Our sweet backyard cottage is nestled among the fruit and flower trees of the yard. It is easily within walking distance to the grocery store, coffee, shopping, restaurants, post office, and local arch park events. It is at the north entrance to Yellowstone Park, as is all of Gardiner. The cottage is in the heart of town and also shielded from the main street by the owners' home. The yard is shared with the owners but privacy is afforded by the trees. The owners' home was built in 1930 and its cottage was built in the 1940s by former owners, the Eastons. It is believed that their intent was to rent the cottage to visitors of Yellowstone, making it a very early vacation rental in this town. The cottage is a perfect fit for two people who want to day trip to northern Yellowstone, book local activities like rafting, biking, horseback riding, and return to a comfortable environment to relax. Our guests note that the well cultivated green and floral landscaping add to the charm and character of their experience. The stucco cottage still has the details of its early history with the old style door knobs and kitchen cabinets, and offers a comfortable queen bed, dining area, kitchen, and full bathroom. It is clean, well cared for, and you are welcome!

Tom and Eleanor Stone came to Yellowstone Park in the late 70s and early 80s, met and were married here. They worked in the interior of the Park for a number of years and then settled in Gardiner in 1989. They raised their two daughters in Gardiner. Outside of work Tom enjoys gardening, fly fishing, reading, and traveling when able. When not working, Eleanor's life revolves around family, friends, and food and she's been active in the community. They have been hosting family and friends in the Lilac Cottage for years and are happy to open it to newcomers and folks who want to enjoy the area.
Eleanor Stone purchased this cottage in 1995
We love our home and cottage because of its location. It is handy to go out the door to run errands or explore, and yet this downtown property has a surprising ability to tuck you away. We love the old fashioned comfort of this historic property.
We purposely keep the nightly rate of Lilac Cottage reasonable for this area. The reason is that we think that the additional 10% taxes (7% state and 3% local) plus the $30 cleaning fee and now the new VRBO Service Fee add enough to your charges! We are making our rate fair in comparison to vacation rentals in the area and even Gardiner motels.
The location was perfect, the cottage was darling and Eleanor was the greatest!
Everything about our stay at the Lilac Cottage was great! From our first contact with lots of helpful information and great directions we both were so impressed and wish we'd planned more days there. We stayed at the lovely cottage for 3 nights and the location is so convenient, a very short distance to Yellowstone's North gate in Gardiner, MT. The cottage was clean and comfortable and with absolutely everything we could possibly want. The kitchen had anything you'd need if you wanted to stay in for meals, but there was also a great list of restaurant recommendations and other places to go and things to see. There were maps and guide books and games and great selection of books and DVDs. The bed was so comfy with luxurious sheets and plump pillows, the bathroom was spotlessly clean and the towels so thick. We really felt pampered. Eleanor was nearby and available if you had questions, but respects your privacy too. I will definitely stay again if we go back to Yellowstone and I would absolutely recommend it to friends and family!
Eleanor was great and very accommodating, room was clean/tidy. We were located within walking distance of everything in Gardiner and were blown away by the beauty of the surrounding area. The cottage supplied everything we needed and was quiet and close to our vacation destinations. 10/10.
The place was very clean. But for what we paid per night, I should take out the trash.
The owners never really made any attempt to introduce themselves. In previous stays, the owners were cordial and friendly.
I loved the Lilac Cottage! The cottage is clean, private and charmingly decorated with close, convenient parking. It is a pleasant place to come "home" to each evening after spending the day in Yellowstone National Park. Just 5 minutes or so from the North Entrance to the park. A small grocery store is just a block or two away. I found the kitchen to have everything I needed. I highly recommend.
We had a great stay and felt very welcome. We enjoyed the privacy and the cleanliness of the cottage. We were welcomed with a vase full of fresh cut flowers. Lots of chocolate and even ice cream in the freezer. Tom and Eleanor were great hosts. Giving us our space and answering any questions we had about the park. It's a wonderful place to stay and we would highly recommend it to anyone.
Yellowstone Park's north entrance is one mile from your door. Rafting is across the street. Arrangements for horseback riding, mountain biking, cookouts, fly fishing, hiking guides and much more are across the street. Great places to eat and find coffee are on the next block in either direction.
During the Shoulder and Low Seasons, the $30 cleaning fee is deducted from your quote at the time of booking. The $30 cleaning fee is applied to High Season only.
