Life at the top

  • 5 of 5

Situated at the top of Riomaggiore's pedestrian only (sort of) main street, Ca Da Iride offers views of the sea and town from the uppermost rooms. But even if you can't get one of those, you'll still be surrounded by flowers and lemon trees while lounging on comfortable patios. The property manager is a tireless keeper of things beautiful and fixer of things broken. He speaks very little English, but it only added to the charm of the place, and to our Italian experience. Could not have been sweeter. I recommend a walk down the hill to the panificio for some breakfast pastries to be eaten al fresco outside your room. And if you're traveling with a lot of luggage, I would suggest springing for a cab from La Spezia. It will drop you off close to the property, which beats walking up the hill with all that stuff! That same hill, though, is helpful in working off dinner or gelato eaten "downtown."

AWESOME PLACE, GREAT LOCATION

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful, clean rooms, everything is new and remodeled, the terraces are beautiful. The higher up your room is, the better the view. The owner speaks a little English and he and his wife were so sweet, you can't help but fall in love with them. Their son speaks English very well and he handled all of the exchange of money etc. he was so very nice too. This family takes pride in their accommodations and it shows! If I am ever so fortunate to get to Cinque Terre region again, I would stay here. You could even use it as a base to see other parts of Italy as you are at the last of the towns and very easy to reach major roads. The owner's son was so accommodating that after we left he somehow beat us down the hill to tell us to visit Porte Venere (sp?) before we left the area, and we were so happy that we did not miss this spectacular town. These accommodations are a very good value for the price. I was traveling with 3 other couples so we had all of their apts. and each one was charming.

We hit the jackpot staying here!!

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful place to stay.

We had all 4 rooms and all of us were so happy to stay here.

They are so friendly and helpful in every possible way.

Us girls showed up a day before our husbands came and it was so nice to have them pack our luggage up the stairs for us. :-)

Rooms are well looked after and very quiet.

Defiantly would recommend this property.

A+

Wonderful place with charming owners

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this B&B for three nights and can't describe how sad we were to leave. We arrived later than expected, well after midnight, and were cheerfully greeted by the owner despite the late night. We were given a room with a beautiful private patio and a wonderful view of the town and the sea. Our room was spotless and as a bonus, they give you croissants and pastries as well as coffees and teas to enjoy when you want and it is refilled daily. This location is up the hill from the sea, so you do have one steep incline as well as steps, but it is no more than you will find anywhere throughout the region. We enjoyed the sunsets nightly and it was a wonderful place to sit on the porch and drink wine and enjoy the view. We will definitely be back to Cinque Terre and wouldn't imagine staying anywhere else.

Our Visit

  • 5 of 5

This spot was the perfect location for walking up and down Riomaggiore. The owner was so sweet to us and gave us a bottle of his home made wine. The room was very clean and comfortable. We did not eat the packaged goodies that were for breakfast. The patio was a good place for relaxing. We would definitely stay here again.

Wonderful Location

  • 4 of 5

Great location to act as a base to see the Cinque Terre. This is not a B&B in the traditional US sense. The description is quite accurate on what they provide. The room was as described; it was clean and well kept. You may have to hunt around a bit to get your keys as there is no formal office.

The next town over (Manarola) was our favoirte of the five towns. Don't miss the short vineyard walk and eat at Trattoria Dal Billy both in Manarola. The trails and Vernazza have been heavily damaged by flooding. Much of the trails were closed and Vernazza was all messed up. There is very little to see or do in Corniglia. Monterosso has the only extended beach and is the only town with flat walking along the beach.

The park national of Cinque Terre is one of the best preserved areas of the Mediterranean. Historical and geomorphologic reasons have forbidden excessive housing development and the creation of major roadways. Human activity and especially viticulture, have contributed to create a unique landscape in which the development of the typical stone walls is so extensive as to equal that of the famous Great Wall of China. All these, combined with a crystal clear sea, an interesting architectural landscape, a varied and extensive network of paths (one of the most enviable in the whole Mediterranean), makes the Cinque Terre an increasingly desired location among Italian and foreign tourists. This is not so much the result of a successful promotional campaign but rather the spontaneous recognition of the uniqueness of the place, of its beauty, of the enjoyment one gets from or visiting.

Notes:
Riomaggiore is in a small valley along the coast, is the first country of the Cinque Terre coming from La Spezia. The country is of original medieval, with houses intersected by small roads and paths protected. The Cinque Terre are famous for the production of the good white dry wine and of the Sciacchetrà, the origins of these products go back at the end of the twelfth century. The little seaport of Riomaggiore is an evocative setting between buildings with typical and coloured buildings. Its famous 'Via dell'Amore' (street of love), a route near sea, connecting Riomaggiore with Manarola.
