House 10 km north of Rome

  • 2 of 5

Convenient located just 15 minutes by train from center of Rome.

The neighbourhood is not really nice. Dirt all over and too many dogs barking.

The owner of the property stays in another house close by, in our opinion too close.

Owner's Response: We are sorry that you have not been satisfied with our home as it was for ALL of our guests who have stayed in these years. The house is advertised as "Dependance on the Tiber" the proximity to the main villa as well as being highlighted in the photos of the card, is physiological. This does not compromise in the most absolute way the privacy of guests who can enjoy common areas and others in exclusive use of over 800 square meters. The villa is in an isolated position in the countryside, 900 meters from Prima Porta district which is located in an archaeological area, one of the most important in Rome with the Villa di Livia ad gallinas albas, I secolo a.C, la Tomba delle Centocelle, il Sepolcro del periodo imperiale, laVilla romana del Cimitero Flaminio, ,del I secolo a.C.,Torre di Orlando del XIV secolo and much more that in only 2 days of stay you did’nt have the chance to visit, but to define the district "ugly" doesn’t seem fair. Finally, for our barking dogs we are still working on adjust them it but we are animals lovers and we like it so.

  • 5 of 5

FIRST DOOR Roman archaeological site (Villa di Lidia) Veio Park on the banks of the Tiber, boat trips, fishing, rowing close to the city and its historic center. The name Prima Porta dates back to the XIII century and precisely to 1225. It was therefore in the Middle Ages that the small village, built at the 13th km of the Via Flaminia on remains of ancient Roman buildings, took this name for the presence of the ruins of an arch near the church of Saints Urbano and Lorenzo, arch that could be the "first "entrance" to the City for those coming from the north [9].

In 1912, under the pontificate of Pius X, on the occasion of the sixteenth centenary of the victory of Constantine I on Maxentius in the battle of Saxa Rubra of 312 d. C., there was a plaque, with an inscription in Latin, on a rocky wall at the beginning of Via Tiberina, to seal the victory of Christianity over paganism.

VILLA DI LIVIA:

The villa has inside walls painted in the garden with a painting technique superior to that of many Pompeian paintings; most of the small scenes that adorned the painted walls are made with the so-called compendiaria technique, that is, summarizing. These frescoed gardens were meant to bring the spectators back to a serene and sunny landscape, rather than gloomy as the day presented itself. The villa is mentioned by Plinio [1], Suetonius [2] and Cassio Dione. In particular there is also a poetic legend about its foundation, according to which an eagle would have dropped a hen on the belly of Livia with a sprig of laurel in its beak. Advised by the haruspices, she raised the offspring of the bird and planted the twig, creating a wood, from which the emperors gathered the twigs to be held in their hands during the battles. Due to the legend the villa was also called ad gallinas albas. According to Pliny, the villa was located at the IX mile of the Via Flaminia.

The site's first excavations date back to 1863-1864, when the statue of Augustus of Prima Porta was discovered, today in the Vatican Museums and some underground rooms, such as the famous hypogeum with garden frescoes. In 1944 a bomb damaged the underground hall, also used by the military as a bivouac. After the war it was decided to disconnect the precious paintings (1951), which were transferred to the National Roman Museum where they are still today.

Only in 1973 the villa was expropriated to private owners, creating a public park, and in 1982 the restoration of the surviving structures began. Recently the frescoes, the main attraction of the site, have been reproduced in faithful panels placed on the original site.
