an ideal base for a relaxed, multi-generational family vacation in three seasons (spring, summer, fall). All living rooms and bedrooms in both houses have electric heat and also air-conditioning units to beat the heat and heat to beat the occasional shoulder season chill.
At the top of the driveway circle, a large, Cedar shingled shed shelters bikes and gear from the elements. A stone path leads to the Main House kitchen door, providing easy access for carrying groceries and the like. The generous, well-shaded side lawn provides ample space for badminton or croquet or a game of ball with your favorite canine friend.
The Main House has three bedrooms and offers comfortable gathering spaces in its spacious living & dining room with fireplace and the adjoining den. The long pine dining table seats ten in comfort. The country kitchen is well equipped with updated stainless steel appliances, and a high-efficiency washer and dryer. A full bath off the den completes the first floor. Upstairs, a full hall bathroom serves the twin and triple bedrooms; the grand master bedroom with cathedral ceiling has its own en suite full bath and spa tub. Every bedroom has cross-ventilation, a ceiling fan and louvered blinds.
Summertime offers numerous outdoor sitting and relaxation areas. The Main House stone terrace with its shady pergola overlooks a side yard and a fully fenced, in-ground pool. The pool area is otherwise secluded from outside view by mature Rhododendron, and chaise lounges and grassy areas provide comfort for sunbathers. A low deck at the rear of the Main House faces a tranquil Japanese garden with waterfall bounded by a stand of tall, leafy bamboo - a perfect place for a leisurely breakfast or coffee. A sunny stone patio and another large deck with built-in seating serve the Guest House. All outdoor spaces are equipped with chairs and tables, and, in some instances, lounges. The green between the main house and guest house is shaded by three mature Kousa Dogwoods, which flower in June and provide lovely shade during the summer.
The single level Cape Cod style Guest Cottage is steps away. Llight and airy with cathedral ceilings, yet a private little world of its own shielded from the Main House by Bamboo and other plantings. This cottage includes a newly renovated living room area with stylish, custom kitchenette, a large master bedroom and newly renovated en suite full bathroom with high efficiency, stacked full-sized washer and dryer.
Adjacent to the Guest Cottage patio is a spacious, enclosed outdoor shower with hot and cold water, where you can fully shower or just rinse off from the pool, a run or the beach. Guests tend to linger here, so If a member of your party goes missing, look for him here first! The hammock on the generous shaded side lawn provides yet another quiet place to enjoy a nap or read a good book.
For the golf enthusiast, Mink Meadows Golf Club is 4 minutes by car or a ten minute walk and offers a friendly atmosphere and a challenging but playable nine hole course - always in great playing condition. Vineyard Haven is about a 7 minute drive and offers shops, restaurants, and ferry. Local West Chop beaches and piers are privately owned and accessible only to West Chop Club members and their accompanied guests. The Tisbury Town Beach on Vineyard Sound (Tashmoo) is about 7 minutes away; the Atlantic beaches, such as Katama, are on the south side of the Island about 30 minutes drive. Oak Bluffs is about 20 minutes away by car, and Edgartown about 25 minutes. There is a VTA bus stop on the West Chop Loop just before Franklin St., and the VTA system provides transport around the entire island.

The matriarch of this family built an open frame Cape summer house (Main House) and established the original plantings in 1951. Over the years, she expanded the Main House with dormers, more bathrooms and a terrace with pergola. 1973 saw the addition of the Guest Cottage, more plantings and a free-form swimming pool. The next generation renovated, insulated and finished the Main House interior in 2008, added a large open deck and stone patio area off the kitchen and redesigned the adjoining Japanese garden. Dining room bay windows offer a serene view of the garden and birds who love the waterfall area. In 65* intervening years , oak trees have grown tall, Rhododendron at the pool have merged to create complete privacy, and moss has covered the low stone steps and path to the Main House lawns - tall oaks and Kousa Dogwoods shade the side yards. The Guest Cottage was updated in 2008 through 2014; 2015-17 saw the completion of renovation of the kitchenette, living room and bath. New major appliances, kitchen equipment and furnishings make the Guest House fully functional, independently of the Main House. New lawn areas between the houses create an intimate, compound. In 2017, we refurnished the living rooms of both houses and added air-conditioning units to living areas and all bedrooms. This property is magical in its opportunities for creative play for children and the young at heart and as a gathering place for family activities and interactions. While Summertime offers many modern amenities and communications, the unpretentious design and furnishings encourage those weary of the pace of modern life to linger and appreciate the simple pleasures of an earlier time. Summertime continues to be our family retreat and reflects the high value we place on privacy, quiet and simplicity. We enjoy the process of overseeing the evolution of the property - ever mindful of the need to preserve its essential character.
Jim purchased this House in 1949
Why Jim chose West Chop
Our family has enjoyed the West Chop area of the Vineyard for three generations. The property enjoys easy access by bike or car to the restaurants and shops of Vineyard Haven, but once past the West Chop flag pole and down our unpaved country lane, the area is rural in character - the property provides unusual privacy and quiet. While Summertime offers many modern amenities and communications facilities, the unpretentious design and simple furnishings encourage those weary of the pace of modern life to linger and appreciate the simple pleasures and amusements of an earlier time in a beautiful and natural setting.

Exquisite golf weekend
With beautiful nearby courses, the ocean a stones throw away and the accommodations so very precious, we could not have had a more wonderful weekend. A truly warm setting and ideal location.
A Wonderful Gem!
My family and I have stayed at Summertime many times over the years and have thoroughly enjoyed every visit. The house is quite comfortable and can accommodate a large family like ours. Having a fully furnished guest cottage near the main house is a wonderful plus as it allows guests to be part of the household yet come and go as they please. The grounds have a number of interesting little paths, offer a nice mix of sun and shade, and are always well maintained. The property also has a nice pool and patio area, which is quite rare for homes in and around West Chop. Summertime is conveniently located within easy walking distance of all of the activities and amenities West Chop has to offer, yet it is also nicely secluded for those times when one simply wants to relax by oneself. Finally, having come to know Summertime's owners over the years, my wife and I can attest that they are first-rate individuals who truly care about making sure each and every person or family that rents their home has an excellent experience.
Summertime is Perfect!
We've been staying at this beautiful spot for several years. It's the ideal getaway. Lovely accommodations, beautiful grounds, including a pool for lazing around. Take a short walk to the beach, or maybe climb into the hammock for reading or watching birds. There's everything you need to prepare a gourmet meal, an outdoor barbecue, or a lovely breakfast under the pergola.
We love this beautiful spot and recommend it highly.
