Isolated in beautiful irish coutryside
The house is as described : it is very isolated and the view is magnificent. A winter garden allow you to watch outside even if it's raining, it is brilliant !
The house has got whats necessary to cook and even if tools are a bit outpassed, it is still possible to do anything you would need to.
Bedrooms are nice. We were 3 and I think it would be of some confort up to 4.
Instructions received before arrival tell you everything you need to know. It is sometimes a bit tricky to get things working (mainly with electricity), but the instructions are great.
This house has got definitely a soul !
It is quite convenient (Ballyskelligs 5-6 min, Caherciveen 15 min, Waterville 20 min) with a car.
We would love to come back !
Thank you for describing the house so accurately for future guests -- and I'm glad the instructions were helpful. What a beautiful way to put it -- the "house has a soul." -- I love it!
Spectacular stay in a quiet country setting
Loved our stay. Wonderful views of the valley. We even got to "assist" moving the cows from one field to the next. Couldnt have asked for a better Irish experience while on our vacation.
We are always glad to hear that our guests enjoy the house as much as we do. Come again!
Rustic hideaway in a remote and beautiful corner of Kerry
If you want to escape from it all in a remote spot surrounded by unspoiled beauty, and would like a taste of authentic old Irish rustic country living, then look no further; if you're looking for a luxury condo with all the modern gizmos, then you're looking for a different kind of holiday (and probably a different part of Ireland!) This historic cottage has thick stone walls, thin wooden interior ones, and has been enhanced by a spacious modern sun-room which boasts breathtaking views; the rest of the cottage is functional, rustic, with lots of character, and a remarkable amount of appliances and furniture for such a small space. Seven of us managed just fine (parents plus 5 kids aged 12 to 4) for three nights.
As a base camp for forays into Kerry it suits well, but you'll want to leave early for longer forays to the Dingle Peninsula, etc; it's only minutes from the Ring of Kerry and even less from the Skellig Ring. Lots of suggestions of places to go are supplied by the owners. As other reviewers have mentioned, it is well worth the 20 minute hike to the top of the hill where there is a beautiful view of St Finian's bay and the famous Skellig rocks. It is also located on a dark sky preserve, so if you get a cloudless night, the stars are amazing. The housekeeper was most helpful (once we located her house!) and there was an ample supply of peat turf and supplies for the fireplace provided, as well as some nice touches (lots of extra bedding, basic supplies like eta and coffee, fishing nets for rock-pooling, a body board and even a wet suit were to be found).
No Wifi, but that's a good thing, in my book. Nevertheless, we were surprised to have a flawless 3G signal our whole trip (why you'd want to bring your smart phone with you to a place like Kerry and still call it a holiday is beyond me anyway. Except maybe for the GPS...)
Good shopping available in Caherciveen about 10-15 minutes away. Be aware that food prices down here tend to be a lot higher than in less remote parts of the country, so we recommend bringing plenty of supplies with you if you're on a tight budget.
Thoroughly enjoyed it, and would go back in a heartbeat.
Thank you so much for such a thorough review. This is a different kind of place and its wonderful to know that others appreciate it the way we do.
Quaint authentically Irish
We absolutely loved this home, the view was beyond spectacular. It was definitely an true Irish home. Very small to US standards (I LOVED IT) I am already planning a trip back ! (Very small roads, and a bit of a drive from BIG cities but that's exactly what we wanted and were not disappointed)
We are so glad you enjoyed yourselves, there is something wonderful about experiencing different ways of living. Come back anytime!
Convenient and beautiful location
Our family of six spent three nights at the home. When we arrived, it was foggy and rainy with no view. So when we woke up the next morning and saw the gorgeous pasture views we were doubly impressed. We climbed the hill behind the house, which is definitely a must for the view. We drove around the Skellig Ring and Ring of Kerry and visited Killareny National Park. There is so much to do around the home. The property is just secluded enough to make you feel like you are escaping the tour bus crowds, but the location is extremely convenient to anything you could want. Bring earplugs if you sleep in the room with the water tank and it's fine. The kids loved watching the sheep and thinking up names for them. The weather even cleared up enough for us to see the Skelligs.
So glad you had a good time. The weather can be unpredictable, but when it clears -- it's wonderful!

About Daphne and Peter Wolf
We are New Jersey natives with Irish, Scottish and English roots. Peter is a freelance writer and photographer and Daphne is writing her dissertation for a PhD in Irish History at Drew University in Madison, NJ. We have two grown children, Patrick and Casey.
Daphne and Peter Wolf purchased this House in 2001
Why Daphne and Peter Wolf chose Ballinskelligs
We first saw this house in 1998 on a visit to Ireland and were overwhelmed by the spectacular view. It belonged to a cousin of Peter's mother and when he passed away we purchased it and renovated it with lots of help from other cousins living nearby.
What makes this House unique
Along with one of the best golf courses in Ireland, Waterville Links, we enjoy the beach in Ballinskelligs, hikes around the countryside and the quiet, peaceful beauty on all sides.
