Until recently my wife and I, along with our children, have lived full time in this property. We have relocated to central Florida and are very excited to be able to use this property as a weekend retreat! But with 3 children active in sports, we knew we wouldnt be able to use it every weekend. So we decided to open it up to you, our guest, so you could experience all that we have loved about living on the east coast of Florida!
Daniel Cross purchased this mobile home in 2005
We decided to buy this home after a day trip to the east coast of Florida and seeing the many advantages of living on the Intracoastal.
Shrimping is a fun activity to try while you're visiting! Beware, once you taste the fresh shrimp caught here locally, you will never be able to eat it in a restaurant again! It''s that good! This location is perfect for a family with varying tastes. Dad can go out fishing with one of the local guides while Mom relaxes on the beach with her favorite book and the kids play in the waves! Have a boat? Bring it! Having a private dock in the back yard makes it so easy to jump on your boat for a sunset cruise, or head to one of the many restaurants on the water!
What a great place to stay! The listing was accurate. I stayed from June 29th till July 29th.
The property is located on the canal which we took advantage of. A friend who lives nearby picked us up via a boat on the dock. There was also the great screen enclosed gazebo out back with a grill. It was nice to sit down and enjoy dinner together out there!
Inside the house everything was as described. It really felt like your own vacation home.
Inside and out it was clean. The lawn was trimmed every so often and there was a huge tree sitting over the drive way which was great because I had rented a black car with black interior (in the summer heat, I don't know what I was thinking!).
The owner went above and beyond for me. The keypad had stopped working and she had the neighbor next door over in a few minutes to help change the batteries out. She was super nice and friendly as well.
I drove mostly to Daytona (40 minutes away) when I wanted to shop or dine out. There is also Port Orange (30 minutes) which has a great outdoor shopping area. At the top of the park there was great little restaurant called Country Kitchen. The prices were reasonable and it's where the locals go ;-)
I would recommend this place to people! In fact, I just did last night to my Aunt who wants to escape the frigid north this winter.
Hope this review is helpful for others like us that live in a large house with more than an acre of yard. This was our first stay in a house trailer, we'd try it to see if retirement in one would be something we could do. I thought the living space would be tight but it wasn't. It might be for more than 2 people but not for 2. The king size bed was more than comfortable, the ensuite bathroom was small but the shower was terrific, in that the water pressure was the best I've ever had and there was plenty of hot water. The property space was small and could be improved, but the view from the gazebo is so soothing and refreshing that any trouble anyone might have about staying in a house trailer should be eliminated. We could sit out there over the canal and watch nature all day. Six osprey live in the neighborhood, there are many crows and turkey vultures flying overhead all day. The mullet, jumping in the canal all day long, was a joy to watch. The first two weeks of March presented us with no manatee sightings but from then it was crazy. Most of the time they settled at the end of the canal, about 5 properties to the west. The most we saw there was 7, but the canal one street over to the north produced twice that many. They have about as much energy as a bed ridden patient, but they are something to keep your interest for an hour or more.
The Oak Hill area is sparse for restaurants and things to do, but beaches are not far away. New Smyrna is about 15 minutes away and you can park on the beach for $10 or search for free parking in one of the two lots near the beach, the southern most one is the largest. Daytona Beach is about 45 minutes away and is worth the ride - parking on the beach is also $10. Try Tuesday at Joe's Crab Shack on the pier at Daytona - $2 drinks and appetizers during the afternoon. Cocoa Beach is about 35 minutes to the south - not worth the ride in our opinion - you even have to pay to park at restaurants, although Ron John's Surf Shop is worth a stop (free parking in their lot). The Kennedy Space Center (40 minute ride) is definitely worth a day trip.
Get some fresh shrimp at the Oak Hill Fish Market - great flavor, not like what we get up north from Indonesia. Blackbeard's Inn in New Smyrna is worth a try - go early. Skip the Chinese places in Englewood. Grab a drink at Norwood's Treehouse in New Smyrna as it opens at 4 PM. We also had a good meal at Goodrich's in Oak Hill, but get the local fresh fish.
My husband and I stayed the months of January and February. The mobile home was very comfortable with a large Master Bedroom and bath. Weather permitting we sat in the outside screened in lanai and watched TV or sat on the dock and watched the birds or fished. It is within 10 miles of New Smyrna beach and numerous parks and golf courses. We visited St. Augustine and Cocoa Beach to witness a rocket launch during our stay. It works well for pet owners and fishermen. The owners, Dan and Dana are very helpful and friendly We very much enjoyed our stay.
Stayed 10-8 to 10-12-14. My wife and daughter stayed the first night along with our dog (Buddy) Had a wonderful time, great meal at Goodrich's. They left the next day, my brother and 3 friends joined me. We fished and just relaxed, grilled out, drank a few cold ones .Gazebo was the place, watched football right there, while watching Manatees as well.Great time.
All was pretty much just how it was depicted. The property was very clean.Dana and Daniel were very helpful and were very prompt with responses and answers.I'd highly recommend to fishermen, boaters, families visiting central Florida(Great location, close to all attractions)or just couples who may want to get away.
Looking forward to returning to Shrimp!
My husband and I just celebrated our 10 year anniversary here. In spite of a rainy weekend, we had a wonderful time on the river. We docked our flats boat right in the backyard. The gazebo is AMAZING! The house (trailer) is very clean, nicely furnished, and fully equipped. We chose to eat out at night. There are plenty of places to eat north of here. We visited The Garlic and Dustin's BBQ. We are from Central FL so the drive was easy and just far enough away from the kids to feel like we were on vacation. We (almost) wished we had them with us, because they would have loved watching the manatees in the canal every day. The kids room is nice and full of great books! The neighbors were a bit loud at night and very near. (They used our back yard as a pass through between the houses.) Over all our experience was wonderful. The owner even surprised us with a special treat, Champagne and a Fruit/Cheese tray in celebration of our anniversary!
I've stayed her during Bike Week March 2011 and stayed again April 2014. I never really cared for Florida until I stayed in Oak Hill. It's more picturesque and laid back. It's beautiful staying on the Inter-coastal yet, more reasonable cost than staying in Orlando. The best part is that it's central to everything. We enjoyed visiting Cocoa Beach, Port Canaveral, Titusville, Daytona, New Smyrna, Orlando and St. Augustine with about an hours drive to most and minutes to several. The rental is neat as a pin and tastefully decorated. It was most comfortable and enjoyable when we just wanted to relax at "home" and cook home cooked meals. The neighborhood is quiet yet very friendly. We also enjoyed the nearby restaurants. You'll want for nothing staying here. The owners are most attentive and are valuable resources for information on local attractions. We can't wait to come back!!!!
