The villa is a beautiful location and all that it appears to be in the photos. Perfect for a relaxing, quiet time or entertaining a larger group. The hospitality and responsiveness of the owner and the on-site support is second to none. Wonderful experience!
Contadora Island is beautiful and the house is located at the most beautiful beach. The island itself saw its glory days but needs a lot of investment, which is unlikely. So don't expect to see Tahiti or Maldives, or any other luxurious tropical island. But the beauty of its beaches is just indescribable. We were there at the lowest season in May, and it truly felt that we were alone on the island with exception of people who inhibit the island. There is a small grocery store, where you can buy basics (drinking water, milk, butter, cooking oil, pasta, rice, limited fruit), so if you are considering bringing food from the mainland, stick to bringing fruit and vegetables and cheese and meat cuts (depending on your taste), don't bring water and milk (its heavy and unnecessary). We chartered a 8-seater plane from Panama City (we were 8 ppl) with Helicoptero Personales, they fly from the domestic airport and are very good, but they speak very basic (and I mean very!) basic English, but they are reliable and seem to have good pilots. We grabbed Uber from the international airport to the domestic one, which is very good in Panama, so don't bother organizing local taxies. We agreed with the uber driver to do a tour of the city upon our return to. Back to Contadora, not much to do on the island besides swim, swim and swim. And its fabulous! We did hire a local dive master for some diving trips, which was great as he told us a few fun stories about Bear Grills, and also he took us on a small island hopping tour. Restaurants are plenty but many were closed because of the season, but the Italian restaurant is a must (amazing pizza!), and he does take always, but you will have to pick it up. Otherwise, food is pretty good at the restaurants. The house itself is dated so don't expect to see royal suite, it has basic 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, kitchen and a living/dinning area. It is a tropical island, so there are bugs everywhere in the house, and there is nothing you can do about it, just don't pay attention as they are totally harmless. The utensils in the house are plenty but very basic. Remember - you didn't come to this island to stay in the kitchen or in the bedroom, so IT DOESN"T MATTER! We were there during a severe drought so the water was scarce, pool was half filled which was ok but we spend more time in the ocean, and don't expect to take long showers as water pressure is almost none. Oh, and washing machine barely worked (as it requires water pressure...).
Very relaxing stay. Woke up every morning with a dip in the private pool then made breakfast. Sun bathed, went kayaking, watched the sunset on the beach in a hammock. The place was well maintained. Nice staff came to clean every late morning. Nice way to feel like a billionaire for a couple days. :)
Stayed here with my boyfriend for a nice getaway. We had the most wonderful time! The staff are super friendly, the house is extremely well kept and is located right on the beautiful beach. It was a great experience and we can't wait to go back!
This cliff top beach home offered both an ample swimming pool and a stairway down to a secluded golden sandy beach and a comfortable family room right on the beach. It boasted hammocks and chairs, with some good reading; a table tennis table and a kayack for the more energetic!
It would be hard to surpass this relaxed family beach side home that came with three good sized bedrooms and two baths - two bedrooms opening onto the Terrace and pool area. There was an indoor dining and sitting room with kitchen and outside a selection of tables and chairs around the pool that had a bar at one end.
Our family reunion was enhanced by the setting. Staff were both helpful and unobtrusive. And the house had a manual that answered all basic questions.
We loved staying - and we will be back.
Our group of seasoned travelers, who have stayed in many vacation homes, unfortunately were collectively disappointed with the overall condition of this house once we arrived. Several items were in disrepair or in very poor condition as noted below.
• The air conditioner for the living room did not work and some of the light fixtures in the house did not work. Our kids were supposed to sleep in the living room but it was far too hot so they had to sleep with us. Bummer.
• The Formica kitchen counter was broken and falling apart by the sink.
• Many pots and pans were old and unsafe to use (teflon was flaking off). Many of the knives were rusty and the kitchen was not properly stocked with utensils.
• Several tiles in the pool were cracked and had been “repaired” very sloppily by glopping on tons of caulk.
• The water level in the pool was significantly lower than it should have been. The water level in the pool was low enough that our 3 kids could not grasp the sides nor could we see them when they played. Imagine swimming in a quarry. This is a safety issue and we should have been told about before we arrived. We read in a previous review before we arrived that a rail (with a 50’ drop!) was missing by the pool. When we asked about it we were assured it had been fixed. It was not. When we complained, it was fixed a few days later.
• The outdoor fans were not working.
• There was trash, including broken glass (which I picked up) on the beach sand near the base of the stairs leading down to the beach.
What was also disappointing, is that the photos of the house used on VRBO make it seem so nice. The house itself seems much more 'aged' than the photos would have you think. The house is really showing it's age.
We contacted the owner/manager about out disappointment. All we got was silence (no response). I would not recommend this property at all. There are many nicer places on the island to stay at.
Also, other commenters have indicated that food prices are sky high. It is true. You will gasp in disbelief at the price of some food items. What we should have done is buy all of our food and alcoholic beverages needed for our stay at grocery stores in Panama City.
There is a water shortage on the island so the tap water is undrinkable. Not the house's fault.
If you are looking for a little adventure there are many different tours you can go on such as island tours, whale watching (between the months of July to October) certified diving trips, fishing, snorkeling and biking.
You may enjoy any of Contadora's 13 beautiful beaches which encircle the island, or take excursions to nearby islands, most of which are uninhabited, and find your own private beach for sunbathing and picnicking. Just across the way is Pacheca Island, roosting spot for magnificent frigate birds and an excellent spot for bird watching. Healthy coral reefs are intact directly offshore from Playa Galeón and Playa Larga.
For a truly private beach experience it is also possible to take a boat to one of the archipelago's uninhabited islands.
The water that surrounds Isla Contadora is ideal for a myriad of different water activities. Diving and snorkeling are among the most popular activities, and there is a small dive shop in town that can equip visitors with the necessary equipment.
Contadora is the only island in the archipelago with a developed tourist infrastructure. Beaches are spectacular, the snorkeling is world class, and the island is a great jumping-off point for independent exploration of the archipelago.
