About Carl and Poy Hallinan

We used to live in the greater Washington DC area, and really enjoyed our mountain home and the surrounding areas. We recently moved down to Florida to be closer to the family but we are fortunate to have a great friend who helps taking care of our property so we are able to share this wonderful property with our quests. We hope you will enjoy staying at our mountain retreat as much as we did.

Carl and Poy Hallinan purchased this cabin in 2005

Why Carl and Poy Hallinan chose Shenandoah Valley

We spent so many weekends in Shenandoah National Park that we decided to buy a home there. Now that we have a family, we don't get up there as often. We decided it should not go to waste, and that we should share it with others.

What makes this cabin unique

We never tired of the views--we have hundreds of sunset photos, the fall colors are brilliant, and the snowscapes are magical!

Guestbook comments from the owner

I just wanted to thank you for letting us use your amazing cabin last week. We have spent most of our vacations camping in a pop-up camper, which is fun but a bit crowded for four adults. Due to my recent surgery, we decided to try to find a less stressful way to spend our vacation this summer. I'm afraid you may have spoiled my family and they'll expect this kind of luxury in the future!

I don't know who did the photography on your web sites, but it is amazing. I had narrowed down my search to three possibilities, but chose yours on the basis of your pictures, not only for the amazing views but for the thoroughness of being able to see every room--I like to see what I'm getting into and when the other web sites didn't show us the bedrooms or the bath rooms, I was drawn to your place.

Of course no pictures could do justice to the amazing beauty of your location. To rise every morning to those ever changing mountain views, to watch the clouds flowing over the hills, to expect a different sunset every night, and to be able to walk out and watch the clear starry skies at night, was truly a special treat. You feel like you are the only people on that mountainside, yet you have every possible luxury available.

And of course you have given so much attention to stocking your place with every imaginable thing someone might want to enjoy their stay, games, entertainment and books. I especially enjoyed the bird and star guides (I've never seen so many humming birds in one place). I think we got to enjoy almost everything, from the hot tub to the pool table to the barbeque.

I want to give a special mention to Rich. He was so helpful to us, ready to fetch fresh supplies, fill us in on local color, and even bringing us fresh baked zucchini bread. He is a great asset to the whole experience.

So thanks again. I understand this is the first year you have been renting. We hope it is not the last. I don't know if our plans will bring us your way again, although with a daughter living in DC that just might happen, but if they do, we certainly would love to spend another week in your amazing lodge.

Rustic Cabin with Everything You Want and Need

  • 5 of 5

I organized a fall retreat for my women's discussion club. We had a wonderful stay at the cabin thanks to the hospitality provided by the owners Carl and Poy, and the property's caretaker, Rich.

--On-sight fire pit with firewood for purchase from Rich.

--The beautiful view from the deck and the hot tub on a sunny clear fall day.

--Close proximity to Shenandoah Park. We hiked into the park from the cabin. And it took us 3-3.5 hours total to get to Lewis Falls and back.

--They have a large supply of kitchen materials (pots, pans, plenty of plates and glasses).

--Rich's hospitality! He and a friend were so kind. He helped us light our bonfire AND pulled one of my friend's car up a muddy hill when it got stuck.

I highly recommend this cabin. We might return again next year.

Quiet, Great Views, Comfy Cabin

  • 5 of 5

The views from the deck were amazing and the lot was private and quiet. We had planned to do a lot of cooking in to save money on the vacation and the kitchen was stacked with plenty of cookware/dishes and there was a Food Lion grocery store about 5-10 minutes away. The caretaker of the property was very responsive. There was a list of items you could purchase from him: firewood, fresh eggs and homemade jams. It was mentioned somewhere that the driveway is easy to miss... and miss it we did. The driveway is on the right after you turn onto the stone road... if you pass the sign that shows a map of the subdivision, you've gone too far. Skyline drive was about 20-30 minutes away and we got a car pass for the week for less than $20 I believe. We ended up doing a lot of hiking on trails off of skyline drive, rode some horses at Jordan Hollow Stables (literally 5 minutes down the street) and just sat out on the deck. There was plenty of movies, games (including ping pong on the lower level), music and books in the cabin if you just wanted to stay inside. We really enjoyed it!

What a wonderful time we had!

  • 5 of 5

Our family stayed in the cabin for two weeks this summer and it will definitely be one of the most memorable vacations we've ever had. The house is beautifully located and we loved spending our mornings and our evenings on the back porch watching the sunset/sunrise. It's an easy hike up to Skyline Drive, even with two 7-year olds. The days we didn't spend hiking we went to visit the caverns, went horseback riding, splashed in the Stanley Pool, or visited one of the local wineries or flea markets. Even lazy days around the house are fun as the girls were able to play on the swing/slide set or we all played ping pong in the basement. It was very easy communicating with the owners and Rich, the handyman, stopped by regularly to see if we're okay. We can only recommend his fresh eggs and the yummy squash relish he makes himself! All in all, a fantastic vacation and a great place to stay. Would definitely recommend to any of my friends.

Great place to stay with a great view!!

  • 4 of 5

Great place to stay for vacation with your family. The kids loved being outside on the swing set, campfire, and hot tub. The game room is awesome and there is even a small trail for the kids to have an adventure on. I loved waking up every morning and drinking my coffee enjoying the view of the mountains on the deck. The inside is very nice with plenty of room, a spacious kitchen, and a fireplace. The house is close to the Walmart, so it wasn't a hassle to stop for groceries. It is also not far from Skyline Drive, so that is also a plus. We also appreciated Rich, who is a knowledgable neighbor who gave us some insight on the property and it's surroundings. He also has fresh eggs, apple butter, and jellies that taste like nothing that you buy from the store. We had a great time here and really enjoyed ourselves and hope to return next year!!
