About Keith McGowan
Hi I am Donna and I was born and raised in Northton and still have family living in the village. Taransay Cottage is my home but at the moment we cannot live here full time due to work. Harris is a special place; the beaches, wildlife, sea, hills and dramatic weather combine to make a unique outdoor experience. Also the people are very welcoming and there are great places to eat and drink.
Keith McGowan purchased this Chalet in 2004
Why Keith McGowan chose Isle of Harris
There are many good holiday lets in Harris. This is slightly different as we set it up to be our home but as we currently work on the mainland sadly we spend too little time here. So it is equipped and furnished as a home not as a holiday let which means it is a very comfortable place to stay. It is also in a fantastic location and there are few properties that have such a great view from almost every seat.
What makes this Chalet unique
The are few house here or anywhere else that have such wonderful views over beaches sea and hills. The dramatic weather means that the view is constantly changing and can become very absorbing. The 2 seats in the dining room soon become the preferred spot in the house as you enjoy a coffee whilst planning the day or perhaps relaxing with a glass of wine after a full day of enjoying the great outdoors that Harris has to offer.

An extremely comfortable and well equipped house in a dream location
Taransay Cottage has everything any holiday maker would wish in their own home. Warm, very comfortable and spacious and would more than compensate if the weather was bad. Wonderful views to the distant hills/mountains and Atlantic Ocean breaking on Scarasta Beach - this from the sitting areas and the large kitchen. The rare habitat of the machair with its rich bird and plant life foregrounds the view framed by dunes in the mid distance. This is without doubt the best combined property and location we have ever stayed in. A truly wonderful experience with ever changing light and weather conditions. More rainbows in the week than in the rest of my life. Alas no pots of gold but there is The Golden Road nearby!

Clean, warm, light and airy.
It was such a pleasure to have somewhere that was clean, warm, light and airy to return to each evening. The property contained everything you could need and more. If there were any problems (which there weren't) family members were close by to assist. Ideally situated centrally to travel north and south for exploring.
Enjoyed our stay in this cottage, fantastic position very clean and well equipped would stay again most likely will.
Wonderful house, wonderful location
A wonderful property, clean, well furnished and well equipped. It is definitely more of a home than a simple rental house with many extras from beach towels, toys, board games and books.
It is a fantastic location, with wonderful views and the beaches a short stroll away. We would definitely recommend the both the property and the island for a stunning peaceful break with fantastic scenery and wildlife.
Great house and location
The house is far more spacious than first impressions suggest. Located a short drive from the ferry port, it is set back from the road and mid way between Croft 36, a purveyor of delicious home cooked food, and the Temple cafe.
A five minute walk down the road leads to a good and secluded beach which must surely rank highly amongst the other wonderful beaches on Harris.
The house is well equipped, clean and comfortable and despite the caveat posted by the owners about the reliability of the internet connection, we had no problems whatsoever.
The characters available to me in posting this review prohibit me from listing all of the places worth visiting on Harris and Lewis, however discovering them for yourself is part of the fun.
I would certainly recommend a few drives to the more remote parts of Harris and the south of Lewis, some of the scenery is breathtaking.
All in all, we had an excellent week here.
Thanks for your hospitality.
Excellent property and amazing views
The property itself is fantastic and exceptionally well equipped. Everything you will need is there, particularly if you have young children (including bucket and spade for the beach). The view from the cottage, even on a wet and misty day, is beautiful. Several beaches are within walking distance and lots more within a short drive. Overall Harris is a great place to spend a week, Northton is an ideal location and this cottage is an ideal base.
