Overview

About the property

A recently renovated farmhouse in a rural location 30 minutes from the sea

Our property is a recently renovated farmhouse that is steeped in history. At various times over the centuries it’s been used as a cannon forge, a cognac distillery, grain store and servants’ quarters for the nearby chateau.

The layout incorporates two double bedrooms and a large downstairs kitchen-diner/living room that features an original Charentaise fireplace, complete with log-burner. The house sleeps four to six and includes all mod cons, see notes. There is also a private walled courtyard, ideal for sunbathing in the day or for relaxing BBQs in the evening.

Great rural location, set amongst the farms, vineyards, sunflower fields and wild forest of the Charente Maritime. The village of Corme Royal is a short walk (1km) and has a baker, butcher, hotel with a restaurant and a lovely bar that opens out onto the main square. There’s also a pharmacy, tobacconist, general store and post office. The French national footpath route GR14 passes within 100 metres of our house so our residence also suits ramblers and walking enthusiasts. The town of Saintes is on the pilgrimage route of Saint Jacques de Campostelle and pilgrims have passed through our village after staying the night nearby.

The coast, which can be reached in 30 minutes, offers everything from great surf to gentle sandy beaches and picturesque coastal walks.

The nearest large town, Saintes (15km), is a lively medieval market town with a river running right through the centre. It was the regional Roman capital in the first century BC, and boasts a number of historic attractions and ancient architecture, including a cathedral, amphitheatre and thermal baths.

This region often enjoys excellent weather, clocking up an average of 2,400 hours of sunshine every year. Great for short breaks or longer stays. Please get in touch if you have any further questions.

About Richard and Linda HENKES

We love where we live and have taken early retirement to fully enjoy the benefits of the area and its people. We brought our horses with us from England.

The above photo shows us at our son's reception in the grounds of our property in 2015. We don't always look like that!

Richard and Linda HENKES purchased this house in 2000

Why Richard and Linda HENKES chose World

The house is situated in a small rural hamlet a short distance from the main village centre. We bought the house for our own holidays and indeed our younger son held his wedding reception here in the grounds of our house.

It has the advantages of being both tranquil yet close enough to other attractions so that it suits most tastes.

What makes this house unique

We even have a small cognac and pineau distillery not 200 metres from the house. Visits may be arranged.

The visitor is able to walk in our woods or stroll the country lanes that surround our house.

PRICES FROZEN FOR 2019!!!!!!

Lovely accommodation, in a relaxed setting, with friendly helpful owners

  • 5 of 5

The Old Distillery was even better than described: recently refurbished, had everything we needed, and a peaceful courtyard for meals.

The owners couldn't be more helpful, took good care of us (without getting in the way) and gave some good tips for exploring the local area.

The Old Distillery is along a peaceful road, near open fields and forest. There are plenty of lovely beaches within easy range, an interesting chateau and the Roman amphitheatre and market in Saintes is well worth a visit.

Perfect spring break in the Old Distillery.

  • 5 of 5

If you want comfort, peace and location, don't look any further than the Old Distillery. It gives all this and so much more. Set in the Charente area of France, the Old Distillery is a lovely recently renovated old farmhouse. It offers every comfort and convenience with a very private courtyard. A brilliant base for exploring and discovering the Charente area. Handy to the coast, also the very interesting towns of Saintes and La Rochelle are an easy drive away. Corme Royal is the local village in walking distance, with a Xll century church and it has a bakers, butchers, chemist and restaurant/bar. The owners of the Old Distillery, Linda and Dick Henkes are welcoming and helpful. Their knowledge of the area is very informative and useful. The Old Distillery is well worth a visit.

What a wonderful stay!

  • 5 of 5

We received a lovely warm welcome from the owners on our arrival. The gite is really lovely and has been renovated really well. It has everything you can need. It really is charming. The location is amazing. You are nestled in rural France but can walk to a great restaurant in the pretty village square; along with a great bakers and other shops. We had great fun exploring the coast and Saintes is a great town. All in all a fantastic stay!

Richard eta Linda oso atseginak dira, beti laguntzeko prest,... y hemos pasado unos días fenomenales. Alojamiento y comarca plenamente recomendables. Muy buena relación calidad-precio. Gracias.
