Harold And Claire
Claire is French-Canadian who grew up in Quebec. Harold grew up in Long Beach but had not resided in Long Beach for 50 years, retired from 35 year career in Public Safety from Utah. Purchased this cottage as a family vacation home for our six adult children and seven grand children to experience and enjoy the Mississippi Gulf Coast....they all now have a deep connection to the beauty and people of our beloved community.
Harold & Claire purchased this cottage in 2014
This could be classified as a “love story” by some or simply “luck of life” by others. In 2010 I, Harold, returned to the Mississippi Gulf Coast for a class reunion, where I hadn’t lived for over forty years. During that visit Claire feel in love with the beauty and peacefulness of the area and the people that call it home.
We had been looking for a location to purchase a winter/retirement home for several years. After we returned from our trip life went on and we continued looking for property in Florida and other parts of the South never thinking we would return to the Mississippi Gulf Coast
Then in 2013 events in life again brought us in contact with friends along the Coast. Later that year I was able to purchase a building lot in Long Beach with thoughts that we might build a small home there some day. In 2014 we again traveled to the area for Mardis Gras and took in a number of the parades along the coast. When checking the property I had purchased, Claire noticed that the older cottage on the property next door was for sale. The cottage had not been maintained for several years and was in need of much attention. Claire decided to purchase the cottage and the work was on to set it up for a family retreat.
After several months of work and help from many friends in the area Claire has brought the cottage alive. This will now be our families’ (kids and grandkids) retreat when time allows. We hope you enjoy the cottage, Long Beach, the area, the beach life, the great seafood and of course the people of the area as much as we do and will. Please feel at home at our cottage and enjoy the beauty of the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Cottage is in the heart of everything the coast has to offer. Walking distance to beach, restrurants, harbor, splash pad, town green (where all events take place), the quaint downtown but yet in one of the most sought after peaceful, relaxing and safe areas along the entire Gulf Coast. Cottage is situated on huge private lot with large Live Oaks, space to play and relax in establish beach neighborhood right on destinated bike route for biking. With the screened in porch is one of the few "old style" cottage still along the coast.
Very nice for a family getaway. Large kitchen, nice size bedrooms. Outside, the extras such as the cozy screened in porch, and the covered area with the picnic table, are perfect for unexpected rains. Well appointed and homey feel. I'd love to bring my grandkids here. Harold keeps you abreast of things to do, and places to go. Wonderful host!
We rented Harold and Claire's cottage for five days over Christmas 2016 - it was perfect. It is quiet, close to the beach, large enough for our family of four and well provisioned. Harold was a delight to deal with as he answered our questions thoroughly and quickly. He takes extra special care of his guests and ensures all is as it should be before, during and after our stay.
We tried out Brackish Restaurant (about a 5-10 minute walk away) which is on concrete stilts on the waterfront and enjoyed a fantastic seafood meal there. Food was excellent as was the service.
We would highly recommend their cottage to families, couples or anyone looking for a lovely quiet getaway!
Thanks so much Harold for making our stay a memorable one!
My husband and I came to Long Beach to visit family for Thanksgiving along with our 3 month old, 2 year old and 3 year old. The house was perfect for our family! There was plenty of room for our kids to play, inside and out. The beds were VERY comfortable and the decor was perfect for a beach home. There were plenty of towels for us to use as well as separate towels for the beach. As a mom, I appreciated having a large washer and dryer in the house so I don't have loads of laundry to do once we got home! Harold and Claire were wonderful to work with and very accommodating! We are already planning our next visit. Whether you have small children or are planning a girls trip, this is a great place to stay!
Once again we had a great stay! This was our 5th stay in less than 2 yrs! We love this cottage and the "like home" atmosphere that we feel every time we stay. We always look forward to our time down on the Coast. If anyone is thinking of a trip to the Gulf Coast of Mississippi, this is the way to go. It's comfortable, affordable, clean and the neighborhood is quiet and very welcoming. No more noisy Hotels/Motels for us! The local restaurants are great and there are so many choices! Our favorites are: Darwell's, & Steve's Marina, we love the food and atmosphere of both!
The Gulf Palms Cottage never disappoints, and Harold and Claire are the best ever! Thank you both again for a great experience and being so kind and accommodating to us for all our stays at the cottage...we will be back ASAP!!!
The cottage was very clean and conveniently located, the owner was available when we locked ourselves out to help us back in. we also found our newest favorite place to eat, Lil' Rays, just a few blocks away. It's a good little place for a short getaway.
I would like to comment how pleased I was with your “Gulf Palms Cottage” listing. Our stay from September 8 – 21 was fantastic. All throughout the cottage every room was attractive with the soothing colors and décor setting reflecting the name “Gulf Palms Cottage”. Every aspect offered a calming and welcoming quality. I immediately felt the assurance of a well maintained and clean property. One walk through the cottage and a sense of home and family took over the mood. Our arrival was at night in the dark and I immediately noticed and appreciated the motion activated lighting around the property which offered a definite sense of security. The next morning as I sat on the screened-in front porch having a cup of coffee I took in the landscaping and a view of the beautiful palm tree in the front yard; the plants and flowers all carefully planted around the yard with lighting to assent their beauty; a covered patio area containing a large outdoor grill, picnic table, nice reclining chairs all just outside the side door of the cottage. These features all immediately visible and then to boot the well thought out extras to accommodate tenants also included an attached shed to the covered patio area which contained a full size refrigerator (in addition to the one in the cottage kitchen), additional lawn chairs, table umbrella, even water bogie boards (which I did not use…lol but my grandchildren would have loved them for the beach). Back into the home which provided everything one would need from beach towels, all bedding, dishes, utensils, appliances (toaster, coffee pot, and microwave) and a complete laundry room with washer and dryer. This cottage is definitely a home away from home with all accommodations one needs for a wonderful vacation experience.
The owners of the cottage not only provided a wholesome, beautiful cottage surroundings but they provided every detail to cover any unexpected needs i.e. information and contact numbers for caretaker, TV and internet service, access codes for the services, exterminator if required, days for garbage pickup, savers card for local grocery store, church location and service times, list of recommended eating establishments, and so on. My experience with the lodging facility and the wonderful owners (Harold & Claire) of “Gulf Palms Cottage” is one I will remember, definitely revisit, and recommend highly to family, friends, neighbors, and gladly offer public recommendations through VRBO rental websit
