Welcome to “The Land of 13 Moons.” Please take the time to view our video of the property. This 17 acre estate was named after the Native American knowledge of a 13 moon calendar, which represented to us a sensibility in sync with natural rhythms.
Ten years in creation, '13 Moons' is a world in itself. Come and explore the 2 acres of organic, permaculture created gardens filled with fruit trees, kitchen herbs, medicinal plants, food and hundreds of flowers. Walk the foot trails that meander through 17 acres of pristine woods. And swim in 'Blue Dragonfly Pond,' a stunning spring fed pond, 100 X 80 feet, and 18' deep. A dip in this pond may change your life.
The vacation house is called, 'La Casa del Corazon,' The House of the Heart. This 2-bedroom house has one queen size bed, two twin beds, and a comfortable day bed. This home has been meticulously created and designed by its artist residents both inside and out.
Inside the house you will find every amenity for comfort with sweeping vistas of the surrounding land and gardens. The master bedroom inhabits the entire second story. And the master bathroom has an ample two-person whirlpool spa bath with grand picture windows that open to a commanding view of the entire property.
The living room, dining room, and kitchen all comprise an open first floor layout, with the east wall made entirely of windows and multiple sliding glass doors allowing the room to be bathed in natural light. French doors in the living room open to a precious stone pathway which leads to a private vine covered patio with outdoor tables, chairs and cooking grill.
The house is equipped with every modern appliance including a dishwasher, W/D, wifi, large screen TV, Ipod dock, wood stove, antique pine floors, A/C, and a fully equipped kitchen with everything a cook could ask for.
The second bedroom, located on the first floor, feels like it is buried deep in the woods, with rich green foliage exposed from every window. This serene room will inspire all who sleep here to surrender and dream.
There is both a front and back porch furnished with comfortable patio chairs and tables to enjoy your morning coffee as the sun tops the forest trees around 9:30; or if you are an early riser you can walk down to the sprawling fields of wild flowers and tall meadow grasses one block from the driveway and watch the sun come up a few hours earlier.
'13 Moons' is abundant with ornamental and edible gardens everywhere you stroll over the two cultivated acres. The gate is always open to our a 90 X 90 foot vegetable garden filled with fruit trees, berry bushes, kitchen herbs, medicinals, and more. This garden is designed to walk on a spiral path, which leads you to a circular brick bench under a young, light pink Hydrangea tree. On the patio floor are red, black, yellow and white lines of mosaic tile to represent the four cardinal directions used for prayer and meditation in the Native American tradition.
Throughout all of the gardens are nooks and crannies designed for you to sit and rest for tranquility and reflection, inviting all who come to experience the rejuvenating power of Nature.
Less than 100 yards from the house is a spring fed pond built for swimming. The water is clean and refreshing and we recommend many dips a day. By the ponds edge is a bluestone patio perfect for enjoying the sun or reading in the late afternoon after the sun has dipped behind the trees.
'13 Moons' is surrounded by public land and you can venture off the property and walk for several miles in the woods before encountering any other houses or roads.
There are three buildings on the property. The primary house is our vacation rental, “La Casa del Corazon.” In the large studio barn we call “La Casa de Los Pajaros” (The House of the Birds) are living spaces and working artist studios. Much further from the house you will see a round building near the pond we call “La Casa de La Miel” (The House of Honey) which is a healing retreat space. The land here is spacious and varied, with gardens, meadows, and forest. The layout of the property has been carefully and attentively designed to provide an abundance of private space to be explored and enjoyed on your own.
At night you will be lulled to sleep by the songs of the pond frogs or the melodic calling back and forth of our various Owl residents; or possibly the gentle whisper of trees rustling with the breeze coming down from High Point Mountain, caressing all who come to bathe in the magical gifts of “ 13 Moons.”
We are located in a rural area, tucked between the Ashokan Reservoir and the base of the Catskill Mountains, 20 min. to either Woodstock or Stone Ridge, and 10 minutes to the supermarket in Boiceville.
We are close to the Peek-a-Moose Preserve which offers hiking trails and amazing swimming holes. Other hiking sites in the area are: Overlook Mountain, Wittenberg Mountain and Slide Mountain. All hiking maps are available in the living room library.
Woodstock, Stone Ridge, and High Falls have quite a bit to explore in terms of restaurants and shopping. There are farmer’s market and flea markets open every weekend in the summer and fall in Woodstock and High Falls. A 5 minute drive will land you at the opening of the 5 mile Reservoir walkway which takes you across pristine water with rolling mountain vistas.
We look forward to your visit.
The owner is a painter and professional gardener, who loves to travel in Central and South American and is influenced deeply by these artistically-rich cultures.
