About Keith McGowan

Hi I am Donna and I was born and raised in Northton and still have family living in the village. Taransay Cottage is my home but at the moment we cannot live here full time due to work. Harris is a special place; the beaches, wildlife, sea, hills and dramatic weather combine to make a unique outdoor experience. Also the people are very welcoming and there are great places to eat and drink.

Keith McGowan purchased this chalet in 2004

Why Keith McGowan chose Scotland

There are many good holiday lets in Harris. This is slightly different as we set it up to be our home but as we currently work on the mainland sadly we spend too little time here. So it is equipped and furnished as a home not as a holiday let which means it is a very comfortable place to stay. It is also in a fantastic location and there are few properties that have such a great view from almost every seat.

What makes this chalet unique

The are few house here or anywhere else that have such wonderful views over beaches sea and hills. The dramatic weather means that the view is constantly changing and can become very absorbing. The 2 seats in the dining room soon become the preferred spot in the house as you enjoy a coffee whilst planning the day or perhaps relaxing with a glass of wine after a full day of enjoying the great outdoors that Harris has to offer.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We found your home at Northton to be an excellent location for exploring Harris and convenient for the ferries from both Tarbert and Leverburgh. Taransay cottage suited us perfectly and we have never been in such a well equipped cottage. Very comfortable, clean, and furnished and decorated in a contemporary way. The situation is very peaceful and the village has interesting walks to the beach and to Toe Head without having to use the car.

The home baking from the cabin was very good and pizzas from the Temple cafe were useful on the night before departure. We love the island and hope to return again some time in the future.

Excellent property and amazing views

  • 5 of 5

The property itself is fantastic and exceptionally well equipped. Everything you will need is there, particularly if you have young children (including bucket and spade for the beach). The view from the cottage, even on a wet and misty day, is beautiful. Several beaches are within walking distance and lots more within a short drive. Overall Harris is a great place to spend a week, Northton is an ideal location and this cottage is an ideal base.

Wonderful week at Taransay cottage. Weather was magnificent and the views from the house were fabulous. After exploring the island it was nice to relax in the cottage or enjoy the short walk to the beach to watch the sunset.

This is the second time we have stayed on the Isle of Harris and had a truly wonderful time staying in Taransay. It is far the best accommodation we have stayed in. The owners have made it a real home from home. The furnishings are tasteful and there are so many home comforts. The home is perfect for children. Our 4 year old daughter was delighted to find so many toys to play with and children's books to read. We did not watch any television in the evenings. We just sat looking out the window in the dining room listening to the corncrake, oyster catchers and cuckoo's until 11pm at night. It provided the peace and tranquillity we longed for on our holiday. We were blessed with a whole week of sunshine and warm weather. It was above 22 degrees each day. We found Northton a perfect place to stay and some days we did not even leave the area. We enjoyed walking up to Croft 36. We would certainly recommend the freshly baked bread rolls straight out of the oven at 10am and the indulgent chocolate brownies! The fish curry was also greatly enjoyed, all reasonably priced and no need to cook! 600 metres from the house was The Temple Cafe where we often enjoyed a lovely coffee and truly delicious home made cakes such as raspberry scones and date slices. The beaches in Northton are stunningly beautiful and have to be seen to be believed. They are made more special as there were few people on them at the end of May. At the end of the day, Taransay was such a welcoming home to return to and was spotlessly clean. We met a local lady named Chrissy who was a truly lovely lady, who was responsible for ensuring we gained access to Taransay and were settled. We talk about Chrissy now as she was so friendly and lovely to talk to and ensured the house was kept so clean and welcoming. The cake left upon arrival in the house was gratefully appreciated, thank you. We felt so sad to leave Taransay, but we visit the Isle of Harris every other year and are planning to book again. Thank you for providing a house that is so beautiful, comfortable and well-equipped. We have been home a week now and still miss it! Rebecca and Paul, Leicestershire - May 2018
