Nice cottage in a perfect location

  • 4 of 5

The cottage was clean and had a cosy front room with a comfortable sofa. The view from the cottage is stunning and the kids loved the shared terraced garden.

The holiday was only let down by the access to the property. Unfortunately the normal route was closed due to a landslide and we had to take a very narrow lane for about 1/2 mile.

If you are a competent driver you should manage it but it does take about 10 minutes and there are a few points where there are only inches either side of the car.

The problem comes when you meet another car coming in the opposite direction and you have to reverse. We decided to limit our trips out to 1 a day.

The family next to us decided to leave their car at the paddocks hotel and walk the 12 minutes to the cottage, but this is not really practical if you have young kids plus I did not want to pay £8 a day for parking.

During our stay we decided to check on the progress of the repair of the normal road but it was obvious that no work had begun and we subsequently found out that it would not be completed until October at the earliest.

The food at the Saracens head was amazing and using the hand ferry was fun, however avoid the Wye Knot Inn at all costs, the food was terrible.

There are some great walks on your doorstep with lots of fun to be had on the river. I would definitely return to the cottage but only once the access is sorted.

Lovely comfortable and well-equipped cottage in a very pretty setting.

  • 5 of 5

Perfectly situated to explore the towns, countryside and places of interest in the Wye valley and the Forest of Dean. Loads of activities available including walking, canoeing, stand up paddle boarding, cycling, Tintern Abbey, castles, historic towns and cities, museums and steam trains.

The cottage was cosy and clean, and we had everything we needed for a relaxing holiday. Several excellent pubs offering meals within walking distance of the cottage too.

Pretty cottage in a beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from staying in this pretty terraced cottage in the beautiful location of Symonds Yat. The location is perfect and the cottage it’s self is kept very well and we felt right at home. All communication with the owners was professional and prompt. We decided to stay an extra night and they were happy to rearrange this for us. The main road to the cottage is currently blocked so we used the narrow road in. Although the road is tight in spaces we managed to get out Audi A6 Estate along it with no problems, also the owners kindly directed us where it was narrow and even sent photos. In all a really enjoyable stay, the area is beautiful and there is access to two lovely local pubs, walks and the stunning river setting. We will definitely be back. Thank you for everything.

A very enjoyable short break

  • 5 of 5

What a fabulous area of the country this is! We were lucky enough to have superb weather during our stay The cottage was lovely and had all the home comforts you could want - the living space was comfortable with a nice corner sofa and the grounds were delightful. We took our terrier, he was very happy. It was dogs on leads in the grounds but lots of lovely doggy smells which kept him occupied for ages. During our visit, only the lower road was accessible to the property. It's a bit tight in a large estate car, but do-able if you drive slowly and well worth it when you arrive. To be honest, there's plenty to do here without a car. We took the hand ferry to the Saracens Head, great food and rhubarb cider which was gorgeous. The Kingfisher River Cruise was delightful with lots of interesting facts about the area. As steam train enthusiasts we spent a day travelling on the Dean Forest Railway, great scenery and a lovely meal at the Swan hotel in Lydney. Lydney harbour is a lovely spot but make sure you know where you are going, we went wrong and had to call a taxi to take us back into town as it was too hot for our dog! A must is the walk from the cottage to Bilbins Bridge, a beautiful old suspension bridge along the river, In fact there are so many walks in this area you will be spoiled for choice. Anyway, to sum up, a lovely cottage, very comfortable and clean in a stunning area. Debbie, our host was so helpful before we arrived. Very easy to deal with. Be sure to visit Yat Rock. We went on the most beautiful day. Stunning views over 3 counties and we saw Red Kites and Buzzards. I totally fell in love with this part of the country. Our visit was far too short. There is loads to do. We will definitely be back x

alternative track to cottage is unsuitable for motor vehicles .signs say this and its true. had to carry our suit cases and God knows what else 1 mile and then 1 mile back. cottage was very nice with real wood floors and comfy bed but we also had mice in living room and kitchen. would return if they ever get upper road re opened.

Owner's Response: How disappointing to receive this 2* review as most have been 5* with nothing lower than 4* - we would have hoped that the property & area were rated, rather than the current situation. I’m sure you appreciate that the current main access road closure is completely out of our control and whilst the lower road access is not ideal, it is drivable with caution - we have driven it ourselves. It is also the only access for the houses along the river As owners, in this situation, we will always pre warn our guests & if they are concerned, give them the opportunity to cancel. Regarding the mouse situation, the cottage has been thoroughly checked and no sign of current mice habitation has been found. We were at the cottage ourselves prior to this guest and saw no sign. Therefore, we can only conclude due to the hot weather with windows and doors left open, a mouse (& you did quote singular on your email to us) has come in from outside, attracted by food left out in the kitchen. Possibly a hazard of the countryside especially due to the proximity of woodland behind. You mention you would return again, so assume you liked the cottage itself - again complimented in your email - hopefully next time you will have a better experience.

Very clean and had everything we needed.

Excellent position close to the river. Numerous excellent eateries within walking distance. Lots to see and do, tried paddle boarding for the first time. Excellent morning with an excellent instructor. Would recommend the property and Symonds Yat.