I booked this house because I was looking for a nice, quiet and private place to take my husband and 2 small children. I was surprised to see upon our arrival that the house is actually a two-family house, and we were sharing our "space" with tenants/groundkeepers(?) who lived in a separate apartment that was attached to the house. In fact, the tenants' portion of the house is front and center when pulling up and I was confused because there was no mention of the house being "shared" by others. The only barrier separating our living space from the tenants was a french door located in the kitchen with a white curtain on it and a small sign that said "private residence" . My 6 year old accidentally opened the door when exploring and I was mortified to see it was unlocked and she had wandered into someone else's living space. Also, I could at times hear the tenants conversations, and someone playing the violin, which made me feel uncomfortable. Also please note that the owner of the property lives on site as well in her own house which is fairly close to the rental, and I could also hear her conversations at times and was very aware of the tenants and other guests that roamed the property during our stay.
The house and property were both absolutely beautiful and do not disappoint. The photos do not depict how close the rental is to the owner's house and the description doesn't mention that you are NOT in fact renting a house, but part of a house. Because of this, and because my family bumped into others on the property (in the garden or on our way down to the pond), I did not feel that we had the privacy that I had assumed I would be getting, thus making this trip a bit stressful for me. I am a very private person and I specifically chose this rental because we needed privacy. That being said, the tenants were VERY nice and the owner was extremely helpful.
The gardens and grounds were absolutely stunning and very well maintained. The area is very quiet and serene. The swimming pond was great and my kids really enjoyed exploring the grounds... I just wish we had had true privacy and were not sharing our space with strangers. If I had known that there were going to be other people living on the grounds and/or using the grounds, I would not have booked this rental. Wish house was all ours!!!
In the interest of full disclosure, would respectfully ask that Lindsay update the description for this rental to reflect the apartment in the house.
My wife and I spent a beautiful weekend at the land of 13 moons. The house was immaculate and the property was absolutely magical. Lindsay ensured everything was ready for us and we could not have had a more peaceful and restful couple of days.
The Land of 13 Moons is just about the perfect place to go to get away from it all. A small group of friends and I stayed for a long weekend, and were greeted with an incredibly serene scene, replete with pond, large surrounding forests and fields, and an idyllic property nestled around the coziest of cabins. Wether you are looking for a place to escape with friends or family, this place is the place.
The house was incredibly clean, the kitchen has all the amenities (with one exception, no microwave, which is fine with me!) and very comfortable sleeping arrangements. The property is immaculately cared for, and there are small details everywhere to stumble upon for the whole weekend.
Lindsay is a very gracious host, and the property felt very private and peaceful for the duration of our stay. We can't wait to get back!
We stayed this past weekend to attend a wedding nearby. We were 4 adults plus a 2 1/2 yr old toddler and an infant. The place is very clean and we were very comfortable there. The common area downstairs is very spacious and the beds both upstairs and down were very comfortable. While we were very busy with the wedding and did not spend much time inside, we were able to walk around the beautiful grounds for an hour or two. Overall we recommend this property.
It's hard to express our delight upon arrival and our sadness upon leaving 13 Moons. We spent four amazing days here with our two young daughters, who loved it as much as we did. We swam in the pond, we climbed the treehouse, and we hiked in the woods. We grazed in the gardens, and hummed a chorus with the bees; we grilled pastured meats and dined outside under a beautifully lit pergola, then had good old-fashioned s'mores by the campfire.
The layout of the house was conducive to both adult privacy and family togetherness. The master suite is very comfortable, and the view from every window is just spectacular! Especially during late summer. Wow!
We took drives to Woodstock for groceries and to Peek-a-Moose Blue Hole for spectacular hiking and swimming. Lindsey, the property owner, was welcoming, helpful, and a great guide to the area--not to mention a master gardener who has created a magical atmosphere that can't be found anywhere else. Every detail, from curio cabinets with interesting artifacts, to surprising Zen statues nestled in the landscape, enchanted us and made us never want to leave.
This is a special place to be enjoyed by nature lovers.
The property is located far back from the road and is nestled between the Ashokan Reservoir and the base of the Catskill Mountains. The location inspires relaxation and outdoor recreation. The area is abundant with majestic swimming holes that only locals know about. The Ashokan Reservoir, an 8 minute drive away, offers stunning paved walkways that go on for 5 miles over pristine clear mountain-fringed lakes. Nearby Peek-a-moose Preserve has trails that hike several mountain peaks, such as High Point Mountain. Country roads offer easy walking and cycling. Our local Country Inn Pub boasts 500 varieties of beers and is 8 minutes from the property. House is surrounded by public and private land and you can walk for a half hour in the woods directly from the backyard.
